Devine & Friends #3

Guarding a Notorious Lady

Rate this book
A woman of pristine breeding, Lady Rosalind Devine is also an unrepentant meddler and snoop—which is why her brother refuses to leave her to her own devices while on his wedding trip. But Rosalind will not make things easy for any unseen, unwanted "nursemaid"—and vows to use her considerable wiles to expose her mystery guardian.

Nicholas Kincaid, the Marquess of Winterbourne, agreed to secretly guard his friend's spoiled, stubborn sister, though her infuriating penchant for mischief is causing him to question his decision. Though bound by the rules of society—and friendship—Rosalind's spirit and sensuality have sparked a fierce desire in Nicholas to play a very different role in her life, one that entails passion, ecstasy...and unavoidable scandal.

Endowed with an insatiable yearning for happily-ever-afters, Olivia fell in love with the promise of happy endings found in the lovely pages of romance novels. When she's not reading or writing, she's quite the busy "governess" to a trio of lovely children.

She, sincerely, appreciates all of her emails as they often bring sunlight to some cloudy days. You can try to reach her via her Facebook page--though I should warn you, she's a bit of a recluse and Facebook continuously confuses (intimidates) her.

Presently, she's writing, working, and bargaining with a large yellow dog that trades cuddles for peanut butter

3 stars – Historical/Regency Romance

Rosalind has been infatuated with her older brother’s best friend, Nicholas, since she was a girl, and she’s spent the past few seasons playing matchmaker for others and dodging unwanted suitors left and right, convinced that no other man could ever possibly capture her heart. Nicholas’s unexpected appearance for the London season brings a flutter of excitement, and she hopes to finally gain his attention. And when she finds out the real reason for his sudden interest in her, Rosalind becomes more determined than ever to win his affection.

Nicholas vows to watch over Rosalind and protect her from the interest and advances of her numerous suitors for her brother while he’s away on his honeymoon trip. After all, the spunky, stubborn, meddlesome, matchmaking, troublemaking lass is his best friend’s younger sister and therefore off-limits. Too bad he’s having such a hard time remembering that and resisting the temptation she presents. The more time Nicholas spends with Rosalind playing the role of guardian, the harder it becomes to deny their intense attraction and for him to hide his feelings. Can Rosalind finally capture his heart the way he’s always held hers?

This is a cute, entertaining read, and although there’s nothing new or exceptional about it, Guarding a Notorious Lady is an enjoyable way to spend a few hours. 3 stars.

3.00 stars Historical Romance!

He was in love with her and he hid it well! She was in love with him and she hid it well! Yet alas in the process of dancing around each other the H/h finally admitted their unrequited feelings for each other! Dear readers, does the story sound familiar to anyone?

I admit it is a sweet and sexy Historical Romance with a blend of hilarity, but it is very much forgettable.

Lady Rosalind is a pristine noble and one of the most eligible women in society. Various fortune hunting men started waging in winning her hand when her brother who is a duke decides to take a wedding trip. Hence enter Nicholas Kincaid, the Marquess of Winterbourne in the form of her guardian. Rosalind is absolutely besotted with him for years who returns the feelings but hides it to make things interesting for us. However, Nicolas’s unvarying denial to Rosalind and hence sometimes intentionally hurting her feelings was a bit frustrating in some places of the book. The love scenes were moderate and didn’t help me build up the much wanted sexual tension among the H/h. They detained each other from heading towards each other due to unconvinced excuses and predicaments.

The heroine practically does nothing but to stop short and fall, trip, stumble and stagger in the hero’s lap, arms, foot and what not. She’s always entertaining accidents from the beginning to the end of the book. And the hero catches her obviously and due to moments of accidental touches in the process of rescuing her from her clumsiness, peels himself off his resolve of not falling in love with her due to his ‘tortured past’ (really now, why all heroes have to be tortured in whichever lame way available when there is no real reason for him to be called a tortured hero is beyond me…sigh). That’s it. That’s the story is all about.

