The Creepers series by Edgar J Hyde is a fun collection for early readers ages 6-12. These are simpler and quicker than the Goosebumps series and makes for a nice intro before you get into those. In some ways, these are also actually more modernized than the early and original Goosebumps.

When I read this (I was around 10 years old) I genuinely felt scared. I remember I actually couldnt bring myself to turn the page because I was scared of what I would read.

But looking back at the book now, I think it's definitely for children.

This series remains a bit uneven, but this is one of the more fun installments, albeit not one of the most original.

I would have loved a bit more atmosphere, whether the house or the woods around the well. The premise has a lot of promise in that regard, but we don’t get much of anything about the house and little about the woods and the well in the atmospheric sense.

Conceptually though, this is well rendered. What if you made a wish by shouting into a well without knowing it was a true wishing well? What would you do once you figured out that it was? And of course, what do you do once it becomes apparent that magic, as always, isn’t free?

As ever, I appreciate that this book doesn’t apologize for letting the protagonist take appropriate revenge on his bullies, and the ultimate solve at the end is fun and satisfying, if a touch predictable.

This would have been my favorite so far I've read of the series but it was heavily rewritten to modern times and I hate that. They swapped out the spice girls for Taylor Swift 🫩 and changed the main characters name from Tom to anther freaking Aiden in this world. No stars for me because I would like to read the original.

Terrible. Obviously tailored towards a younger audience but it's super generic when it comes to the school stuff. It's pretty boring and poorly written all around. My copy had a bunch of typos and punctuation errors.
