Neilson Voyne Smith is the Emeritus Professor of Linguistics at University College London and a Fellow of the British Academy. Variously credited as 'N.V. Smith', 'N. Smith', 'Neilson Smith', 'Neilson V. Smith', and 'Neil V. Smith', but most commonly 'Neil Smith'.
Most of the papers were quite interesting, although some were not really my cup of tea and even seemed a bit pointless. Overall I would still recommend it for linguistic musings.
Since I'm between semesters I decided it would be fun and educational to read this book, a series of essays on linguistics. The essays were almost all originally published as short articles, which made the chapters nice and manageable. Smith does a fine job of talking about pretty heavy linguistic theory without making it hard to follow. He is a good writer with interesting ideas.
