Joss Brevyn is the last heir in a long line of executioners. Although a woman, the same rules still apply: kill the condemned within three tries, or be tortured and killed. Joss has yet to miss her mark, and even though she spends her free time as a healer, the town views her only as a deathsman. So when she and her assistant, Henrik, stumble upon a beaten man on the way home, both are hesitant to reveal who they really are. The only problem is, so is he.

Aric Kayden has seen better days. After failing to assassinate his last victim, he's left bleeding on the side of the road until he's found and taken in by Joss and Henrik, two seemingly innocent locals. Healing from his wounds, Aric is still haunted by the target he didn't kill, especially by those who paid him. Despite the undeniable attraction between him and Joss, Aric can't bring himself to tell the truth: that the masked figures who hired him knows where he is, and his original target is the mysterious prisoner who was recently sentenced to death. Forced to uphold the deal, Aric's only job now is to make sure the execution goes as planned and eliminate whoever intervenes.

Bound by their duties, both Joss and Aric assume this next kill will be easy. But then one of them has a change of heart, sparking a chain reaction that could leave one—or both—of them dead.

———my thoughts———

Joss Brevyn is the last heir in a long line of executioners. Although a woman, the same rules apply to her as to all others: kill the condemned within three tries, or be tortured and killed.
Spending her free time as a healer, Joss and her assistant Henrik discover a beaten man lying on the road.
Aric has seen better days—when he failed to assassinate his last victim, he was left bleeding on the side of the road.
Until Joss found him.
Bound by both their duties, they assume that the next kill will be easy. But when one of them has a change of heart, a chain reaction sparks that could leave one—or both—of them dead...

The world building is so well researched.
You can see that the author obviously spent a long time building this medieval universe—all axes and blood and hope—but we did end up with a mini info dump on each page.
And I found that a little boring, because as the book progressed, nothing was happening.
Perhaps it’s just because it was so short (barely 200 pages) that when I finished it, I immediately thought “that’s it??” Not because I was so immersed and didn’t want to leave, but because it felt like a prologue in a longer book.
But I tend to enjoy longer books so perhaps that’s on me.
In this case though, I really feel like it would have benefited from being longer.
I didn’t have enough time to connect to the characters, the ending felt too rushed, and the pacing was off.
It went from a very slow pace with not much happening, to action action action in the last few chapters.
And it was so abrupt—and a little predictable.
The characters and their interactions felt very flat and one dimensional most of the time—another thing I think would have improved if the book was longer.
I liked Joss, loved Henrik, and disliked Aric...so how much I cared really just depended on which of the characters was at the forefront
And while this book is marketing as a ‘fantasy romance’, there was no chemistry, nothing that made me care about them.
All the Dark Souls took me much longer to read than normal, but I can’t really blame that on the book (I keep reading too many books at once)
All in all, I really wish it had been longer because I feel like I would have enjoyed it more if it had been.

————quotes————

“There had been so many others before, but this one...this one felt like home, the solace of finally being where he was meant to be.”

“Because in the end, Joss wasn’t the monster.
He was.”

———random extra thoughts———

...I’m really glad this was in the ‘read now’ shelf...because I would have been more disappointed if it wasn’t.

Thanks for reading!❤️

Thank you to the publisher for gifting me this ebook!

I liked All The Dark Souls when I first started reading, but I encountered some issues early on. For one, her being an executioner is portrayed in a weird way. She’s from a long line of executioners and it’s their familial punishment. However, she also uses it as, like… a feminism thing? Like, “people don’t believe I can hack prisoners’ heads off but I can! I’m really strong!”

In a scene where a man is chosen for the job over her, she takes offense.
”That was the hard part about being a woman executioner, knowing that no matter how much she trained herself, she’d never be looked on as equal to her comrades in strength.”

She even decides to go to the beheading because she “just want[s] to see how he does it.” Considering this is her family’s centuries long punishment, I don’t know why she takes such offense to not having to do it. Like, girl, this should be a blessing!

