ALL DREAMS COME TRUE IN LAS VEGAS, DON'T THEY...?

Jamie
and Izzy, friends for ever, have a dream: a spangly double wedding in Las Vegas. And, at twenty-seven, they decide they've had enough crap boyfriends and they're ready for crap husbands: all they have to do is find them.

So where better than Las Vegas itself, where the air is 70% oxygen and 30% confetti?

But as they abandon their increasingly complicated lives in sleepy Devon for the eye-popping brilliance of Las Vegas, their groom-grabbing plan starts to look less than foolproof.

And those niggling problems they thought they'd left behind - like Izzy's fiancé and the alarming reappearance of Jamie's first love - just won't go away...

I'm used to chick lit books developing much of the same way. I expect fluffy, sassy, ad romantic. For the most part Belinda Jones delivers if those are pretty much the only things that you're looking for to call a book good.
It starts off so slow, so ridiculously slow that I had to question whether this was worth the read. Two friends, Jaime and Izzy, travel to Las Vegas to find love and get married.
It truly irks me when a character is so self deprecating that it becomes annoying. Jaime is that and more.
She has three things, a crappy support system that includes her bitchy, mean sister Nadine, her really horrible father that finds every moment to demean her and her best friend of nearly two decades, Izzy. I think Izzy really puts the icing on the cake of why are you still even friends with this person. She's selfish and has a bad sense of self worth as well, except where Jaime's confidence is practically nonexistent, Izzy's is through the roof. Generally that would make for a good match but even as they attempt to show you that they are friends til the end, I was just like ugh! Find better friends.
a crappy love life: she dates guys younger than her and considering she's only in her late twenties that means she's practically dating high shoolers which I found disgusting. Jaime actually carries herself like she's about to hit forty so the entire time I was reading this I couldn't help but picture an older woman going through a mid life crisis. Any ways, all of her relationship has been fails because she holding out for a love lost. It's pretty ridiculous but whatever.
crappy self worth: why does she constantly put herself down> It's not fun to read when a person is so gung ho about being sad and not that much of a looker compared to her friend that likes to pimp herself out. Comparing herself to her sister or to just about anyone she meets is truly what ruined her character. We get it, you're ugly and you're never getting married even though you had sex with about twenty guys.
Some of the other things that really had me puzzled was the idea that apparently people in England have disposable incomes and jobs because how in the world are they just paying for plane tickets from across the seas. There's no way those things are cheap. And the amount of time it took to get the point aross this damn book. I was just like seriously? Can we move this along.
There were funny parts though. English characters tend to be a lot funnier than the american ones.

I couldn’t finish it, it’s the worst book I’ve ever read. Truly awful. All they’re interested in is finding a man and how they look. Utter tripe. Made me feel sick. Going in the bin.

I'm a real fan of Belinda Jones and love all her books - mainly because they offer something more than just the standard chick lit - they also give a real flavour for the location of the book. Belinda's descriptions of these exotic locations make you feel as if you've visited by the end of the book and definitely make you want to visit if you haven't already!

I enjoyed this story and was rooting for the main character to choose the right guy - and I love the inclusion of this interaction between Oprah and Madonna:

Oprah: "What is the most important thing you are going to teach your daughter?"

Madonna: "Self-respect."

Oprah: "And what are you going to teach her about men?"

Madonna: "If I teach her self-respect, I don't have to teach her about men."

That was a definite oh yes moment. It's not my favourite Belinda Jones book but I love all of them so it's up there!

💍 2.3

Honestly it wasn't all that bad, but I couldn't really stand the main characters.

Izzy is obviously a really bad person, and yes, call me conservative, sleeping around (especially when you have a loyal man you're cheating on) is considered a disgusting sin! And the fact that Jamie just accepts this because well 'friends accept friends for who they are and anyway Izzy is actually a good person, no one knows her like I do' is crazy. I was shortly happy when Scott confronted her about this friendship, but what good use came out of it really? They spoke the truth to each other while fighting then made peace and went on the same exact path again.
And oh save me from this 'Jamie is such a good person' propaganda. It's like watching Rory in Gilmore Girls (I love Gilmore Girls). Everyone in Las Vegas, her best friend and her mother and towards the end even good old Nadine seem to AdOre this pathetic excuse of a person, going on and on about how she's so sweet she's so brave. Ok, credits where it's due - she was brave to come all the way to Las Vegas and come out of her comfort zone and explore new things, but after this, every decision this girl makes is just stupid. And it's written as if she's the better one (in terms of morals) of the two. That's such bs,

