In book 2 of the Salinas Valley Saga, Marianne Hanlon has her whole life in front of her. Like most girls her age, Marianne dreams of romance and marriage, but she also longs to taste what it's like to be out on her own. But one night, a brutal assault shatters Marianne's innocence and threatens her belief that her dreams can ever come true.
I read this book as a teen and then lost it and couldn’t find it for years. Thanks to Chat GPT i did find it again. It’s not nearly as good as my teenage self thought it was. It’s a bit hurried. Warning there’s a lot of violence/sexual assault against women mentioned. The book does a good job of mentioning women can be victims which isn’t how things were looked at in that day and age.
The book is fast paced and painful at times. Grant cycles through about 8 1/2 years rather quickly. There’s a lot of historical terms used that if you don’t know history you might be a bit lost. I’m glad I found the book but overall it’s dramatic and sad.
3.5 A good read by Jean Grant involving choices: those that we make and those that are made for us by others in their choices. In its wake, the process begins of coming to terms with the past so we can embrace the present. Doing God's will is the central theme throughout the book. In order to do His will, we must not only forgive others but ourselves.
The second book of the Salinas Valley Saga, the writing gets better and the story gets more and more interesting keeping you wondering how things will turn out for the main character, Marianne. She learns to be patient with the Lord and He blesses her mightily. I liked it soo much that I am looking for #3.
I have read this book many times I got it as a teenager and it has been inspirational to me over the years. I just came across it and decided to read yet agai now I'm on a mission to find the other three books in the series.