While most of the writing was fine, there were some weird juvenile lines strewn about. For instance, when she was cutting wood, she remarked that it was “a reminder of what she was being forced to do as the log split, a metaphor for someone losing their head.” Wow, a metaphor you say? Never would have gotten that.

I wouldn’t call it a bad book. There were just some annoying lines and scenes throughout that took away from my overall enjoyment.

Joss is an executioner, Aric is a hired assassin. Finding Aric beaten within an inch of his life on the side of the road, Joss brings him to her home and nurses him back to health. A friendship and budding romance begins to develop, but then things go ary that put them professionally in each other's crosshairs.

I am so thankful this is part one of a trilogy because it left me on the edge of my seat wanting more of the story. I am fully invested in what happens to Joss and Aric.

I felt the character development was great but could have used a little bit more conversation between them. A lot was unspoken as the characters seem to be caught up in their internal monologues. What is shared about Joss's tragic backstory was insightful character building. Aric's past is shrouded in mystery.

I liked how the points of view alternated between Aric and Joss revealing what they are thinking about one another.

If you're a fan of dark fantasy, suspense, and a pinch of romance add 'All The Dark Souls' to your TBR. I'm anxiously looking forward to books 2 & 3 of this trilogy.

3.4 ⭐

This book was hard to rate but I believe 3 stars is a good qualification. I enjoyed the read. The writing was great, and I quite liked how descriptive it was, it made it easy to envision the scenes in my head.

I liked the premise of this story. A woman executioner? That's not something you find often. Besides, you can see that the author made a lot of research because the historical details are on point. I found it fascinating to read about such a complex character. Someone who kills and tortures in the name of the law but it's seen as a monster by the citizens. I want to read more about Joss, I didn't get enough of her past and her family's history.

The rest of the plot was not something new in this genre. A "lost" heir, schemes, and politics, a kingdom tangled in war, a villain working in the shadows, etc.

The book was too short for my taste. I don't mind slow-paced stories but this one had almost no action until the last few chapters. I was just getting interested in the story when I noticed there were only a couple of pages left...I guess the author was building the atmosphere, presenting the main characters and a basic rundown of what's coming next. That's okay but I would have preferred a longer novel (maybe combining the first two volumes?). The end's not abrupt but it leaves too many loose ends and there was not enough information to make any deductions.

All the Dark Souls, a beautifully dark story with strong characters

All the Dark Souls by A.M. Dunnewin is an enthralling dive into a world where darkness and beauty intermingle seamlessly. As the first installment of the trilogy of the same name, it sets the stage with a countryside setting that is both hauntingly dark and breathtakingly beautiful.

All the Dark Souls

All the Dark Souls ♦ A.M. Dunnewin | A Review

Opinion
From the outset, it’s evident that Dunnewin has crafted characters that are not only lovable but also deeply nuanced. Each character is given the space to develop at their own pace, weaving seamlessly into the intricate plot. Joss, the focal point as the town’s executioner, is a particularly compelling protagonist. Her journey is a blend of duty, sacrifice, and ultimately redemption.

The hidden, slow burn romance between Joss and Aric adds a layer of complexity and emotion to an already gripping narrative. Their dynamic, coupled with Joss‚ enigmatic past and her role as executioner, creates a tension that keeps readers eagerly turning pages. Henrik, the shy yet kind companion to Joss, adds another dimension to the group dynamic, serving as more of a brother figure than a mere friend.

What truly sets All the Dark Souls apart is its exploration of courage and sacrifice. Joss‚ decision to spare a stranger from the gallows sets off a chain reaction that puts not only her life, but the lives of those she cares about, in jeopardy. An already complex narrative is further complicated by the fact of that stranger who claims to be the lost Prince Royal Callan.

Dunnewin’s prose is rich and evocative, painting vivid images of the countryside setting and the characters who inhabit it. The pacing is expertly crafted, balancing moments of quiet introspection with heart-pounding action sequences. As the first installment of a trilogy, All the Dark Souls lays a solid foundation for what promises to be an epic and unforgettable journey.