she had a nice first love who is - excuse me - her sister's current fiancé and STILL manages to hold on to her feelings and hopes, she goes to Vegas and falls for the first stripper she sees and get this - in her mind, this is actual true love, the man of her dreams who she's gonna marry probably - and while the whole Zane has Mia story is running, our mc is already falling in love currently with a new guy - therapist/knight actor Scott, this is again her one true love (all the while CJ the first love is still love-ing) Scott turns out to be gay and hey! What do I do now! Give false hopes to the only great character in the story (aka Finn) AND almost sleep with my first love CJ who is believe it or not - Still engaged to my sister! And then finally, very conveniently, the fake marriage is broken (kudos to Miss Amazing for not feeling an ounce of embarrassment because in your mind you're actually the best human ever) AND all of a sudden a stripper manages to tell you how CJ came onto her and practically every other girl on sight. And just like that you're all bye bye CJ you little rat and feel all good about yourself finally. And then right then it's all childhood trauma and drama that turned first love into this cheating man and of course, your sister is the one who confesses this to you and you are disgusted and relieved even though you were about to help him cheat on your sister literally one morning ago - now she's all 'oh, poor Nadine' and doesn't even do shit about it just let's her be. And after all this chaotic mess, she runs along to Finn for her happily ever after. Shitty much?

Don't even get me started on her mother. For real. What even was that? Mama i get that you were caged for a long while, you didn't get to live your dreams. But this behavior was so uncalled for and absolutely lets me know exactly where Jamie gets her character from and why you love her better than Nadine. (I'm really not trying to support Nadine's awful behavior in most of the book, but honestly, I'd say she's the better of the two)

The other characters were not that bad.

The oh - so - appreciated humour was mostly bad.

And the British Superiority complex - please.

So after all this why give the book 2.3 stars even? Because Las Vegas was pretty cool. And i liked a lot of the places and it's descriptions. The author did a good job writing it in a way I could still clearly see it. And and and FINNN!!! I loved everything about Finn's character except for the part that loved Jamie. What did he even see, especially after everything else that happened, idk. He was clearly a last resort. Like it was so obvious throughout the book that dude was making a move every chance he got, he gave her special treatment, this idiot thought every man was head over heels for her (including a gay man) but didn't see what was so clear. I call bs on this one. It was so clear and she didn't do shit about it - and then the moment she knew Zane, Scott AND CJ were definitely out of the picture she suddenly goes all 'omg Finn - did he love me? Did I love him? Is that what this is? ' no you rat, you never even knew what love is, look at you hopping along and catching the safest prey. I hated the ending.

I loved Finn other than that. And would absolutely fall for a Finn. With the aquarium and the dolphins, the awkwardness and adventure, reliability and surprises. He's amazing. Sad how he had to end up with someone who couldn't appreciate it until all other options died.

YAHOO! This author drives me with an energy where I want to shriek with joy and slide my chicken legs across the floor, turning my house into a dance studio.
First of all, single and unhitched, I was totally able to relate to Jamie and Izzy's ‘taking control of your life’ motto as they travel to an unknown destination, adamant and convinced that they will return to the pavilion only after upgrading their marital status quo from Ms. to Mrs.
The book is a mix of characters, Izzy and Nadine being almost intolerable, but it elevates Jamie's virtuous side because of them. She has lots of ups and downs, meeting different people and traveling through different adventures (both externally and internally). The best quality about Jamie is she's so in the moment that she's easily distracted by her love for dolphins and curiosity of other things while the guys who mess with her mind or a friend who's overruling her life or a sister who's being nasty or the love of her life turning hot and cold, or her variations of feeling for different men she comes across, sits on the backburner as she rides her high. Nothing stops her from enjoying what's now - like the panoramic view of the mountains from high on top, from enjoying the sea world or developing friendships with no inhibitions or building castles in the air just for the heck of it. Jamie is the child we have forgotten in us, experiencing a moment to the heights and treasuring it as a memory while gliding through the pitfalls gracefully.
A huge shout out to the men in the book, especially Jamie's love interests - Christopher, Zane, and Finn. They are all different people, but the core value of them is similar. She's vulnerable and so are they.
If you want to know the divas below the thick skin, dive into the book. :)

I'm an unashamed Belinda Jones fan and thought it was high time I wrote a review of at least one of her books. Divas perfectly sums up the three things that I think define her writing: her love of travel; her sense of place (in this case Vegas); and an infectious joyousness. With this book she also manages to do something quite difficult, namely writing a non-fiction work that reads like a novel. If the purpose of reading is to make us happier, or wiser, or preferably both, then Ms Jones gets high marks for managing to add a spice of wisdom to a happy romp.

Just awful.

I don’t know if it just doesn’t translate now or what but this book was dreadful.

I wanted to give up reading it but I carried on just in case.

