After barely surviving an onslaught of elves and Templars and assorted monsters—not to mention the devilish machinations of an old god—Gabe and his friends had hoped for some time to recover. But when an overwhelming threat shows up on their doorstep far ahead of schedule, they quickly discover that time is yet one more force stacked against them. Along with practically everything else. So together with old friends and new, Gabe searches desperately for more allies to form an unprecedented coalition to stand against the coming End—all the while being careful not to mention that it’s at least partially his fault. But even Gabe’s rock-bottom expectations are thwarted when the shaky path he envisions for their future suddenly crumbles beneath him, and he’s taken on a wild ride far from home...straight into the grasping claws of his own nightmares. Dawn Razed is the fourth book in the Ethereal Earth series, an ongoing saga about identity and imagination...and how dangerous it is to have one without the other.

Josh Erikson doesn't have any fancy credentials to tell you about here. He lives in rural Nebraska (US) with his wife and two children, where he mostly reads, writes, and reads about writing. His many awards and accolades include some beautiful photoshopped certificates he printed at home and a yo-yo trick contest he once won at a fun fair in a grocery store parking lot.

Review copy of audiobook received from the author in exchange for an honest review.

4.5 stars.

Dawn Razed might have taken its time, but it was worth it.

A self-published series that's also superbly self-narrated by the author, the Ethereal Earth books (and audiobooks) are some of the best urban fantasy reads out there, in my opinion. I've enjoyed these stories tremendously not only because they were so much fun, but because both character development and worldbuilding were excellently executed.

It took me a while to get back into the world given that it's been quite a while since I've read the third book, Blight Marked. Fortunately, Erikson created a recap in a short story format called "Brief Gambit", which really helped to jog my memory of the key events that occurred to our main protagonist, Gabriel Delling, since he discovered there's a strange whole world of magical beings and creatures that co-exist alongside humans on Earth.

Each book has gone from strength to strength, with the pinnacle of the first arc culminating in previous book, which had an absolute stunner of a epic, climactic ending. Gabriel, or 'Gabe' as he's more affectionately known as, has finally accepted his legacy, in his own way, and it had been incredible being on this journey with him. That it took three whole decent-sized books for him to come into his own was the right move by Erikson as the only way this could be achieved realistically was by giving him time and room to grow. Right from the start of this book, Gabe found himself being thrown into the role as the leader of his small group of found family, as they sought allies to fight the impending threat of an all-devouring darkness. In the meantime, he still has to try to figure out what he actually can, or cannot do, with his powers, and time was not on his side. Gabe even had some badass scenes in this book that made me feel so proud of how far he has come. It was hard-earned, and it felt so right.

The key supporting characters were also equally important. Aside from the contribution of their unique powers and strengths to the larger cause, his relationship with Heather and friendship with the rest of them provide the much-needed emotional beats in Gabe's character arc. The story in Dawn Razed was actually quite dark, and without heart, the narrative could quickly became way too intense. The highlight of this book for me was, without a doubt, of Gabe 'winning over the enemy'. I would like to say that he did it in his usual way, but there was nothing usual with the way the plotline unraveled. But neither was it unexpected that Gabe did what he did. Ah, it was just so exciting and so good!

I've come to the point where I'm at a loss at describing the worldbuilding.  Yes, it's urban fantasy in that it's based on planet Earth, and there are magical creatures not dissimilar to vampires, witches, warlocks, elves, monsters, etc.  But you also have otherworldly realms, and cosmic powers that could threaten all of existence - hence the name of the series.  It's quite unlike anything that I've read in urban fantasy so far, while not being completely unfamiliar. And also thoroughly, fascinatingly well-conceived.

My introduction into the Ethereal Earth series was via audiobooks when I first received a review copy for the blog. While audio is not the typical medium in which I consume my books, I've listened to quite a number of them which were narrated by well-known SFF narrators such as Michael Kramer, Luke Daniels, Tim Gerard Reynolds and Ray Porter. I genuinely thought that Erikson did a stellar job self-narrating his books. His ability to voice the characters distinctively, and to deliver all the right emotional nuances and inflections were all on point. And he continued to demonstrate this proficiency well into this fourth instalment, which was by far the longest one yet.

If urban fantasy is your jam, and you're looking for something a bit different, the Ethereal Earth series is definitely worth your time.

A big thing that I love is that Erikson leaves a YouTube link to a 20 minute short story called Brief Gambit, to help catch his readers up. (If you haven’t read books 1-3, it’s not going to help much.) It gives a cool style in which the story is being told to someone else and we are hearing that conversation. There’s nothing better than a “story so far” section!

