Assembling the Wingpeople

Rate this book
Can Tilda uproot her life and start again when her personality avoids risk-taking at every opportunity? Is Bea really in love with Mal or is her HRT causing emotional turbulence? And how long can Stewart use his estranged father’s death as the reason he has given up on himself? Three people; three works in progress. Perhaps all it takes is one great weekend of connection, some belting nineties tunes, and a reminder of who they used to be before life got in the way. From the author of Carry the Beautiful, Assembling the Wingpeople is a witty and honest look at getting older, the hang ups that never leave, and the struggle to find meaning without the societal brownie points of kids, spouse, and career.

"Assembling the Wingpeople" by Nicky Bond is a contemporary fiction revolving around three main characters: Tilda, Bea & Stewart. Sometimes you see a book & you just get the feeling that you have to read it no matter what. I saw this book before it was published on the writer's profile & I had the 'feeling' about it & I'm really glad I signed up for it.

🌸After reading it, when you think back to it, it feels like you've watched a movie about getting old, about finding your true self & about the importance of people in your life. All the characters, all the scenes go through your mind like a film.

🌸It is really engaging, at points really witty & humourous. The characters are so lively & believable! The writing is lucid & flowy. It is really good!

🌸The best thing is that the characters are middle aged & the book talks about their problems & their personalities. It was different & I loved it! The idea of 'wingpeople' was really cool.

🌸Bea is a carefree, independent woman. She's so full of life!
Tilda is starting all over again after getting a divorce, she's alone & no one would know if she died in the shower. She desperately wants friends or as she calls them "Wingpeople". She's the complete opposite of Bea; she likes monotony, she has never taken any risks.
Stewart is a slightly messed up person, has had an abusive father who made him think of himself as nothing, so after his father's death, he just doesn't know who he is, was or will be. He has no aim, no sense of present or future, it's just the past & the past is haunting him.

🌸I loved how the characters' lives intertwined, how they acknowledged their shortcomings, how they understood what they needed in life, how beautifully their characters grew & how they were there for each other.

🌸The cover is so unique! & of course the title grabs your attention as soon as you read it!

Well! This was such a different book to what I'm used to. I was immediately drawn into it by the first few chapters, I was so intrigued with how the characters would mix.

I love how it's not just a story about the reunion but we get into all the minds of the three main characters.

This was a thought provoking book. It made me think differently about how my life is viewed. I really enjoyed how honestly it was to real life and I'm sure we could all relate to each character in some way.

The book follows Bea and Tilda, old friends while they plan a reunion with university friends. We also meet Stewart, who knows Tilda. All three have their own issues and insecurities.

This book follows the life of Tilda, Bea & Stewart. Each have their own troubles, their own shit to deal with and get through. Can one weekend remind them of what’s important in life and help them find their way?

This book initially caught my eye because of the unique cover and I’m glad I went on my instinct to then read the blurb & the book.

I was drawn into this book by the first chapter, I love a good character driven book so I knew from then I was gonna love it. I connected to the characters so well and my opinions changed on certain people as the book went on.

My main takeaway from this book was that sometimes our overthinking and anxieties can prevent us from doing things, and sometimes the things we dread the most turn out to be wonderful experiences.

The only reason this drops a star for me is because I wanted more! Either an epilogue or a few more chapters set in the future, but I also get very attached to characters so maybe that wouldn’t have been enough for me either 🥲

This is Nicky Bonds second novel, and because of it I have put her first novel on my list to read.

This is a beautiful book about the struggles and challenges that we can face when we start getting older. This book is written in multiple POV, Tilda, Bea and Stuart.

Tilda made the decision 18 months ago to completely change her life and leave her husband to discover what it really is she wants from life. Currently, it’s chips from her favourite fish and chip shop once a month. Living in a small flat on the coast of Wales.

Bea has been in and out of more relationships than she’s had hot dinners. Which is why it’s surprising that she finds herself settling down with Mal. However, she starts to wonder if maybe this could be the doing from her HRT which has been playing with her emotions lately.

Lastly, we have Stuart, a stiff in a suit. He’s been using his father’s death as an excuse for why he’s totally given up on… well everything really, despite his controlling father passing away two years ago, Stuart has been struggling to find the motivation to do anything.