Conclusion
In conclusion, All the Dark Souls is a captivating read that seamlessly blends dark themes with moments of unexpected beauty. With its lovable characters, intricate plot, and gripping but latent romance, it’s a book that will linger in the minds of readers long after the final page is turned. A.M. Dunnewin has crafted a truly remarkable tale, that I went straight to the next volume.

"Hate is so much easier. But Kindness? That takes courage."

I absolutely loved the idea of the book. Joss is an executor. She comes from a long line of executors. There is no escaping this life, if she can't kill after her third attempt, she is killed. Aric is an assassin, who after failing to kill his latest target, was left for dead. That was until Joss discovered him.

I had mixed feelings with this book, in the beginning I was reading quickly and getting into the story. But by midway, I found the pacing to be off and a struggle, but this could have just been me. Everything picked up again around 80% when more was happening and there was more action involved. I think the story would work better as a longer story rather than a trilogy 'All the dark souls' felt more like a prologue, the opening chapters to the world that could be more.

Also for me personally, I would like the chapters to have names of who's point of view we were reading from or when it changes meet way to gave the characters name there. Most of the time I knew who's perspective I was reading from but a couple of times I didn't realise it switched.

I did enjoy the amount of research that went into medieval executions as these were some of my favourite scenes of the book. Saying all this I still can't wait to read more to see what happens to Joss and Aric.

"He ran when it was easy. You stayed when it was hard. That says a lot about the both of you."

A.M. Dunnewin's All the Dark Souls is just that, dark & deadly. When an assassin is found on the roadside beaten and left for dead, enter Joss, the town executioner. She & Henrick take him to their home to help treat his wounds and get him back on his feet.

When Joss is slated for a special execution she is surprised to learn who the prisoner is and what the stakes are for him to die.

I loved that Joss was a strong female lead-a woman executioner--yes please I'll take more of that. The relationship between Aric and Joss is one of close proximity and I was rooting for them as I was flying through the pages. This ends on a cliffhanger and I will definitely be reading what comes next!

This was a spur of the moment pick from netgalley and I’m glad it was a “read now” because it was worth it!

The book is told from multiple point-of-views and they come from Joss Brevyn and Aric Kayden. Their job titles and the way they go about doing it may be different, but the end result is the same. Reading about Joss was very interesting. Her life has been hard from family difficulties to the job she must do. There is no way out from being an executioner. This is her job and if she doesn’t want to do it then her only option is to marry one and the tradition of passing down the job remains the same. I don’t know how she does it. She is a very strong woman when others in her family couldn’t be. She also balances out the death with being a healer and maybe her family picked that up to help feel better about what their main focus is.

The way Joss and Aric meet is by pure chance, although for him it was lucky that he did since he needed a healer haha. I liked their small interactions together and felt the little spark between them. Their romance is very, very mild and is really only talked about and not a whole lot actually happens. I do like a slow-burn so it didn’t bother me. I am sure we will get more from them in the sequel (which I have already preordered!). Although I think we will get a lot of banter because things haven’t gone according to plan.

A lot of the characters, besides the main two, are very minor. The only one who isn’t is Henrik who happens to be Joss’s assistant. Not a lot is known about him and we get more bits and pieces as the book progresses. I do very much like him and if something happens to him I will be very sad. He is so loyal to her family.

The plot is well paced and there are quite a few plot twists keep you reading on. It’s also on the shorter side so I finished it in one day! I usually tend to have problems with shorter ones but I feel like I got a lot of information and I wasn’t wanting for more. It’s not as dark as I thought it would be, but it does have to deal with executions and sometimes they don’t go as planned.

Overall, this was a great fantasy! I am very much looking forward to the sequel.

Thank you to the publisher and netgalley for a complimentary earc to review! All opinions are my own.