While there are many great characters in this book and series, Gabe continues to be the very best of all of them, and I love that his development in this story takes huge leaps over where he was in the first 3 books. And while Gabe is my favorite, I think Penny the sprite is a close second. She reminds me a bit of Dross from Will Wight’s, Cradle. Not that they are similar, but just by what they bring to the story as a secondary character, and also almost always stealing the spotlight when she shows up.

“The only real fantasy out here is that there can ever be something so luxuriantly easy as an objective truth.”

Another thing I love about Mr. Erikson is that he does his own narration. He has done a tremendous job so far, and this may be his best work yet! The emotion in his voice when you hear the tremble or the ache just sucks you in and makes you feel how terrified the character is or how much distress the character is in. It sucked me in and my eyes were glued to see what would happen next.

I really need to add more urban fantasy to my repertoire, so far the only two I have read in the sub-genre is Josh Erikson and Dyrk Ashton, and I can’t get enough of either of them. Erikson’s, Ethereal Earth series is such an easy and fun read, and as much as I loved the first 3 books, Dawn Razed takes it to another level! I giggled so much with all of the pop culture references and the puns and the timing of the puns. One thing Josh can do, he’s going to make you smile, more than likely giggle, and maybe even a belly laugh. The other thing that Erikson does well is action, and man is this book filled to the brim with tons of incredible action. I didn’t think what happened in book 3 could be topped, but he did it and I can’t wait to see how he raises the bar in book 5!

I received a copy in exchange for an honest review.

“If you want to find ma gic, go to the transitions. That’s where it lives. The spots where things shift, big or small. The between moments. The connecting places or crossroads. The borders where two firm edges blend together like dawn, dusk, birth or death…or the instant of any change of any stripe where power coalesces like foam at the bend of a raging river. That’s where you’ll feel it. And that’s why we fear it. Change. Because in the single step between one place we know and one we don’t, anything could happen. And sometimes does.”

- Excerpt from CONscience

Dawn Razed is the fourth book in Erikson’s Ethereal Earth series, which I’ve followed almost since its debut. These past few years have been a journey for sure and it’s interesting to see what series I got stuck with for the long run, and which I abandoned – not due to dislike, but because my preferences changed. Ethereal Earth is one of those I keep following, as I have a special place in my heart for UF. But Dawn Razed made me wonder if we drifted apart in the past two years since book 3 came out. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed my time with Gabe and the crew again, but I felt like something was missing. And I don’t think that it’s Erikson‘s or the book’s fault necessarily. Maybe the timing was of the essence here. I don’t know. But either way, if you’ve been along for the ride this far, then you definitely won’t be disappointed.

I admit, my memories of book 3 were pretty rusty and my notes from the past didn’t help much either. And since I barely made any notes this time, the problem certainly will come back to bite me in the ass. It took a while for me to get refamiliarised with the characters, especially the events. For not much time passes between books 3 and 4 within the world.

Gabe and his friends are still trying to find allies to fight against the Endless Dark, which is not as endless anymore, thanks to Gabe. At the same time, different forces have different ideas about how to handle Gabe himself. Some want revenge on him, some want to use him for their own ends. Neither of these sounds like a good option to him. And then he also needs to come to terms with his apparent role as the leader of their small family. It’s interesting to watch his arc throughout the book, as he discovers his new skills, comes to terms with some things, and generally tries to find his own place in their team’s dynamic. Not talking about his relationship with Heather – it’s great to see them growing together. And I still love his voice coming through the chapter opening excerpts.

As we get further into the series, the cast keeps growing. One of the newest addition is Cadeau, an elf trying to save Elfhame from its eminent doom. Erikson did a pretty good job with him as a character, even if he won’t become my favorite, probably. But hey, never say never. Penny, on the other hand, definitely will. She is the best. Even if she would drive me crazy in real life.

The Ethereal Earth series always was a mix between UF and epic grimdarkish fantasy with some progression fantasy elements as Gabe keeps “leveling up”. And Dawn Razed fits into this mash-up pretty well. I don’t know if it’s me, but somehow this one had a darker undertone to it. This series never was about rainbows and sunshine, but this book gave me heavy feelings about its atmosphere. It was one imminent doom after another and after a while, it became kind of daunting to read it – or listen to it in my case. And I think it didn’t really help that despite the fact it was packed with action, sometimes it felt dragging because of the overuse of descriptions and generally just making some scenes take forever to move forward. With its 690 pages, Dawn Razed is the longest in the series, and I can’t help thinking that trimming it down a bit would have helped immensely, in my opinion. Then again, I’m not a big fan of chonky books, so take that as you will.

That being said, I think I enjoyed the second half of the book more once all the main characters in this particular book started coming together and Elfhame came into focus. Although I understand the choices Erikson made to build up the story until that point. But the feeling of heaviness didn’t only come from the doomy atmosphere, but also the themes Erikson explored in this book. Helplessness, loss, grief, making choices when there aren’t necessarily good choices, to begin with. The banter between Gabe and Heather and the humorous moments sprinkled throughout the book do help to lighten things up, however – and I still love the sass. But I think Dawn Razed needs a certain frame of mind to enjoy fully.