Tilda and Bea catch up one night and after one too many cocktails, Tilda receives a message. One of Tilda’s old university friends is coming to England from Australia. Bea uses this as the perfect opportunity to get all of Tilda’s uni friends together for a weekend. Tilda then receives an email from Stuart, who comes across rather forcefully that he’d like to meet with Tilda too. Bea offers to plan the whole reunion and suggests inviting Stuart as a killing two birds with one stone sort of thing. Bea, unsure of things with her own life, would love nothing more than a project to distract her from her relationship with Mal. So Tilda reluctantly accepts Bea’s offer.

This is such a witty, funny, honest and heart-warming book, I loved all the characters in this, especially Bea. I just absolutely adored her! If you enjoyed The Switch or seen The Marigold Hotel, I’d highly recommend this book! It will have you laughing in parts and crying in others.

💞 #BookReview - Assembling The Wingpeople 💞

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
[Gifted/Ad] Thank you so much to @lovebookstours for sending me a copy of this book! ❣️

Assembling The Wingpeople is a character based novel, following the lives of three characters. Tilda, Bea and Stuart each face their own challenges and issues, which eventually lead to their lives intersecting at a reunion by the sea.

The character development and growth throughout this book is amazing. We see realisations of self-worth, self-love and self-acceptance. We see relationship breakdowns and relationship formation. We see dealings with grief and panic attacks. We see major life changes and life redirections. All of these themes are ones we all deal with in our daily lives and it was lovely to read about our characters going through it all! 👏

My favourite thing about this book was the humour and the friendship. We all need Wingpeople in our lives; those pals and family members that we can call in times of need, or chat to whilst we wallow like a hippo in the bath, or get advice from when our partners are being absolutely ridiculous. I hope you all have your Wingpeople in mind when you read this book - I know I did!!! ♥️

If you like character driven books with humour and self reflective vibes, this may be the book for you. I was pleasantly surprised by this one and thoroughly enjoyed it - especially the second half. 👏

This book is so relatable and thought provoking. If everyone needs six people in their life to be our wing people like the books suggests. Do you know yours?

I always believed that we need these people in our lives that we call no matter the emergency. Be that heartbreak, lost in the woods or a cup of sugars. The size of the emergency is not import the people are.

I definitely had throwback vibes and my own little soundtrack in my heart as I navigated their lives with them. And I truly felt I was experiencing life with them. Highs, lows and not known as in life are all involved in this book. I love that like in real life we had calmer slower parts of the story.

I have a favourite soundtrack from the 90’s ‘everybody’s free (to wear sunscreen’. I find the word relevant for this book.

Bond’s ability to let her characters shine and develop and grow holistically she’s her amazing writing style. The characters witty sense of humour had me laughing out loud and smiling as you find something to relate too. I often related to the characters as they reminded me of my own wing people. Which made me feel privileged to read this book even more. You never know someone else’s complete story and this book is like looking behind closed doors.

I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to read and review this little beauty of a book. Thank you so much @BondieLa and

My thoughts:
The premise of having six of your own wing people, whom you can count on, is what attracted me to the book. The second reason I signed up for the book tour was because it promised a humorous read. And it didn’t disappoint. That the characters were middle aged was the third reason I chose to read this book. It was simple, relatable and easy to read.

Thank you @lovebookstours and @bondiela for the e-version of the book and a spot on the book tour.

Even before I began to read I sat down to think if I could put down 6 names as my ‘wing people’ who would be just a phone call away.

Can you?

This book was gifted to me in exchange for an honest review.

This book is not at all what I was expecting looking at the cover and the title, (to be honest I only applied because my last name is Wing 😂) but it was so entertaining and such a wholesome story that I was pleasantly surprised!

It gave me similar sort of vibes to Eileen’s story in The Switch, in that we are following a couple of slightly older women (in their 50s I believe) trying to regain some youth in their lives and start fresh.