I don’t know whether I had over expectation after reading the brilliant previous two books of the series, this book certainly didn’t ring my bell for me. I had to write this book’s review as soon as I finished it because I feared I might forget what was in the book. Don’t get me wrong I am a huge fan of the series and hence the author but I would say it wasn’t a good one of Miss Parker’s. Nevertheless, will certainly wait for her next one!

Rosalind Devine has been in love with the boy next door for 7 years. The boy next door, Nicholas Kincaid, has had boners for the girl next door for 7 years. Now he's a marquis and on guard for Rosalind. The only obstacles to love are lack of physical contact and approximately 15 chapters.

1. While this was more...coherent, in my opinion, than the second book, it still did not come together in a way that made me excited. One solid conversation would have taken this book out at the knees. Rosalind is in love with Nicholas, who thinks she is too good for him and is also afraid of love. Instead of, y'know, talking about it, they fondle each other in private and glare in public. Very adult stuff, here.

2. THAT 'KIDNAPPING' PLOT WAS A JOKE. He barely made it out of the driveway before it was foiled. I mean, REALLY??

3. That's how much of this book could be classified, actually: everything is half-starts and easily foiled. Nothing sticks, nothing moves the plot forward. The plot points that at one point were there to keep them apart fall away the moment they should be addressed. There's no weight to anything, no consequence. Nicholas, who watched his father pine himself into an early grave for his departed wife, does not ever address his change in feeling before proposing to Rosalind. Rosalind, who is half convinced that Nicholas seduced her out of some cold want while his affection lays elsewhere, doesn't event ask the question before accepting Nicholas's proposal.

This proposal, btw, which happens in the last 5% of the book. No round up, no epilogue. Just flat "will you do me the honor?", "Sure", THE END. ROLL CREDITS. TAKE YOUR POPCORN AND GET OUT.

4. The more I reflect on the lack of development in this book, the more annoyed I get.

Similar to the two books before it “Guarding a Notorious Lady” was just as sweet. This time around it’s Lady Rosalind Devine’s turn.

She has been in love with her brother’s best friend, Nicholas, for years, but he doesn’t seem to notice or even like her. Until her brother Gabriel asks Nicholas to be Rosalind’s guardian while he is away on his honeymoon.

Rosalind is not happy with the situation and makes life challenging for Nicholas, but oh so enjoyable for the reader!

I had great fun reading this series. It was a light easy read and I am saddened that these are the only books available by this author. Here’s hoping that she will publish something else soon.

There was a lot of tripping, accidentally falling on top of each other, etc.. And getting to the inn, and what do you know, only one room available... they will have to share A BED.

I don't mind a little bit of nonsense like that sprinkled in, but here the heroine definitely jumped the shark (and landed on the hero's lap. Accidentally).

I didn't find it particularly engaging - the romantic pace was off. The premise was that the hero promised the heroine's brother to guard the heroine, without revealing himself because there was a wager on the heroine's virtue. This asked for a LOT of suspension of disbelief from the reader, and made the said reader ask herself: "seriously, what is wrong with these people? What is their problem?

Please indulge me as a take a moment to gush over how much I loved this book. Guarding a Notorious Lady gave me everything I want in a Historical Romance. It was sweet and sexy. It had great characters. And fantastic sexual tension.

Lady Rosalind is one of the most eligible women in society. The local men have even started taking bets as to who will win her hand. So when her brother decides to go out-of-town with his new wife, he asks his old friend Nicolas to be her guardian. Of course, her brother doesn't realize Rosalind has loved Nicolas from afar for years. And the feeling is mutual. But Nicolas takes his promise to protect Rosalind very seriously. He fights his feelings for her. His resolve is strengthened by the fact that he fears falling in love. But, of course, guarding Rosalind forces Nicolas to be with her all the time. And the more time they spend together, the more cracks form in his armor.

The book isn't perfect. I did get a bit frustrated with Nicolas in the second half as he continuously rebuffed Rosalind, sometimes intentionally hurting her feelings. But I couldn't hold it against him too long. Especially since he wanted her so much; he cared for her so much. And every time the two of them touched each other, it was electric. The love scenes weren't overly smutty, but they were still hot. Even long before they sealed the deal, just their stolen kisses and touches managed to be exciting.

