A diary for socially-aware hostesses, containing written entries and photographs reflecting the hectic life and unfulfilled social aspirations of Hyacinth of the BBC1 series, "Keeping Up Appearances". It is possible to use the book as a diary, but its primary function is to amuse.
20 years ago Hyacinth Bucket kept a diary. In it she plans her social events she attends or is hosting. Including in this diary is her day to day musings. From times spent out in the country at their residence at Marsden Hall and the days spent in town at "The Avenue" we get a glimpse into Hyacinth's world.
As Hyacinth talks about her neighbours Elizabeth and Emmet, the seldom calls of precious Sheridan, her sisters, Onslow and her husband Richard who seems to be spending a lot of odd hours away from the Bucket home.
I laughed when she went to Royal Ascot and when she didn't recieve the Royal Garden party invite.
If you love Keeping Up Apperances or looking forward to the prequel of "Young Hyacinth" then this little book is for you.
If you've ever watched Keeping Up Appearances and loved watching all of Hyacinth Bucket's antics, you'll love reading her diary. This diary takes place after the ending of the show, so it's all new stuff. It's hilarious reading, and you are constantly smiling as you read of her trying to get into the Royal Enclosure at Ascot, buying a painting she thought was done by the Prince of Wales but was really a nude of her sister Rose, and her impressions of her neighbors and acquaintances. Great fun!
Also re-read in honour of the late Patricia Routledge. Sometimes drags on (and a few spelling mistakes here and there) but definitely captures Hyacinth Bucket (err, Bouquet) to a T. If you like Keeping Up Appearances you will like this book!
Although I love this book it is more a novelty read than something that you can sit down and really get into. It is set up like a date book with to-do lists and the like. I admit that I am obsessed with the show so this was an awesome add to my collection.
