In a move that shocks nineteenth-century Philadelphia society, wealthy widow Laina Brighton turns her grand house into an orphanage for homeless children. Staid and stuffy teas quickly give way to peals of happy laughter echoing through the stately halls. With the support of handsome doctor Thaddeous Allen, Laina is determined to give these waifs a better life, despite the malicious gossip that surrounds them. As these two crusaders, bound by honor and courage, create a future for the forgotten, they change the course of their own futures in ways they never imagined. Along the way, they make a felicitous that sometimes people become a family in their hearts.
Married to her own personal hero for over fifty-eight years, mother of three, grandmother of four, and great-grandmother to a beautiful baby girl, Dorothy calls on her life’s experiences—including designing and helping her husband build their home, complete with beams they hewed by hand and a real, old-fashioned walk-in kitchen fireplace she occasionally cooks in, to add color and depth to her stories. But, while she still knows how to clean used bricks, mix mortar and swing a mean hammer, she now only designs homes for the characters in her books. An antique lover, she fills those homes (and her own) with furnishings appropriate to the time.
When she is not busy writing, Dorothy enjoys visiting with family—who live much too far away—and traveling with her husband throughout the United States doing research for future books. She values her American heritage and believes in God, love, family and happy endings, which explains why she feels so at home writing Christian historical romance.
Quite touching and beautiful. It took forever for them to actually meet though!!!!!! It is literally a quarter of the way into the book before they meet! 296 pages divided by 4 equals 74 and they meet on page 75! I was so upset that they hadn't met yet that I almost skipped ahead. Anyway, it is a wonderful book and I highly recommend it!
I was so happy for Laina and Thad! Just a beautiful love story that also shows the power of love and prayer - the struggle of figuring out and following God's plan in your life - and what can come when you finally surrender.
it was a good story of falling in love and turning back to God. I enjoyed it. had a little trouble starting off because of the dialect but once I got into it it all came together. good read.
2.5 stars. Really needed to read the first book in the series. Sweet spiritual historical about a woman who starts an orphanage and falls in love with a Dr.
