This adventure had a little "comic relief" to lighten the mood in the form of an orphaned puppy who adopts Silver Chief. And just when you think the action is over (I thought at this point, "wait? who exactly did Silver Chief rescue?") in the last 10 or 15 pages, Silver Chief saves the day again! I would recommend this for at least 10 and over for situations and the level of language used (not foul language, just vocabulary). At least by my standards. But it's kind of a dilemma--I don't think children should read about violence (there is shooting at other people in this book), yet kids (boys especially, i think) learn and grow from imagining themselves in heroic rescue/perseverance situations. I loved these books when I was in 4th grade.

"Silver Chief To The Rescue" was an enjoyable dog story in read in 1967 for an assignment. It takes place in the Northwest in the winter . Jim Thorne is a member of the RCMP and Silver Chief is his dog. Silver Chief befriends a young dog named Mickey in a subplot.

I found a .pdf version of this book on the internet. Usually, I can read .pdfs on my kindle, but not this one. I had to read it on my telephone.

Anyway, this is the second of the Silver Chief adventures. As I mentioned in my "review" of the first Silver Chief, these books were favorites of mine when I was a kid back in the Eisenhower years.

In this book, a small outpost is suffering by an outbreak of a deadly disease, perhaps typhus. I don't fully remember. It seems that all is lost, when Sgt. Jim Thorne of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police charges in with life-saving serum. Getting there was only possible, of course, because Sgt. Thorne's dog sled team was led by Silver Chief, the magnificent half wolf, half husky that Sgt. Thorne caught and tamed in the first book.

They have some other adventures after they save the outpost. In particular, Jim and Silver Chief are adopted by a puppy, Mikey. They also track down and re-capture the notorious half breed, Joe Laval. Someone they had captured in the first book.

I dunno, it seemed this book was even sillier than the first one. But still, I'll likely move on to the third book in the series. I actually have a dead-tree copy of it on one of my book shelves. It seems that we "rescued" it from the library in the New Hampshire town where I found my spouse some fifty-five years ago.

This is really a ***+ book, i.e. better than a mere ***.

it was ok. There was a little too much down times that took away from the adventure parts. Story and clues were too obvious. The addition of a puppy somehow didn't do anything for me. Treatment of Indians still bad. But no sinister wolves in this one.

Old books can be kinda cute though, like when his son says, "You're swell to me, Daddy" and Jim says back, "I'm pretty fond of you, Son" Wish the book had been more swell.

This was my Dad's book and I think it's perfect for kids of the 30's, 40's & 50's.

The illustrator is Kurt Wiese, who did the Freddy the pig books.
The edition with color pictures is just beautiful.

I loved the dogs, hated the ending and grit my teeth through the era's racism.

Another fun reread about Silver Chief.
This one comes a few years after the first one and it's quite different. Just as much fun to read though and plenty of action and excitement as well as a bit of mystery.
Some swear words.

I read this book once when I was a kid and loved it, so I decided to reread it now and see what I think. It was not as amazing as I remembered, but it was still a good adventure book and if I was still a kid who only read animal stories, this would be a must read.

I have really enjoyed this author. I especially enjoy reading outdoor books written before 1960 and I have liked all of his novels so far.
