“Short Stuff” by Jim Bates is a book of wonderfully heartwarming short stories. Jim ‘s words will touch you with joy, sorrow, love, loss, and every emotion there is. Each story will introduce you to characters that will become your friends, neighbors, and family.

I loved each and every story in this book. I could not pick a favorite, but will mention a few. In “Soap Bubbles” the warmth of a loving family allows an aging grandfather feel youthful and happy again. In “Pancakes” a young lad tries to make breakfast for his mother, who is going though a hard time. The story is so real-to-life, that you will believe it is happening to someone you know. “Fear of Snakes” shows the almost-humorous side of relationships, as one person tries their best to accept the quirkiness of another.

Each short read in this book is a look into the wonderfully creative mind of Jim Bates, and how he treasures stories surrounding human relationships. Since the stories are all between one and four pages long, you can pick the book up and put it down as you need to. But, believe me, you will not want to put this little gem down.

I have read much of Jim's work and even edited and published him. I did not read this volume, however, until after it was published. It did not disappoint. Jim present us with some finely drawn characters. He packs a lot of story into a few words and still retains his distinctive story-telling voice.

Bates paints a picture with words. These short stories which often take an unexpected turn or leaves the reader to imagine how they would continue, cover fantasy, myth and contemporary issues.
These stories are easy to dip into, are set in diverse locations and make you think.
While it is difficult to select a favourite story, Amaryllis was the one that resonated with me.