I read this in one sitting and I wasn't expecting to love it this much. It's a different kind of FMC from what I usually read, and I liked seeing more into the reality of executioners at the time. They were chosen and had to comply with the duty that was given to them, setting them apart from the rest of society. The fact that it was a woman added even more stigma around her. I really liked Joss, and Aric is still so mysterious, that I really feel like I need more answers and will need to find book 2 ASAP. I recommend it for anyone wanting to know more about the historical role of an executioner and looking for hidden identities, very slow burn and action.

This was EXCELLENT, I highly enjoyed and would recommend. I can’t wait to read the next one.

A slight criticism is that the dialogue was sometimes a liiiittle clunky and it seems a little pointless to split it into a trilogy, as each book ends up being closer to novella length, BUT I suppose that this form allows each book to reach a crescendo and then be followed by an epilogue taking place apart from the main narrative. Shout out to NetGalley for this one xoxo

real rating: 3.5 stars out of 5

i have mixed feelings about this book; and i'm not sure whether i liked it or not. this book wasn't what i expected, so i am a little disappointed -- i'll say that.

starting off with the storyline, i thought it was boring. it had the potential to be good, but i found things to be very repetitive very fast -- and i got bored quickly. it became the same thing everyday, with not much change. like i said, the whole storyline itself had potential to be really good, but i don't really feel like the author did much to advance it. as for the timeframe, it was fine. i'm not a major fan of historical fiction books... but this was fine. i did enjoy the bits of the old times, especially with the executions. i did find the executions interesting, and they made the boring storyline break up a little bit; which was a nice change.

as for the characters, they were basic. i thought Joss was fine, but nothing special about her. i wouldn't go as far as saying she was a "super strong female lead", but she had her moments. i do like that she had a lot of depth to her, although i wish we didn't find out so early on. a little mystery about her would've been nice. as for Aric, he was an ass. man only cared about himself and i feel like that was so obvious. i also don't think he had true feelings about Joss, it was more sexual tension (we'll get into their relationship in a minute). as for the side characters, they were fine. Hendrick was a nice addition, although i definitely think the author is setting it up for him to also have feelings for Joss. and, that's about all the side characters we actually have LOL this book could definitely use another character or two.

onto Joss and Aric's relationship, it was weird? they barely knew each other, yet acted in love. what's that about? like Aric didn't even know Joss's middle name, yet he's "obsessed" with her. if i'm being honest, i think mans was just sex deprived and needed his fix. as for Joss, i just think she clung onto whatever attention she got since she was deprived of that. overall, their relationship is set for failure -- i'm sorry LOL i don't see them lasting. and as for Aric pushing Joss off the cliff (literally... sorry for the spoiler), that was such a douche move and i hope Joss beheads him for that.

this next paragraph will contain light spoilers so read at your own discretion. let's discussing the ending, it was blah. it was predictable and because of that, it wasn't exciting. like, we all knew Joss would do some fucked up shit and end up ruining her life -- that was inevitable. and the whole scene where Joss and Aric kiss and he says some shit like, "wait for me", cringe. they barely knew each other, and then he goes to kill her. yeah... real dream man.

overall, this book has potential to be better. i'm curious to see where the trilogy goes, and i hope Aric dies in the process

Meinung:

Vielen Dank an den Verlag für das Rezensionsexemplar!

She found him lying on the side of the road, bruised and bleeding but not entirely unconscious.

"But always remember that this does not define you. I may die a thief, but I was a soldier. You may die at the town executioner, but what are you really?"

"Hate is so much easier. But kindness? That takes courage."

Blurb: Joss Brevyn is the last heir in a long line of executioners. Although a woman, the same rules still apply: kill the condemned within three tries, or be tortured and killed. Joss has yet to miss her mark, and even though she spends her free time as a healer, the town views her only as a deathsman. My thoughts: An Assassin and a woman executioner? ummmm sign me up! This book was awesome and I read it in one setting because I couldn't put it down! This book will definately stay in my brain for awhile because it's such a different type of story which captivated my attention and sucked me in! I really liked this one and I think you should read it!!

A strong 3.5 stars

Thank you, Netgalley and A. M. Dunnewin for the ARC!

"They made you what you are, but always remember that this does not define you."