This is book three in a series. But I never felt like I was missing anything, even though I haven't read the other two... a situation I plan to remedy in short order. Loved it. 5 stars.

I loved this story! The characters were not obnoxious or annoying... but sweet and easy to connect with. I love the brother-best-friend stories and Olivia Parker did a great job with this one. So far, all of her 3 books have been great... new favorite author :)

Update: Reread 9 years later and I still loved it :) Which makes me happy, as I was afraid I might dislike my older Keepers as I reread them years later.

Very disappointing - no where near as good as the first two books in the series (both 5 stars for me). Had some funny moments and good banter between brothers (Gabriel & Tristan) and sister (Rosalind), but the story lacked between Rosalind and Nicholas. I could believe the attraction between them, but the reasons they weren't together were totally lame (on his part). They seemed to keep circling each other, he would be weak and act on his desires, then feel guilty and swear he would never touch her again - and she put up with this - for the ENTIRE book. That was the story - sorry, I wanted more and can't give the book anything more than 2 stars.

Really enjoyed this 3rd installement about the Devine Family. This book had all that I liked in an historical romance, the sexual tension was great right up to the consumation by the lake. One of my mostfavorite scenes ws when the hero breaks into the heroines's room prior to telling her to keep her door locked from him.

I reviewed this book for Romance Reader At Heart website.

RRAH's THOUGHTS AND PONDERINGS:

We met the heroine Lady Rosalind, a sister to Gabriel Devine, the Duke of Wolverest, in AT THE BRIDE HUNT BALL where I liked her well enough. But here, in GUARDING A NOTORIOUS LADY, I came to know who she is; what her dreams and desires are; and finally I get to know the love she feels very deeply for her brother's best friend.

We also met Nicholas Kincaid, Marquess of Winterbourne, in the same book and knew that his friendship with the Duke went way back to their school days. In this tale we find out the reasons behind Nicholas' preconceived notions of love, his deep yearning for Rosalind, and the reason behind his accepting the `assignment' of guarding his best friend's notorious sister.

GUARDING A NOTORIOUS LADY is the third book in Olivia Parker's series about the Devine siblings. If you haven't read the other two, please don't worry. This series could well be read as a standalone, but to get the better feel of it, and to understand the siblings, you'll be better off to read them in their order: Gabriel and Madelyn's story is in THE BRIDE HUNT BALL, and the second book is a romance between Madelyn's best friend Charlotte Greene and Adam Faramond, Earl of Rothbury. Tristan's, Rosalind, and Gabriel's younger brother is getting his own story shortly, and this one I'm eagerly awaiting.

I'm fairly sure that I'm not alone in praising this book, and for that matter, this whole series. GUARDING A NOTORIOUS LADY was a fast paced, well developed, and all around delightful historical romance. It is well written, with a plausible plot line and hero and heroine that are strong, interesting, fun and hot. Every love scene in this book sizzles and is so well done, that it leaves one with a feeling that we're intruding, and maybe we should slowly turn away and leave these lovers be...

If you're in a mood for a sensual `catch me if you dare' romance filled with witty banter between this duo, look no further than GUARDING A NOTORIOUS LADY.

First and foremost, I thought this book was too cute for words. I mean, I love the whole brother's best friend falls for the sister love stories and this was definitely one of them. Rosalind has had more marriage offers than she knows what to do with but she's refused every single one of them because she's in love with someone who doesn't know that she's alive....

...at least as far as she's concerned.

But Nicholas knows she's alive and really, each year Rosalind kills him a little more with how tempting she is to him. He can't go after her because she's his friend's sister and because he owes the Gabriel a favor, he agrees to watch over Rosalind while Gabriel goes on his honeymoon. Nicholas is a country boy at heart and going to the city isn't something he's looking forward to but when Rosalind and her meddling heart gets into trouble at every turn, it is Nicholas who comes to her rescue time and time again.

