It's difficult to write a travel guide that will satisfy all travelers' needs! For my March 2010 trip, I'd already sorted out my accommodation through online research so could have done without that section, and since I'm not a foodie, I wasn't terribly interested in the restaurant recommendations. What I did find extremely useful were the maps and the list of sights to see, some of which I would never have stumbled upon on my own!
In Edinburgh, these included: * The Writers' Museum * The Museum of Childhood (very quirky) * The National Library of Scotland (which includes an awesome visual mini-museum of famous authors) * Scottish Parliament (I didn't know you could go in!) * The Queen's Gallery (breathtaking Antarctica photo exhibition)
Some of the prices were a bit out of date, but the hours were mostly correct, and I happily carried the book everywhere with me, even though I only visited Edinburgh, which is just one chapter in the book. I'd love to go back someday to the highlands and delve into the other chapters. (Given the limited time for my trip, this guide helped me settle on Edinburgh as the focus, rather than, say, Glasgow -- and it was definitely the right decision!)
Oh, and I did eat extremely well based on the restaurant recommendations -- I highly recommend David Bann (vegetarian) and the World's End Pub (they really DO have the best fish 'n' chips in Edinburgh!).
Fodor's is the best and their books are regularly updated. I have made Fodor's my go-to for travel. In this comprehensive travel guide to Scotland, the regions are broken down and highlights are listed. Where to stay, where to eat, travel times, preferred routes, sights to see - it's all here. I have used Fodor's throughout Europe and always learn thorough need-to-know information before I arrive, making travel and connections easy on arrival, and then I like to have the book on hand for quick reference, too. I will do the same with this Scotland guide.
I am planning a trip to Scotland for **hopefully** next summer with my mother. I already had an idea of most places I wanted to see, and I am not yet at the stage of looking for restaurants and specifics like that, but it was nice to see what they recommended as must see sights, and when to see them for certain tourist attractions like the Edinburgh Castle. It also allowed me to look for other possible sights near places that I had on my list.
Ehhhhhh, I didn't find this one particularly helpful. Lots of the sorts of tourist attractions we're not all that interested in, and a number of interesting things we found on our own aren't even mentioned. Worth it for a general overview, but I'm not using this one for much more than that. So far the Frommer's is working a lot better for me.
Love the Fodor's guides...I'm leafing through this one to psych myself up for next summer's trip (as if I could get more excited than I already am). And I'm very pleased to see that the B&B we're staying at in the Highlands was given the highest recommendation.