The story jumps right in at Joss and Henrik finding Aric, an assassin, badly beaten and half dead. They take him to their cottage, where Henrik tends to his wounds while Joss heads into town to do her job as the executioner. Aric is in and out of consciousness, but he's relieved when he wakes up and sees that Jocelyn is back. A tentative friendship forms along with a slow burning romance, but then they're put in each other crosshairs when Jocelyn makes a decision that changes their lives.

The writing is done very well, I could envision the landscape and the character interactions in vivid detail. I was entertained by the dialogue and the relationships that were forming.

One thing that I think could have improved the reading experience would be to stick to one POV during a chapter instead of it being omniscient. In chapter eight it starts in Arics POV, but we also get information on Jocelyn. For example:

"Do you remember what happened? Who did this to you?" Jocelyn asked, thinking it was a good time as any to know what caused his downfall.
Arics guard automatically rose, wanting to keep her from knowing what he was. "I made a bad bet," he answered vaguely. That was half-true; not assassinating your subject and being caught by the ones paying for the death was an extremely bad bet.

I don't read a lot of stories with omniscient narrating, so it took me a while to get used to it, which also took me out of the story a little bit.

The pacing is a little slow and then picks up at the end. This book is only 200 pages and again, when it starts to pick it up in ends on a cliffhanger. I wish this book would have been longer so I could have had time to really connect with the characters and have their relationships really develop. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the book, and I'm really looking forward to reading the next one!

This is book 1 in All the Dark Souls Trilogy and what a great start! It’s a really different cast of characters. Our FMC is Joss (Jocelyn) Brevyn whom is the towns executioner. Although it is not the life she wants for herself she tries to combat all the killing by being a healer and by taking care of individuals who have been hurt badly. Joss is immediately lovable, everything about her personality screams amazing human and you can’t help but want the world for her. Along comes our MMC Aric Kayden, who Joss finds battered and beaten on the side of the road. She rescues him and brings him back to good health. What she doesn’t know is that he’s actually an assassin.
Executioner and Assassin…..these two are made for each other. I love their easy interactions, you can feel the energy between the two. I think Joss is in for a wild and crazy ride now that Aric has entered her routine existence.
Although this book was a bit shorter I was engrossed from the first page. The concept of a female executioner and how she copes with this lot in life makes for a really intriguing read. Her balance of the negative with her healing and growing is quite remarkable…she’s remarkable!
There is definitely a great adventure at play here and I can not wait for the next instalments so we can get this adventure rolling. I look forward to our side characters having more of a role in the next reads and unraveling the mystery of who Aric is to assassinate and why Joss risks everything for a stranger!

Thanks to the author and publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Well I really enjoyed the premise of this with a female executioner as our main protagonist. Joss has inherited the position and indeed is both torturer and executioner so clearly not a role usually associated with the so called fairer sex. I liked that to offset her more gruesome duties she has compassion and a genuine desire to do her very best.
Yes this story was interesting but somehow felt short and occasionally lacking something. I wasn’t particularly sure how masked men kept suddenly appearing with dire warnings although clearly they are part of the political machinations as there’s a missing heir . Plus it definitely felt more medieval/fantasy yet in spite of horses for transport and a general feel of old worldliness bizarrely electricity was mentioned ! I will admit as it got near the end that’s where the author decided to give answers and action. I am a bit flummoxed how to rate this because I did enjoy it in spite of it appearing that any infringement provoked hanging or be heading ! I hope that there is a sequel because I did enjoy reading about Joss although I honestly didn’t particularly warm to the supporting characters and wonder if Aric is intended as a romantic interest further down the line ? This held my attention without a doubt but sadly didn’t quite leave me satisfied.
This voluntary take is of a copy I requested from Netgalley and my thoughts and comments are honest and I believe fair

This book was a surprise on my bingo card! I was really excited to dive into it and I was not disappointed. Going into this as a fan of SJM and JLA, it was no surprise that I gravitated towards this book based on its plot and characters. It is a YA book, so remembering that it reads like a YA book was super helpful when I started reading it.