Watching the two of these guys come together in love was just so much fun. Parker did a wonderful job of drawing their romance out and I ate it all up. From Nicholas being continually exasperated with Rosalind and Rosalind being just as exasperated and confused with Nicholas, it all made for some entertaining reading time. I adored each and every single scene that these two were in because they literally lit up the pages.

This book was so much fun and I cannot wait to read more from this author. She is fast becoming one of my go to authors and she can't write books fast enough to please me. I enjoyed this book and definitely recommend it to anyone who is in the mood for a fabulous historical romance with a swoonworthy hero and a heroine that is too fun for words.

Grade: 4 out of 5

The third book in Olivia Parker's Devine & Friends series. Lady Rosalind Devine, sister of Gabriel (who we met in book 1), is in London for the season. Gabriel, her brother is leaving on his wedding trip and tells her she has a guardian to watch her while he is gone. Only he won't say who it is. Being a Duke's sister has its dangers and with Rosalind's ability to meddle and such, he feels the need to ask his friend, Nicholas Kincaid, the new Marquess of Winterborne, to secretly watch her. It is with much surprise that Rosalind sees her neighbor in London. Since he has gained a title, she believes he must be there to marry and beget an heir. Unknown to anyone, Rosalind is in love with Nicholas and it pains her to think he will marry another woman. But also a secret is the fact that Nicholas is in love with Rosalind. But as her guardian, he cannot betray the trust that his friend has bestowed on him.

Lots of witty banter in this fun, light-hearted romp. I really enjoyed it.

Sadly this was the weak link in the series. I LOVED the first 2 books of this series but this one fell a bit flat for me. The random drama at the end had me scratching my head and story was a bit forgettable. Does anyone know when or if this author is releasing more books?

Lady Rosalind Devine is a matchmaker. She's the first one to see how well the lively Madelyn would suit her brother, Gabriel, an upright and staid Duke. She also saw how the Earl of Rothbury was in love with Charlotte. She's 24 going on 25, and she's never been even remotely interested in any of her suitors. That's because she's already given away her heart. Nicholas Kincaid is the best friend of her older brother Gabriel. they've grown up together, but Nicholas has never given Rosalind even the slightest hint that he's interested, and Rosalind hasn't spoken a word to him in the fear that he'll reject her overtures. In fact Nicolas has always kept himself buried in the Yorkshire country side. So what's he doing in London now? And especially since Gabriel and his new bride have just left on an extended honeymoon trip? And who is this dreadful guardian Gabriel has arranged to watch over his sister?

I have thoroughly enjoyed Olivia Parker's previous books. I was also really looking forward to this book, because its always interesting to see a matchmaker fall in love herself. Rosalind and Nicholas are very likable characters. They're attracted to each other, but for their own reasons are unwilling to disclose their affections to one another. So they play cat and mouse with each other, all while Rosalind is trying to figure out who it is her brother has left to guard her. It can't be Nicholas since Gabriel told her it wasn't, can't he?

I liked how the story flowed. the intrigue that was thrown in with a suitor who was trying to win the wager regarding Rosalind's hand in marriage was well, but I didn't feel like it was thorough enough. Why was he so desperate to get Rosalind to marry him? And none of the exchanges between this suitor and Rosalind or Nicholas were shared. One scene I really enjoyed the book was where it is revealed what was really going on when Lady Rosalind brained the Earl of Rothbury with a heavy tome. That made me lough out loud. As did other moments through out the book. Olivia Parker has done a great job with this book and I look forward to seeing whose book is next. I wonder if it is Tristan's, and if it is, who is the woman for him?

The story of Rosalind Devine, amateur matchmaker in love with her older brother's best friend, Nicholas Kincaid.

Nicholas has been tasked with guarding his best friend's sister while he and his new wife are on their honeymoon, something that proves to be a full time job, and not only because of a bet among the bachelors of the ton on who will marry her.

