Life in a township is hard. Even more so if your mother is an unemployed alcoholic with a constant stream of unfamiliar male visitors who leave money under her pillow upon their departures. Dancing fills the void in Byron Carelse’s life; it allows him to forget for a short while, to be consumed by something that makes him feel alive; it is his passion; his dream; his happy place.

When Byron, his best friend, Tasha, and other kids from the area are offered the opportunity to take part in a show at a big arts festival, it seems like the opportunity of a lifetime. But all is not as it seems, and Byron is forced to make a few difficult choices.

This book for children deals with the challenges of growing up amidst alcoholism and poverty and carries a message of hope where there otherwise would be none. The illustrations, by Zenelda McDonald, are modern and age appropriate and enhances the text throughout. Contact details for Childline are also included.

The book is also available in Afrikaans as ‘Dromers’. It is written in uncomplicated, simple language, making it especially suitable for reluctant young readers and second/third language speakers.