The female main character was strong, powerful, and so cool that you can't help but root for her, even as the executioner. And out male main character was a great addition that really made the whole close proximity trope work perfectly for this book and its plot!

This is a book series that I'll be watching out for because I truly couldn't get enough of it just from book one alone! Cannot wait to see where A.M takes this series! I look forward to reading more!!

Thank you NetGalley for providing me with an eARC in exchange for an honest review.

An advance reading copy of this book was provided by the publisher Dark hour press, via NetGalley, in return for my honest review.

I have been in a bit of a reading slump recently, but for me this book has it all, historical type fiction, action, fantasy and a budding romance. It certainly reignited my love for reading, with a well paced, gripping storyline, likeable characters and a strong female lead, I was hooked.

She is the town executioner and local pariah, he is an assassin for hire, hunted by masked men in the shadows, both have received orders to execute the same man, or die themselves. What could possibly go wrong?

Joss is from a long line of town executioners, handed down as an unwanted birthright, despite her gender. A job just as dangerous to her as it is the prisoners she meets. An executioner is given three attempts to complete their task, or be tortured and killed themselves. A law Joss is all too familiar with.
Using her profound knowledge of the human anatomy, Joss spends her free time as a skilled healer, tending to the sick and injured.
After failing to carry out his latest assassination, Aric is badly beaten and left for dead, knowing those masked strangers will be back, if he doesn't finish the job.
Finding him at the side of the road, Joss and her assistant Henrik, take Aric home and tend to him. As his wounds heal, a tender romance blossoms.
The day of the execution arrives as does an unexpected twist, the prisoner has been pardoned, but orders are still to be carried out. Joss' next move could prove fatal for everyone.

I honestly could not put this one down and ended up staying awake all night, just to finish. I was gripped, I have already bought book two and can't wait for book three in November, just in time for my birthday. I definitely recommend reading if you enjoy YA/Fantasy novels.

I finished this book a few days ago and honest I’m still not sure if I can find the words to describe how great this book is.

Firstly I’d like to thank katieandbreypa and the author for giving me a digital copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This book is really great. It follows the story of Joss and Aric. Two persons whose paths intertwined in a unique time. They couldn’t be more similar and yet more different. Each person could be the only one to ever get the other…. But their fate won’t make it easy. Joss is an executioner, Aric an assassin. She’s been fighting all her life to be free of this job she is forced to have. He is running away from his last job, the one he couldn’t finish.
The characters are incredibly well written! Both have unique backstories and motivations. I loved to read through their eyes. I honestly can’t say which narration was more enjoyable. The world building is also great. The laws and society of the tale are easy to understand. The plot is fun, easy to follow and addictive. I especially loved how gender roles were challenged by Joss and how Aric admired her for it. This book is a great read and I can’t wait for book two!

A strong 3 ⭐️

Rating: 3/5 ⭐️

All The Dark Souls was such a fun read for a few reasons, the main one being the PLOT.

Things I LIKED:

1. PLOT PLOT PLOT. Okay, not my usual genre, but let me just tell you I was in the edge of my seat. I could see this being a movie. I could see this being a tv series. I loved it and I could visualize the entire story so dang well.

2. The world building. I understand this is a companion series, but there was so much content and context I didn’t feel like I was missing anything in the world the author built.

Things I DIDNT like:

1. Aric. Idk man, he just didn’t sit right with me. The 3⭐️ rating does come down to how much I just didn’t like this main character.

Thank you to Katie and Brey PA and the author for a review copy of this book. All views posted are my own.

Joss is an executioner and her and Henrich find Eric beating and almost dead on side the road and against Hendricks plees Jas pick some up she is a healer and who better to take care of this poor beaten man but her what just doesn’t know is he is an assassin the longer she takes care of him she starts having feelings for him and although they have their moments nothing happens the book ends in a cliffhanger which was fine with me because I would be down to read Buy the author I love historical fiction in love when I find an author that not only grasp the era but as talented as this author seems to be. This is the first in the trilogy and OMG I can’t wait for the next. I received this book from NetGalley and the publisher but I am leaving this review voluntarily please forgive any mistakes as I am blind and dictate my review.