Rosalind is less than happy to be followed around like a child, but can't deny that she likes having Nicholas around, determined to take this chance to get him to fall for her.

She doesn't realize that Nicholas is already in love with her and has been avoiding her because of that, unwilling to let himself become so attached to someone that their potential loss might cripple him like it did his father.

Fluffy and light, with a tone that felt more contemporary than historical. There is supposed to be a book coming out about Rosalind's younger brother Tristan, but no publication date has been announced yet.

How does the saying go?
‘While the cat’s away, the mice will play?’

A wager has been made
(in one of London’s gambling hells to
see who can win Lady Rosalind’s hand)

A Duke will go away
(on his wedding trip)

Hopeful suitors will wish to play
(at winning his sister Rosalind’s hand by fair or foul)

A protector will be named…
(to ensure his sister will come to no harm)

Rosalind has it all: brains, looks, pedigree, connections, and soon the one thing all rakes and fortune hunters desire the most - an absentee guardian.

Another delightful read by Ms. Parker. If you’re looking for a fun and lighthearted read, you may wish to pick this one up. I gave this one 4 out of 5 stars. Oh, and did I mention the hero in this one is Scottish? How remiss of me. *grin*

I am most definitely curious on what happens between Lady Rosalind and Nicholas. I've loved the former ever since At the bride hunt ball. Karma is so lovely. The matchmaker is the one finding her match. This'll be too fun to ever miss out <3

Since there is a first time for everything, this would be the first time I was completely not at all elated to continue reading an OP book. What they said about having high expectations and end up with disappointment is not entirely the case. It rather ended up with ~diverting instead. Nicholas and Rosalind's story hasn't been appealing at all.

The third book in the series looks closely at Rosalind Devine.

Rosalind, a beautiful, eavesdropping aristocrat, enjoys her role as a meddler—er, matchmaker. The problem —she knows how to make matches for others but not for herself. She understands "surrendering to love" and swears not to have a loveless marriage. But, how does she captivate the one who causes her heart to skip beats; the reclusive country gentleman, Nicholas Kincaid.

Nicholas, who never comes to London, is in town at the request of his best friend, Gabriel Devine. Due to a wager, Gabe trust Nicholas to safeguard Rosalind from danger while on his honeymoon trip.

Nick loves Rosie. However, the problem—he fears the emotional pain associated with love and therefore guards his heart. Plus, he remains confirmed to the duty made to her brother.

Rosalind is tired of Nicholas's game-playing. If he has feelings for her, she wants him to come out with them:

"What is it, Nicholas? Why does it seem that every time I get close to you, you pull away?"

What is interesting is the author’s backstory of the parent's love experience. Here’s the question, can their parents' experiences be the cause of Nick and Rosie's conflict?

A good romance that includes a suspenseful villain; unfortunately, star reductions as readers are left wondering about secondary characters, a missing epilogue, and scenes that do not flow well.

I stumbled across Parker’s books when I recently read an article listing the “funniest Regency romances.” I am so glad that I checkout out her books from my library. Her first book, “At the Bride Hunt Ball,” had me in stitches. I have enjoyed this third book in the series. Guarding a Notorious Lady is Rosalind Devine’s story, sister to the Hero Gabriel Devine from the first book At The Bride Hunt Ball. Rosalind is a busybody, always trying to matchmake. I loved the slow build and the romantic tension in this book, and there several steamy scenes. I wish I could find more by this author, but she seems to have vanished.

GUARDING A NOTORIOUS LADY was an enjoyable ‘hero falls for his best friend’s sister’ story but it just didn't tick all the right boxes for me.

Rosalind is a charming heroine...independent, smart and funny with a penchant for matchmaking, although some would tend to call it meddling. I love how she isn’t afraid to stand up to her brother, Gabriel (At The Bride Hunt Ball)…

“Am I not only to be pitied for my unmarried state but considered utterly helpless as well?”
“See here, Rosie. You make it sound as if I think of you as a child.”
“Is it not obvious that you do?”

