Rather than denying the results of historical research or dismissing its practitioners as wrongly motivated, he suggests that the source of the perceived discrepancy may lie not with the Bible but with the way in which it has been read. He also calls into question whether the genre of the Bible’s historical books has been properly understood.

About the author

Steven L. McKenzie is Professor of Hebrew Bible/Old Testament at Rhodes College. He holds a B.A. (summa cum laude) and an M.Div. from Abilene Christian University and the Th.D. from Harvard University. His research and teaching interests include: the history of ancient Israel, the literature of the Hebrew Bible, the Hebrew language, the Dead Sea Scrolls, methods of biblical interpretation, and archaeology. He is a past president of the board of governors of the Institute of Egyptian Art and Archaeology at the University of Memphis. He is also a co-leader of the Middle East Travel Seminar, which tours Syria, Jordan, the Sinai, Israel, and Greece each Spring.

Steven L. McKenzie bietet mit diesem Buch einen guten Überblick über die historischen Bücher des Alten Testaments aus Sicht der historisch-kritischen Methodik. Dabei folgt er überwiegend der gängigen Linie, insbesondere im Blick auf das deuteronomistische Geschichtswerk sowie die Anwendung von Quellen- und Formkritik.

Inhaltlich zeigt sich deutlich, wie stark narrative Texte in ihrer ursprünglichen Aussagekraft relativiert oder umgedeutet werden – biblische Berichte werden oft zu literarischen „Tales“ reduziert. Gerade dieser Ansatz macht das Buch für Leser interessant, die sich kritisch mit den Voraussetzungen und Grenzen historisch-kritischer Bibelauslegung auseinandersetzen wollen.

Für bibeltheologisch orientierte Leser bietet das Buch insofern einen gewissen Mehrwert, als es exemplarisch zeigt, wie problematisch und spekulativ manche Schlussfolgerungen innerhalb dieser Methodik ausfallen. Wer allerdings eine glaubensnahe, exegetisch und theologisch ausgewogene Einführung in die Geschichtsbücher sucht, wird hier nicht fündig.

Trotzdem: Als Einblick in die Denkwelt und Argumentationsmuster der historisch-kritischen Forschung gut geeignet – besonders, wenn man bereit ist, auch kritisch mitzudenken und manchmal auch herzhaft zu lachen.
