Never Use Pop Up Windows takes aim at the ridiculous rules of the Web. Not only concerned with Web design, it also focuses on rules that apply to communicating through the Internet. Think of the dos and don'ts and etiquette in the use of e-mail, chat rooms, and the idea of publishing everything you do or think on social sites, such as Hyves, Facebook, and You Tube. In this series, "ridiculous" is a relative term, because what is nonsense for one can be an important guideline for another. In these books, it is not about laying down the law. For each of the fifty rules covered in each book, Anneloes Van Gaalen refers to quotes by famous fellow designers who either think there is something to the rule or have made a personal variation of it. Whether you agree with them or not, the Ridiculous Design Rules books sharpen your own thoughts about the assumed truths of design, advertising, fashion, photography, and the Internet. Each rule is convincingly illustrated, with the illustrations either confirming or disproving the rule in question.
“Opinions are like a$$holes, everybody's got one.”
Having said that, we love the positive reviews we’ve received from both critics and members of the press. Which is why we ditch the rules of etiquette and blow our own horn by sharing some of the reviews with you…
"A great gift for every early adaptor you know." - Dutch Cowgirls
Interesting and enjoyable read. I read it 10 years back, it was loaned to me by a knowledgeable senior consultant in one of my ex-companies. Very stunning to know how open and flexible her mind was at her age back then. Rarely does a senior be open like her and she urged me to read this book and never be defined by the rules, which could be outed or ridiculous to adopt/follow.
Back then, many are still pretty much bounded by those de facto rules and guidelines as “best practices” and golden rules of the industry.
Glad that I read the book. I read it during my travel between my home and office back then. I can’t stop laughing out on some of them, and attracted those random stares from people during my commute.
Funny little book with rules you have to apply when using the internet. Some of these are really outdated, but some of the comment added is funny and some things are so very true. Bought it for little money and happy about it. Would have been disappointed, had I spent more.