Rosalind’s excessive clumsiness…falling off ladders or tumbling into chairs…did seem an obvious artificial ploy by the author to have her landing in Nicholas’ arms or on his lap. It tended to make Rosalind look rather dippy.

I did have a problem with Nicholas. I understood his fear of falling in love having seen the sort of pain his father had endured after Nicholas' mother died... he doesn’t want to leave himself vulnerable to that sort of pain. But he blows hot and cold towards Rosalind, seducing her one minute and then showing complete indifference the next. Even when he realised how much his actions are hurting her, he still kept doing it!

The constant swaying of his indifference to interest to slighting her for a dance grated on her mind.

I just wanted to knock some sense into that stubborn head of his!

There were a number of delightful scenes which brought a smile to my face. For instance, where certain ladies were surreptitiously trying to peak under Nicholas’ kilt or when Nicholas has to dive under Rosalind’s bed clothes to avoid being found in her bedroom.

I liked some of the secondary characters as well:

Tristan, Rosalind’s younger brother, an endearing and witty rogue…

“Rosalind,” Tristan replied a bit desperately, “must you shout?”
“Sorry.” She pressed her lips together as she took the chair to his left.
He waved away her apology with a flick of his fingers.
“I will not ask how you’re feeling, as it is obvious.”
“I would nod,” he said quietly, “but then my head might roll off my neck.”

and Rosalind’s crotchety, old spinster Aunt Eugenia…

“You there, young man,” Aunt Eugenia replied, gesturing to Nicholas. “You were at the ball last night, were you not? I saw you talking to my nephew.”
“Aye, madam.”
“Weren’t you wearing a skirt?” Eugenia asked, giving him a once-over, the number of her chins increasing as she dipped her head.

Overall, this was an entertaining read but not as good as the first two books in the series, At The Bride Hunt Ball and To Wed A Wicked Earl.

I reviewed this book for Night Owl Reviews:

Guarding a Notorious Lady by Olivia Parker is a fun and playful regency romance. The characters are well developed and the dialogue is bright, quick and humorous. I found myself captivated by both the story and Ms. Parker’s writing style. While this is the third story in the Devine and Friends series, it can easily be read on its own.

Lady Rosalind Devine is a fun and highly energetic heroine; she’s young, attractive and rich. She’s also sneaky, a busybody and a fairly successful amateur matchmaker for others, but not for herself. For the last seven years, Rosalind has attended the London Season while her heart remains in her country home with their nearest neighbor, Nicholas Kincaid – her older brother’s best friend. Determined to marry for love, Rosalind is unable to tell Nicholas how she feels because of society’s rules. When she discovers Nicholas has come to London and is now the Marquess of Winterbourne, and her social equal, she hopes their attraction becomes much more.

Nicholas Kincaid is a very likeable character, who I sometimes wanted to grab and shake by the shoulders. Having watched his father waste away after his mother’s death, Nicholas is determined that no woman will ever own his heart. He knows he’ll have to marry and carry on the family name but is determined to marry a “sensible and quiet” woman, even though he’s been attracted to Rosalind Devine for the last seven years. Determined to repay his friend’s generosity, Nicholas agrees to secretly “guard” Rosalind when she becomes the object of a ridiculous bet during the Season. Determined to keep her at arm’s length, he can’t stop the growing desire he feels for her or the lack of self control he exhibits around her. Never the less, he’s determined she won’t get into his heart.

The scenes between Rosalind and Nicholas are a very funny. They have great physical and verbal chemistry. I really liked how Ms. Parker incorporated both of their view points in the story, though again there are several times I wanted to slap Nicholas for hurting Rosalind’s feelings. He thinks she needed to be “brought down” just a little – even though he admits she’s a lovely and generous woman. There aren’t too many secondary characters but they are well written and we get to spend time with both of their families. I especially liked Rosalind’s younger brother, Tristan, who’s somewhat irresponsible and whose engagement gets called off during the story. We also meet Rosalind’s crotchety older aunt, who manages to provide a couple of funny scenes. We also get to spend time with Nicholas’ sister and her two daughters, who are very precocious young children.