I really liked all the characters and was rooting for all of them! Tilda and Bea’s relationship is serious friendship goals! They were both so hilarious and there were so many laugh out loud moments! They’re also both very hecky on a night out and I want to go drinking with them for sure 😄

Their love lives are struggling, and it was lovely to see both of their self development as the story progressed and they realised what each of them are actually wanting out of life, and setting boundaries in certain areas.

Definitely recommend if you enjoyed The Switch, as it was a really cute and wholesome story with a lot of fun and lovable characters! 🥰

Nicky Bond’s Assembling the Wingpeople has three interchanging and interconnected narratives: Bea, Tilda, and Stewart. All middle-aged and stuck at a crossroads in their lives, I loved the focus on characters who’re older. Literature, and particularly film, often likes to omit middle-aged characters or use them to simply stand in as parents etc. To have three middle-aged protagonists with their own story arcs was really refreshing and was a nice change to the usual discourse. Makes you realise just how bad the representation is when you’re happy to see autonomous characters in their 40s and 50s merely living 🤣

Bond has a really natural way of writing; the prose flows effortlessly, the dialogue is realistic, and the relationships authentic and believable. Centred around the reconnection of friendships, and journey to finding your self again, this is an excellent and comforting read that is reassuring in it’s revelation that no matter what age you are you never feel like you have it together aka we’re all in this together. Definitely worth the read!

I don’t know how I feel about this book, I feel my mind is boggled and can’t articulate the way this book made me feel. I do think it was very interesting to read and the moral of the story very original and interesting.

Its a very thought-provoking read and I think this is why I am finding it hard to process it. I am very much a ‘here and now’ thinker, the future holds so much uncertainty I sometimes like to be in control of what is happening in my life at the present moment. It is interesting to think about what your life would be like in the future and who would be there; who would have left and who would have been brought in?

The characters were likeable and the story well written. The characters had their own challenges to face in life (as do we all) and it was interesting to see how the dealt with each obstacle life threw at them.

I thought it to be a very interesting read about growing old (why can’t we all be like Peter Pan, haha!)

Thank you to @lovebooktours for arranging this tour and to Nicky Bond for allowing me a copy of your book.

Three characters… Tilda, Bea and Stewart who are all connected in some way. Mystifying right? I absolute adored the message behind this book of having people in your life for different reasons and how they are there to help you. Especially the essence of having ownership of who you are as a person.

Although a slightly odd beginning where you are not too sure where the plot will go. When you learn about the characters and understand the backstory and build up this becomes a more exciting read. For me it gave me that feeling of looking forward to experiencing more in my life.

If you love a book that focuses on friendships, life, relationships and becoming yourself this is definitely the sort of read for you. The book gave me a flash back to my teenage years which I really enjoyed. Take a step back and look at everything you’ve achieved in your life.

This was a nice break from the gory horrors I’ve read lately. Definitely need to read more from this author was so uplifting, emotional and satisfying.

𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗪𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 is a witty, feel- good novel about getting old. It follows the three main characters: Tilda, Bea and Stewart as they face this chalenging period where everything seems to be slipping out of their feet and loneliness along with hopelessness creep in. Turns out, a single call to a friend may change your whole life.

Ah, this book was a pleasure to read! Nicky Bond's prose is light and amusing while the characters are authentic and likable. They are in no way perfect but who is? The growth and insecurities that Tilda, Bea and Stewart overcome are highly inspiring. At the end of the day, everyone needs a wingman, a friend to talk to when life becomes unbearable.

This was a nice easy read that made me think about my old school friends. It didn't blow me away, but was a good heartwarming story.

I love the thought that everyone needs 6 wingpeople in their life, 6 people who would drop everything for you if you needed - made me think of mine and smile. The way they all helped to improve each other was great too.

Whilst I liked the characters, I wouldn't say I was overly emotionally invested - but I don't know why? Additionally, I felt the prologue was a bit misleading, as that's not the key point of the story, just a part of it.

Overall, if you need a break from murders and hauntings, then this book is a warm fuzzy to read and to restore faith in people.

This was a really great read. Although it is about a time of life I'm yet to experience, I could relate to the characters, particularly Tilda and her feelings of loneliness.
I really liked the concept of having six wing-people in your life, those who you can count on at any time. It really made me think about who my wing-people might be and also who am I a wing-person for. Lots to think about. The writing was easy to read and I liked the conversational tone between the characters. Some of the topics were heavy but ordinary life, gave a good insight into how we, normal people, deal with whatever life throws at us - sometimes it's not always gracefully but we're only human!