Just because I wasn’t into Dawn Razed as much as the rest of the series so far, doesn’t mean I won’t keep following Gabe to see what mess he gets himself into next. I know Erikson plans this series to go on for a while, but I also hope we’ll get a clearer image of where the story is heading overall because right now it feels a little bit aimless and a touch repetitive. I guess we’ll see. I still heartily recommend the Ethereal Earth series to those who are looking for something different within the UF subgenre. It’s witty, and dark, and brings together mythological creatures with a cosmic twist. In Dawn Razed Erikson definitely raises the stakes and it’s going to be interesting to see how far Gabe can be stretched before he breaks.

*I proof-read this novel and received a free ARC of the final book, with no obligation to review at all. This review is unbiased and represents my own personal opinions.*

Regular readers will know I have loved all of the three novels (and the short story collection) in Josh Erikson’s Ethereal Earth series so far, and not only is this fourth book no exception, it is the best so far!

At this point in the series, you definitely do need to have read the previous instalments as we are quite far into an overarching story arc and there has been so much fantastic character development to bring us to this point. Honestly, you’d be missing out on so much if you didn’t catch up first!

For fellow fans, we start this story with the aftermath of Gabe’s face-off with the Endless Dark, which is not quite as endless as it used to be, but still plenty dark! The whole gang are working well together as a team now and are looking to recruit new member to the cause… ideally everyone – everyone would be nice – in preparation for the impending possible-Apocalypse. So we have Gabe and Heather (of course), Dante, James, Penny and Belle, Hwei-Ru, Ken, the return of Mutambe and Su, plus assorted vampires, many elves and some familiar cameos from Aka Mana, Black Lan and more.

And we join them in a whirl of action, humour, magic, pathos and clever twists and turns as they attempt to grapple with the fruits of what Gabe sowed earlier, before said fruits destroy Elfhame and then the rest of the world.

Erikson’s worldbuilding is fantastic, his characters are superb – quirky, snarky and kickass – and the plot is perfectly paced and balanced between the more emotional and contemplative moments and the explosive running, fighting, and scraping together limited resources to manage one more desperate spell. The stakes get higher and higher and Gabe’s Scooby Gang face ever-increasing enemies and ever-decreasing odds, which is nerve-wracking because there isn’t a single character I would willingly part with at this point!

If you enjoy your urban fantasy mixed up with some epic and grimdark elements, this series has all of the banter , love, warmth and heart you could want in the face of nearly-Endless Dark, sacrifice, pain and loss.

This is definitely a series to keep, collect, re-read, and I hope it has plenty left to come… I can’t wait for Book 5!

Highly enjoyable book 4. Epic urban fantasy series of cosmic proportions. Recommended!

Each book in this series gets better and better and book 4 is no exception! A dark urban fantasy that hits all my favorite spots. One of my all time favorites for sure. Cerebral, funny, mysterious and action packed with cosmic consequences right and left. Gabe and crew travel to many exotic realms and see many creatures and terrifying beings then usually end up in a battle with them. This is a fantastic dark urban fantasy with laughs, loves and friendship…. Oh and probably cosmic Armageddon thanks to Gabe and his ability to do the impossible because he doesn’t know it’s impossible. Recommended!!

I do thoroughly enjoy this series, from the banter, to the CONscience blurbs at the start of every chapter, the wild magical concepts in trying to explain something unexplainable, and the incredible stakes. I could go on, but I'm sure you get the point.

If you've read the previous books, you know what your going into and your going to have a great time (although I think I did myself a bit of a disservice in not having another read through the previous books to remind myself of a few plot points that I thought I remembered.) If you haven't read the previous books, well I strongly recommend picking up the first volume and giving it a go.

This is the continuing story of Gabe, Heather, and their friends (and ....friends?) as they fight against the evil End that is coming. The homeland of the elves is especially in danger, and Gabe and friends find themselves helping one of their biggest enemies. Without spoiling the first books in the series, it's up to Gabe and his friends to shenanigans their way into saving the day, and maybe also the universe?

I really enjoy Gabe's sense of humor, and how Heather returns it. Their adventures together, while they get particularly dark at times, are lightened up by their quick wit.

This is the sort of audiobook that you can start listening to and before you know it you're 8 hours in and have done all your weekend chores in one day. It's narrated by the author, and like the previous books, he does a fantastic job with it. I think he's getting better and better each volume he narrates.

I recommend the Ethereal Earth series if you like a chonky urban fantasy that doesn't feel so chonky when you get going with it.