The end of the story is perfect, with Nicholas finally confronting his fears and realizing he can’t keep love at bay forever. Will Rosalind give Nicholas a chance to declare his love and take her as his wife? You’ll have to read Guarding a Notorious Lady to find out

**Reviewer's Note** The version of the book that I received was an Uncorrected Advanced Reader Copy, and therefore some issues may have been resolved by the time of final printing.

When I first started reading this book, I knew that the author, Olivia Parker, sounded familiar, but I couldn't really place her. It wasn't until I was preparing the information for this review that I realized that she's the author of one of my favorite light-hearted historical romances, At the Bride Hunt Ball, which is a delightful historical version of The Bachelor.

This is technically Book 3 in the series of interconnected characters, with both At the Bride Hunt Ball and To Wed a Wicked Earl having taken place previously, but it works very well as a standalone.

Lady Rosalind is a romantic at heart, and has rather made a reputation for herself as a successful matchmaker amongst the ton. While her brother Gabriel is away on his wedding trip with his new wife, he knows better than to leave his sister unattended, so he asks his friend, Nicholas, to watch over and protect her while he's away. The catch, of course, is that he doesn't want Rosalind to be aware of the identity of her guardian, as he knows she will simply try to find away to subvert his protection if she figures out his identity.

Nicholas has known Rosalind (and her family) for years, and agrees to both the secrecy and the protection in order to repay a debt of honor to Gabriel -- and because he can't seem to stay away from Rosalind no matter how hard he may try.

Overall, while I thoroughly enjoyed it, I wasn't completely blown away. I can't quite put my finger on what the issue was, but if I had to say something, it would be that perhaps the tone changed too often. One moment it was funny and light-hearted, then the next it was darker and more serious, and then the next it was sexy beyond belief, only to be thrown back into being frivolous and light again.

Despite that, I loved the characters, and especially enjoyed the torture of silent, unrequited love on Rosalind's side. Both Rosalind and Nicholas managed to lead each other on quite the merry chase, and in the end, they truly were perfect for each other.

I admit, as well, that I am greatly looking forward to Tristan's book, which is up next. Fans of the series will recognize him as the "bachelor" from the first novel, and should enjoy seeing him finally get leg-shackled and smacked upside the head with love.

I had a hard time with this book. It just didn't build tension like I would have liked. The storyline is good, the characters were something, but there just wasn't any need or want for me to find out how they got to their HEA. I am not really sure why. It felt like I knew the entire book before I was out of the first chapter which was frustrating.

The fact that he is Scottish-ish doesn't add anything to the story other than mind-eye-candy, which is nice except that you then wonder why on earth he is a Scot. This book had some very real possibility that I just dint think it quite lived up to. It got better toward the end, but he got so incredibly brooding it seemed like an entirely different hero at times. I really liked her personality, but one of the things that makes her who she is is prevalent in the beginning then just disappears except for mentions, and speaking of mentions the bet that is the talk of the town, and a huge reason the hero is in the story and isn't even explained! Or is it and that was something very easily missed? I've no idea, but every mention of this so called bet annoyed me because I didn't know what it was for.

So I had a hard time, because I really wanted to like it, but just didn't. Also, at the end I think there is a serious editing mistake, or part of the book is missing, because he goes from telling her to leave her door unlocked to pulling her out of the room to go swimming at night basically in the same breath and it makes no sense whatsoever. But neither does swimming at night when she nearly froze falling in the lake earlier in the day. Hopefully it gets one more good edit before publication becuase there were some errant copy edit mistakes.

I really wanted to like this book, because I really liked where she was trying to go with the characters. I thought they were worth the effort of finishing, but in the end I was disappointed. It didn't work for me.

That being said, I didn't throw it across the room, I merely fell asleep readng it, (yay for smacking myself in the face with my iPad!) I didn't roll my eyes, because nothing was preposterous, far from it, it was all much to easily accepted. And no WTFckry.

I gave it 3 stars because I really, really liked the characters.
