In Zephaniah 3:17, God is described as One who rejoices over us with singing. Too often, however, we fail to hear the music. This is a book about listening for the song of God’s beautiful kingdom and attuning our lives to the melody of Christ’s marvellous love. In Tuning In, Jeanie Hoover invites you to develop the habit of hearing and helping others hear God’s voice amid the noise and clamor of our world today. You will revisit God’s creative acts in the beginning to understand why listening is so important, you will explore the features that characterize the act of deep listening, and you will have tools you can use to become a better listener. Discover the joy of listening to God even as you listen to others. Discover the grace of tuning in to the voice of the Spirit.
It is always a delight to read a book when you know the author personally, and this book is no exception. I loved getting to know Jeanie more through the pages of her book, as well as the wisdom she shared about truly listening to others. She talks about listening in a way that is inviting, practical, and holy.
Wow! This book is a back to basics on why we love others and how to do it better. “Being heard is so close to being loved that for the average person, they are almost indistinguishable.” If this isn’t motivation to read this book, I don’t know what is. Not only does this resonate deeply within my soul, but also in my experience of when I do listen to others the best I can. And the more I realize this is true, the more I want to do it-and better! This book and taking spiritual direction classes has transformed how I do relationships. It’s realizing there’s a better, more beautiful way to meet others… one step closer to shalom.
This was a great book that would clearly be useful for both training and reminding spiritual directors of some of the best tools for being present to others with a listening and discerning ear. But i love how Jeanie opens this up for all who want to learn how to listen with one ear toward another and one ear toward God. Listening well isn't something restricted to therapists and directors, it should be the mark of all those who want to be present to others in a Christlike way. Jeanie offers some excellent examples of how to break out of our cultural patterns of fixing and instead listen deeply with an ever deepening trust in God.
Jeanie writes here what she lives out. Through story and deep insight into what true, intentional listening looks like and feels like, she offers us a glimpse into the invisible and yet present kingdom of God and how we can be on the lookout for this in our own lives and conversations. When applied, this changes us...changes me. This books is for anyone who wants to go deeper.
