مقدمة لرفع الجهل عن أساسيات علم الاجتماع ونشأته والتعرف على بعض مصطلحاته.
يمكن في جملة منصفة اتقالت للمشرف العربي في المقدمة عن دور ابن خلدون الذي لم تذكره السلسة كأول من وضع أسس علم الاجتماع، والسلسلة تبدأ من علم الاجتماع بعد الثورة الفرنسية في القرن الثامن عشر.
المقدمة بسيطة كنت بحس أن مش بتشبع تمامًا من الموضوع اللي بناقشه، ثم الانتقال السريع لموضوع آخر.

It is too difficult to do justice to such a complex topic as sociology even in a book like this. It is more of a connection to read other books.

We seemed to have lost sight of the importance of society to our survival. One of the biggest culprits of that is libertarianism. Promoting the individual above the welfare of all is leading us down the path of destruction. The book does a good job of hinting at the truth of that statement, especially at the beginning where it speaks of Reagan and Thatcher. There is a tendency among ideologues to blame people for being unemployed or to call them lazy. We need to learn how to live and work together to build a sustainable future for the world's children. It may be above our abilities to find that solution.

Good introduction to the major theories of sociology and the problems that it faces. I wouldn't say this is for a total beginner since you need to know a bit about the social sciences in general but otherwise worth getting hold of.

I'm sure my Soc Theory professor borrowed from this book. It outlines the history of Sociology in a concise and easiy accessible way. The dry humor is great, too.

أول كتاب في علم الاجتماع وليس الآخر بالتأكيد، أثار اهتمامي لكثير من النظريات والمواضيع المختلفة، لكني لم أخرج من موضوعٍ واحد بفهم جيد أو مبسط له، يرميني في النظرية ويخرجني منها بلحظات، وأغلب الشرح يكون بفقاعات تحتوي كلامًا يناقض بعضه البعض، على اعتبار أنه هكذا يوضح لي اختلاف وجهات النظر تجاه النظرية، فأخرج بلا فائدة ترجى.
وعندي مآخذ أُخرى ألا وأكبرها: دَور "محور الكون" فالحياة والعلم والتطور بدأ من عندهم تمامًا، كيف أتقبَّل فكرة أن وغدًا يكتب "مؤسس علم الاجتماع هو.." ويتغافل أو يتغابى عن ذكر ابن خلدون.
أما مأخذي الآخر فهو على الترجمة لا أصل الكتاب، فقد تُرجمت بعضًا من النظريات بمفردات غير دقيقة أضاعتني، وبعض الجمل تخرج بصيغ ركيكة لا توضح أصل الكلام.

ممتاز جدا، في هذا الكتاب لن نحتاج لمعارف سابقة ولا لخلفية عميقة عن علم الاجتماع حتى تفهم هذا الكتاب حق الفهم

حتى تفهم الجهد الذي بذل في هذا الكتاب،جرب أن تقرأ أي كتاب آخر عن علم الاجتماع وانظر الفرق الكبير الذي بذله المؤلف في تبسيط وتسهيل المفاهيم المعقدة في هذا العلم

الكتاب مميز وأرشحه بشكل رئيسي لمن يريد ولوج هذا العلم المتشعب.

السلسة تتميز بالسهولة والبساطة، لكن يعيبها كثرة الأخطاء الكتابية، وخصوصا عند كتابة المصطلحات الإنجليزية، وأيضا الانتقال غير السلسل والسريع من موضوع إلى موضوع.

کتاب آشفته‌ای بود و خیلی از کارتون‌ها و نقاشی‌ها به زور و بی‌معنی جا داده شده بودند. اما بعضاً قسمت‌های جالبی هم داشت. برخلاف اسمش احساس می‌کنم برای افرادی که قصد دارند مطالعه جامعه‌شناسی رو شروع کنند گیج‌کننده باشد.

Even though the graphic design is nice. It's the sort of book that tries to talk about everything but in the end it doesn't talk about anything well enough. I never managed to really read the whole thing with pleasure because of that. Sociology is something way more interesting than what this book tries to explain about it. I also question many topics raised by the authors, for example, calling Frankfurt school for critical theory. It's a good book if you know nothing about sociology though. I'd give it 2.5 stars

As to be expected this is cutting a lot of corners. Personally, I was surprised about the omission of Niklas Luhmann's theory of self-referential social systems, which should be seen as a landmark contemporary example of grand social theory. Grand social theory, according to the authors, however is probably dead...
On a positive note, this little book does manage to introduce many relevant sociological themes, concepts, and historical names of relevance in an entertaining and concise way.

Quite ok for those who have no clue what sociology is. Exposed readers to many school of thoughts. However, p lacking in comparing and contrasting what all these thoughts mean and what they imply. My main take away is seeing lots of perspective we can use to study society, although I need to use most keywords shown in this book to learn further on my own to understand the nuances.

A very entertaining begginer's text into sociology. I am truly a beginner on the subject, but I feel I gained some knowledge and have some important starting points (well, as books suggests, if Baudrillard is right, sociology can pack up and go home. And I really want to look into Baudrillard more, but maybe that's not the right start? ) . Maybe they could have added more comment on the most important sociologist works and people, but I got a good overview in general. Also, it is written from a left(-ier) perspective (not obviously, but we can get the hints) , which I like, but wonder if all sociologists lean towards left values?:)
The best thing about this book is funny and satirical cartoons by Borin Van Loon - a penis instead of nose on a man's face in the chapter about psychoanalysis is just a bare simple example - just look at the cover! :)

This book, by approaching the study of sociology chronologically and thematically, provides a basic, if not superficial, introduction to the subject.



To those who are already acquainted with the subject of sociology, this book would thus perhaps not gain anything new from this book.



But for those totally unfamiliar with the subject of sociology, this book would perhaps provide a good starting point to understand and learn more about this broad and complex field of study.

Fragmented, bitty, and unilluminating. It bounces around and is hard to follow unless you are already familiar with the main elements of sociology. The graphics are unenlightening clipart - a man with a penis for a head having dinner, with a woman at the table commenting that she never liked Richard Head, doesn't add greatly to my understanding of sociology.

More confused about Sociology than I was prior to reading this book. Fragmentated, jumping from one fact to another, it is more than likely suited to someone with at least at little knowledge of the subject matter. I could relate a little to the 'underclass' or 'unemployed' but possibly due to the fact this is an extensive feature of today's society.

Well, the book (believe it or not) deals with introductory sociology. I quite enjoyed it. It was easy to understand, but still offered some intellectual challenges if you really wanted to get into the material.

While this book may be OK as a quick brush up on certain concepts and topics, I don't consider it as a good introduction to Sociology. There may be better books in the market.