I'm not usually one for comedy reads, but turns out this was just the thing I needed! I've been having a stressful couple weeks to say the least, so this was the perfect read to relax with at the end of the night.

Although I initially thought that it would be a lighthearted read, the book was anything but that - it felt real, emotional, raw, and complex, and I loved discovering how the lives of Tilda, Bea, and Stewart would start to intertwine! Despite wanting to have a light read, it felt like this book came at the perfect time for me, and I really enjoyed having a more personal read for once!

It's also definitely a book that makes you think about your own life, and who you have surrounding you! Do you have your close six, your 'Wingpeople' - those that you know will be there for you, no matter where you are in life?

When I read this blurb I thought it would be an enjoyable, lighthearted read but it turned out to be so much more.
I loved the characters, Tilda, Bea and Stewart. Three very different people who are all linked and all at a crossroads in life. I always think its refreshing to read about older characters in books, life does go on after your thirties.
While this was a lighthearted piece of fiction I loved the message that no matter what its never too late to change something and realise that you are more and you deserve more in your life.
I'd absolutely love a sequel to this, another reunion a few years down the line. I'd love to catch up with these old and new friends again.
Really well written and well paced. A great read.

One of the first things that drew me to this book was the front cover, it looked so unique for a book (it also reminded me of a mcfly music video!) , then I read the blurb and realised I just had to read it!

In this book we explore the lives of 3 people , we have Tilda , Bea and Stewart , in this book they go through the ups and downs , the stages of getting older , finding purpose in later life... but it is all done is a humorous, witty way with plenty of things to laugh at throughout the book .

Even though the book is in the view of 3 different people's lives it still flows nicely through them ,there isn't confusion and it doesn't leave you wondering what is happening. It is very cleverly written and is a brilliant , uplifting read

Tilda, Bea and Stewart these three people is dealing with their problems. One reunion, and these three people found what they want. This book is about friendship and making new bonds. I kind of like the book. This book shows that sometimes talking with your friends or new friends can give you solution or help you to see things. Sometimes the only thing you need is a good friend. I found it very hard to write this review. I think I couldn't put everything in a better way. If you like my review, go buy the book.

I was gifted this book in exchange for a honest opinion. Thank you so much for providing me a copy.

Each of us need a minimum of six wingmen. We need six phone numbers that can be called in an emergency.
We need a team of six around us. All of us. All the time.

The book follows the 3 main characters Tilda, Bea and Stewart, they are all facing their own challenges in life.
I liked how each of them developed and changed as the story progressed.
It was a easy, feel good read. Perhaps a little slow in places but I enjoyed it and found myself keen to find out how everything was going to pan out.
I will definitely read more from this author in the future.

I adored this book, it was such a relatable read. I didn't realise it was a follow on from Nicky's last book, so going to be reading that one soon too.

Wingpeople, according to the book are the team of six people that we all should have to hand, whether it be to ring them for a chat, incase of an emergency or just because.

A well written, witty & warm character driven story about getting old.

Many thanks to Love Books Tours for my tour spot & gifted copy.

This story follows Tilda, Bea and Stewart and how they are trying to get more control over their lives. I loved how the characters all had a back story which meant they ended up in a place they never meant to be and I felt for all of them! I think it started a bit slowly to introduce the characters but as it progressed I thought it all made sense. I really enjoyed this book and am now off to plan my next chip shop visit 🤣

I really enjoyed this book! It was such a warm lighthearted read about three lonely souls who are trying to navigate life and find their perfect ‘Wingpeople’ to call on when they need.

It really made me think about what my life might be like when I’m older and who I would call in my darkest moments.

And can we just look at the matte cover and the design of this book for a second because it’s beautiful! I’m obsessed 😍

This is a great palate cleanser from all the horrors and thrillers of spooky season.

I loved thinking about the 6 people in my life whilst reading this book. However I feel like this detracted from me really getting to know the characters.