It just seemed a justification of why Jamie should steal her sisters fiancé. Trying to steal him makes you just as horrible.

I enjoyed it, but I agree with other readers in that it took about 1/3 of the book to get into the story. By the end I was rooting for both main characters. The description of Las Vegas was great!

But now I'm finished.
And thanks God for that:)
At the beginning it was really hard for me to get into this book, a few times I have thought that was for me, I can't read it any longer. I didn't understand what this book is about and what is going on, what with the retrospections, some additional "adventures" from the past or how should I call this. I really don't understand some bits of this book, they do not suit at all, what about the animals and writing for the papers, it doesn't make sense at all for me.
And the characters. Oh my... There are a lot of people "starring" in this book but it is actually about Jamie and Izzy being desperate to get married, married, married, doesn't matter who the groom to be is. When Jamie was from time to time more human, I just hated Izzy, her way to be,her reactions, her words, this how she was treating and using people.
All in all, respect to the writer for writing such a long book about desperately wanting to get married, about totally nothing, it was not funny, it didn't bring anything new or worth knowing to my life.

This was a fun read. I don't know when it was written, but I did like the "throw back' to what I guess is 2000? Maybe earlier, because of the Desert Inn Casino, & Aladdin nod, let alone "coin buckets". I did enjoy the fact that no one had cell phones in this book, imagine, meeting up with friends in Vegas without a cell? Oh, the horror!! haha! It was refreshing, to be honest ! The adventures the girls had, who they meet, how they end up, was enjoyable! What kept me from giving it 4 stars, was just how perfect everything was - yes, it's a book, and fiction, but every person they met was the kind of person you want to keep for life! HAHA, I mean, just 1 creepy uncle? One?? So maybe I'm being very hard/critical by not giving it 4 and enjoying it like I did. But I did enjoy it, it was fun, I just didn't have the "can't put it down" effect!

Firstly let me tell you that I have enjoyed all the previous Belinda Jones books I have read. I liked this one but only really got into it about 1/3rd of the way in and then wasn't madly in love with Izzy, the protagonist, Jamie's, best friend - hence only three stars.

Having said that, the descriptions of Vegas, the shows and the atmosphere of the town are all spot on. The location always plays a big part in each story and drawing a complete picture of the setting is one of the things Belinda Jones does really well in each of her books.

This was the first book she had published and it will not put me off picking up more of her work as she seems to get stronger as a writer as she progresses, if her other work is anything to go by.

I bought this book after enjoying The California Club by the same author, and as with that one, I enjoyed reading this. Belinda Jones writes in a similar style to Marian Keyes, whose books I also enjoy. This book made me laugh out loud in places. As with The California Club she does a great job of advertising the place in which it's set - I really wanted to go to Vegas after reading this. Another one where you don't have to think too much about it - perfect to chill out with. My only criticism is that it was slow on the uptake, however once it got going it was great.

When I started reading this book it was really hard going, quite a few times I was going to give up. At some points it made no sense at all and I was wondering whether it was worth the effort of carrying on with it. By the time I got about halfway through it started to get funny in parts and the story properly got going. I am so glad I carried on with it and didn't give up as I got really into the story and couldn't put it down until the end. I would say if anybody else reads this book to stick with it as it's worth it by the end.

Belinda Jones' first novel. What I like about her books is the fact that she sets them in different locations - I love imagining that I'm sitting somewhere hot and sunny, drinking out of coconut shells and relaxing on the beach.

Divas Las Vegas isn't my favourite Jones book, but it's still a fun read. The book features two best friends, Jamie and Izzy, who go to Vegas in search of true love (in Jamie's case, a toy boy, in Izzy's, an older sugar-daddy type). A funny, frothy read perfect for packing in your suitcase or even just your back garden on a sunny day.

It had a few good moments and some interesting characters but it didn't completely convince me.
The descriptions of Vegas, and especially the trips outside into nature were really great though - as I'm used to from Belinda Jones. She has this way of describing a place that makes you feel like you're actually right there along with the protagonist, discovering a city or country for the first time.

** I received this book free on Kindle app from BookBub.

This was a cute book and a quick read.

The book was about two girls from England who at the age of 27 decide to go to Las Vegas to find husbands. The story was engaging, but it bothered me when the Americans they met sounded like they were also from England. (one referring to his "mum" instead of "mom" like an American would and many British phrases.)

This book really started slowly and so the fact that it picked up at the end came as a surprise. It really improved as it went along.

Basically, this us a light beach read with quirky English characters who seem to get funnier as the book goes on. You know what is going to happen at the end, but you're not sure how the author is going to get there. But the fact that the last half is so much better than the first half makes this a decent read after all.
