Blame It On The Blackout

Rate this book
In the pitch blackness, trapped between floors,Peter Reynolds had almost convinced himself that the woman in the suddenly too cramped-for-comfort elevator car was not off-limits...and that the desperate passion they shared would not change everything.

But then the lights came on, and Peter knew that he’d crossed more than one line. For Lucy Grainger was his secretary...and now, quite possibly, pregnant. If Peter were any other man, Lucy would make the perfect wife and mother to his children. But he was not the marrying kind for reasons Lucy could never understand. Yet, if that were true, why was he secretly hoping that the stick turned blue?

USA Today bestselling author Heidi Betts is the daughter of an Arabian sheik and a Las Vegas showgirl, as well as the heiress to the Chocolate is Better Than Sex Candy Company fortune. Because of this, she eats chocolate in all its many delicious forms for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and in-between snacks . . . without ever gaining an ounce on her perfect five-foot-nine, size zero figure.

Each and every one of her breathtaking, award-winning novels has been adapted to film and gone on to become a phenomenal box office smash, featuring such mega-stars as Hugh Jackman and Sandra Bullock, Tom Cruise and Julia Roberts, and Harrison Ford and Charlize Theron.

Heidi readily admits that she is only able to write such passionate love stories because of her real-life happily-ever-after romance with superstar actor Dwayne Johnson, who makes every day a fairy tale. When she’s not writing or making hot, toe-curling love with her “Rock” of a husband, Heidi can often be found riding naked on horseback (a la Lady Godiva) along the beaches of Malibu or hobnobbing with the rich and famous on Martha’s Vineyard.

If you’d like to experience your own perfect, idyllic life just like Heidi Betts, be sure to take the little purple pill. (Not the red one. Never the red one.)

Una historia común, pero tan bien desarrollada que no he logrado dejarla antes de llegar al fin, aunque creo que eso ha sido porque no es muy larga. A destacar el conflicto de Peter después del viaje a Nueva York, ha sido muy bien presentado al lector.

3 1/2 Stars! ~
Lucy Grainger has been in love with her boss, Peter Reynolds since she started working for him two years ago. At first she did everything to draw his attention to her feminine wiles, but Peter never seemed to notice. Peter knows that Lucy is not a fling sort of girl, and Peter just doesn’t do relationships. He doesn’t have the right genes to make a happy family life, at least not while he’s trying to establish his software company. But fighting his attraction to Lucy is becoming harder and harder to do, until the night he asks Lucy to accompany him to an awards gala where’s he’s the recipient. It’s a posh affair, so Peter splurges by giving Lucy his credit card to get all dolled up. Around midnight they sneak out of the gala only to get stuck in the elevator when the power goes out. And now the cat is out of the bag, Peter’s firm control of his claustrophobia is weakening and fast. Lucy tries just about everything she knows to try to calm Peter, but he’s quickly losing it. That is until Lucy reaches up and kisses him, and Peter is lost. Only Peter still isn’t a relationship kind of guy, can they go back to their business only relationship?

Peter is one of those hunky geeks that women gravitate to. But when it comes to Lucy Peter’s constantly opening his mouth and inserting his foot! He’s just so adorable! I loved the vulnerability his claustrophobia gave him and how terrified he becomes that Lucy is going to leave him when he explains why he can't do relationships. Lucy is a lovely heroine though not much of the go-getter that I would have liked her to be; that is until the end of the book. The elevator scene takes place in the third chapter, and then the book sort of lags where I found myself easily distracted. Though by the seventh chapter things heat up again very nicely and the balance of the book gripped me and I was eager to see how Ms. Betts brought them together. This is a read well balanced with emotional moments and fun lighter hearted ones. I really liked the secondary character Ethan, and I understand he has his own book. I’ll have to see if I can find a copy, as I’d love to see him wrapped up in knots by the right woman!

Peter's a dedicated computer programmer who has been harboring an attraction for his secretary Lucy. She harbors the attraction right back, but their professionalism has always gotten in the way. That and Peter's solid belief that because his father was a rotten family man, so will he be. But, in a moment of claustrophobic panic in a darkened elevator, Peter ends up having sex with Lucy. Then the awkwardness sets in. Peter still wants Lucy in his bed, but doesn't want to hurt her by failing to be a good relationship guy, while Lucy knows this about him but she has to fight her baser urges and let her cool head, which tells her that Peter will not settle down, prevail.

This starts out great, with a friends-to-lovers sort of theme and a super hot sex scene in the elevator. Even the aftermath was pretty riveting as the two try to pick up the pieces of the sexual explosion and piece their working relationship and friendship back together. But then, both of them get pretty damn immature, as soon Lucy realizes that Peter isn't going to be in a long-term relationship. She starts flirting with his friend, telling herself that he's not interested so she should start looking for someone else (despite her having realized that she's in love with him). I might have been okay with that if she'd realized that she was subconsciously trying to make him jealous or something - but consciously thinking it's time to get over him only hours after he's put the brakes on, is pretty cold-hearted. Then, after they have sex again, she actually skips town while Peter's out buying more condoms (he's literally gone for 5 minutes and she disappears). Peter says, "Fine! I didn't want to have sex with her anyway!" and stomps away like a toddler. Which isn't too far an exaggeration actually. It takes a third-person to get them to put their big-kid pants on and face each other. The resolution was satisfying at least, and the epilogue was sweet.

“I know I said it couldn’t be done, but I’m willing to give it a shot. And even if I fail, even if Reyware goes under and we end up living in a cardboard box down by the river, I’d rather be in that cardboard box with you than in the most lavish mansion in the world without you.”

It's your typical boss and administrative assistant romance. Each other attractive, but they don't want to take that step and ruin the friendship and that professional relationship.
I like both the characters, and their friend who was a major player but was instrumental in the getting together in the end.
The book is quite shallow and the "above which I have put as A spoiler explains the whole book in a very concise manner.
However I would recommend it is a fun book to read for light reading.

A simple story about a girl lusting after her gorgeous boss. And the boss being the man that he is, was oblivious to the fact. Up until the night they got stuck together in an elevator and did the dirty deed. Good thing they were the only ones in the elevator that time..
Very fast paced and very funny at times too. I hope there will be Ethan's story next..

This story was hot, yet sweet enough for me.

Peter and Lucy have always been attracted to each other, but always thought the other wasn't interested. When the lights go out on an elevator ride, the truth is revealed.

I always enjoy friends-to-lovers romances, and this was a good one.