Definitely a great read for a cozy night in as it’s easy to read and a nice read.

A great sequel to Carry the Beautiful. After reading that book, I was left wondering how the lives of Tilda and everyone around her would turn out. Here I found the answers! I'm in the same age range as the main characters and found them relatable. They were well-rounded and their personalities came through, especially in the dialogue, which is great, by the way. A feel-good read, and one that gets you thinking about your own life, and how things turn out, or how they could be different.

Thank you to @lovebookstours for my copy of this book.

I loved this book, easy to read, impossible to put down and loads of fun.

The main character, Tilda, seemed a bit fragile and lonely with no sense of adventure as the book went on, but this overshadows the adventures she had at the beginning. She was, without doubt, my favourite character in this story. Stewart and Bea are great in their own ways, but Tilda was my fav 😊

I had to go back and check a couple of times who one of the reunion characters was as there was a couple that didn’t really appear in the storyline, just as part of the group but not more than that.

This is a brilliant adventure about love, friendship and change. Go read it.

Tilda has uprooted herself from her marriage and life and finds herself after having a mid-life gap year travelling around the UK in a campervan, sort of settled into a new life in Wales.

Bea is a 52-year-old single woman who is generally content with her life having recently been promoted at work and finding herself in a relationship. However, she is menopausal, on HRT and the mixed-up hormones could be causing emotional turmoil and confused feelings.

And then there’s Stewart. He is lost, given up on himself, not sure what he is meant to be doing with his life. He’s never been happy following the footsteps of his father and taking over the family business and when his father passed away, Stewart turned his back on responsibility and avoided all necessary aspects of his life.

All three are lost and in need of being found and set back on the right paths. They are all connected in one way or another and this connection brings them together for a weekend of reminiscing happier carefree times in the 1990s in hope of finding themselves again.

Assembling the wingpeople, is just that. It's bringing the people around you that hold you up and back you up, the ones who support you through life and bringing them back together when life is beginning to fray at the seams. When life gets in the way, we need to be reminded of who we are, let our hair down and reconnect with the people we care about and have fun!

It did take me a good 80 or so pages to get into the book as I struggled to connect with the characters. I really didn’t like Tilda or Bea, and well Stewart is not meant to be liked. However, when the story got going and the build-up to the reunion was in full swing, there we good little twists and unknowns that dropped into the story which caught my interest and attention and my feelings towards them all completely changed by the end.

"Wingmen are the team of supporters that each of us curate. They're the cheerleaders that egg on a person to reach their potential. They're the friends that can be called day or night, when a shoulder to cry on is essential. They're the people to phone when one is rushed to hospital and needs a toothbrush and a change of underwear."

If you were to describe Tilda in one word, it'd be safe. She's never taken risks, or been spontaneous, and it's worked so far for her. She's always had a plan. But now she's trying to jump start her life after her plans fell apart and searching for the courage to take a leap.

Bea is falling in love. Or at least, she thinks she is anyway. But she isn't sure if she wants him or just wants someone.

And ever since Stewart lost his estranged Father, he's given up. Given up on himself, on his work, on most things actually. He says losing his Dad is the reason behind it all - is it, or is it just an excuse to avoid facing his real problems?

With everything going on in their lives, these three have almost lost sight of who they are - but when they get together for a big reunion weekend, it's time to try and reconnect with friends and maybe even themselves.

Witty and dryly funny, this hilariously relatable story is all about growing up and getting old. Packed full of astute observations about how grown up it feels when you start getting excited about your kitchen, to how potent and deadly hangovers become with age, Nicky Bond will call you out and feel absolutely no shame about it. This story answers the question, 'Does anyone really ever feel like a grown-up?' with a resounding hell no.

A follow-up to Bonds 2017 book 'Carry The Beautiful', this story can definitely hold up as a stand-alone novel but you should definitely check it out anyway!

Although a little slowly paced at times, I found myself curious about our three friends and their circles, and watched them change and develop from people with the one defining characteristic we are introduced to into fully rounded, very real people who grow and learn. All of them were frustrating, annoying at times, and I'm pretty sure I'd be friends with them anyway.

Three People. Three works in progress.
