I have been reading and praying this book with my church. We decided to read/pray this book during the last 50 days of 2020. While we should always be praying for the Holy Spirit's presence, in 2020 especially, we really needed to be praying for His presence and for the revival of the church.
I am giving this book 4 stars because of a lack of direction from the author in how to use the spaces in the book. Hopefully this review will help subsequent readers.
The format of this book is such that there are ten chapters of the book of Acts that the author focuses on. You pray through each chapter five times over the course of the 50 days. I would highly recommend going through the book and writing the dates you will be reading a particular chapter on the first page of each of the ten"Day" chapters. For example, we started reading/praying Day 1 on November 12 and then read it again on November 22, December 2, December 12, and December 22. This helped me to stay on track after the first read-through.
There is a lot of blank space for you to write your own prayers. Some people in my church group were unsure of what to write. I chose to turn the author's admonitions to pray for "xyz" into my prayer if I was not inspired to write a prayer of my own.
There are pages for you to write down how God is working and answering the prayers that have been prayed. Some in our church group were concerned that they would not be able to fill those pages out right away. That is okay. I think the beauty of those pages is that as the days of prayer progress, the reader/pray-er will be able to fill in some of those pages. And maybe in a few months time, you take the book out again and see what God has been doing through the Holy Spirit.
On Day 8, the author asks you to rebuke in Jesus' name the persecution of Christians in certain countries, but there are no countries listed since this can change over the course of time. I googled "world watch list 2020" and found a list of the top 100 countries that persecute Christians at operationworld.org There are even prayer prompts for each country if you are inclined to pray for particular countries.
Personally, I saw the Holy Spirit answer several prayers that I prayed, and I was able to witness to my church group where I had seen Him at work. In turn, they shared where they were seeing God at work. This strengthened and edified us during this roller coaster of a year that has been marked by a global pandemic, outrage against racism, and a president who offends some and pleases others.
I think this book is wonderful for a group to work through together. Our group had a Zoom call once each week to talk about our insights, our prayers, and how we saw The Holy Spirit at work. We definitely feel closer to each other and to the Holy Spirit as a result of this book. Praise God!
Stimulating thoughts on how to continue as the early church, in seeking to come alongside of the Holy Spirit's empowering and moving in our churches and communities.
