Amy Stewart Fraser was born in Ballater in 1892 and brought up in the manse at Glengairn. She was educated at Esdaile College, Edinburgh, and at Dunfermline College of Hygiene and Physical Training. She devoted herself to voluntary public service and was awarded the WVS Long Service Medal. In her later life she lived in Carlisle, returning to Glengairn for part of each year, and it is there that her books The Hills of Home and In Memory Long are set.
I really enjoyed this feast of 20th century social history ranging from (and not exclusively)her early life in A Manse in Gairnside in the north east of Scotland to school in Edinburgh and married life in Carlisle. Amy Stewart Fraser fills the pages with interesting observations and stories. A great follow up to The Hills of Home which is about the author’s upbringing in Gairnside. Both delightful reads.