This story was unique and refreshing. Joss is a female executioner who also acts as a healer. I enjoyed this but something was missing. The tension between Joss and Aric was so well done and a forbidden Love story. I liked Aric's growth and Henrik was such a heartwarming character. The plot was good too but it didnt have that wow factor for me. I wanted more from it. This felt very much like a prequel rather than a first book in a series. The epilogue made this seem like there will be more POVs and royal scheming to come. Overall, this was a decent read and I'll be continuing the series.

literally terrible…lmao. i did not realize this was YA or else i would not have read it. i have definitely aged out of that genre and it is glaringly obvious.

the story was completely underdeveloped. the “romance” was terrible. one day he’s unconscious, the next they have “crushes” on each other… like okay???

it’s strange because it included the literal chopping of heads in great detail but the writing itself felt like it was for 4th graders at best. so, what age range is this book even aiming for because it makes zero sense at all…

boring, awful writing, terrible execution, yawn-worthy “romance.” i hated it. don’t waste your time.

I can’t believe this is the first part of a trilogy! I need more! I devoured this book and was on the edge of my seat while reading! I’m invested in what happens to Joss and Aric.

There was some character development in this book and I’m hoping as the series progresses there will be more character development and we’ll get to see these characters in a different light. I love dual POV books and I loved reading the story from both their perspectives.

This dark fantasy, romantic suspense series has me hooked and I can’t wait for the other two books in the series!

I am very thankful to have been given an eARC copy from NetGalley and my review will be 100% honest

I DNF’d at 57%. I was really waiting for the plot to start, but the first 57% of the book is literally the span of maybe 4 or 5 days?? Nothing happens, just dialogue between the characters and the hint of a plot eventually. I shouldn't have to read more then half of a book just for there to be zero plot.

Also, the insta-love that Aric has for Joss is so weird and annoying (but I’ve been unlucky with reading 3 books back to back with insta-love so it’s bothering me a lot more then usual). He talks about loving court life and hating the country, and literally 2 days later after speaking to Joss only twice, thinks that he would loooove to live in the country all of the sudden. When she doesn’t tell him about her job, he gets upset, saying “Would you have ever told me who you really were?” like dude who do you think you are to feel so entitled to this woman's life? To ask if she's dating the morning after you meet her, then try to get her life story from her assistant, THEN get all pitiful that she didn’t tell you the truth? Also the way he states he was relieved that her father was dead? Maybe I just read that wrong, but how can you be flirting with her and just non-stop thinking of her, but be relieved that her father is dead.

The only redeeming quality this book had was the historical accuracy of an executioner's life.

I really enjoyed this book, I like how it started quite gently, letting you learn about the characters and their backgrounds, then the mystery started building and then that ending!!! I can't wait for book 2 to see what happens next.
Character wise, I really like Joss and how she deals with balancing her duty as an executioner with what I think is her calling as a healer. I can't wait to see what happens with her and Aric whether they are destined to be enemies or if they will come back together. I also loved the introduction to Callan and can't wait to see how his story develops

This was a really enjoyable, quick read! From the first page you feel like you're a part of the story, which had me completely captivated. Joss was such an intriguing character, very likeable despite her job as an executioner. The dual pov of Joss and Aric kept the pacing steady. I liked the alternating reveals of what they were each thinking, though I do wish there would've been more dialogue and maybe a little banter between them.

I can't wait to find out what happens next after that cliffhanger! I'm looking forward to heading back into this world. 🪓

Action packed tale featuring a strong woman executioner? Yes please. While the story doesn’t really get rolling until halfway-ish, I was hooked on chapter one.

Characters leap off the page, the entire premise and background knowledge is so incredibly interesting, and twists and turns throughout. This is a stellar intro to the trilogy and I’m excited to see where the story takes us next.
