I had this book when I was a kid, it was fantastic, it went from the big bang right up to the rise of Man, had some awesome pictures, including some cavemen killing wooly mammoths by driving them into pits and then chucking rocks on them.
I was heavily into dinosaurs when I was a little kid (about 6 or 7) like many little kids at that age and read all of the dinosaur books at my school library I could get my hands on.
I vow to own this in hardcover again one day!

Dit is het boek dat mij als vierjarige een belangstelling voor paleontologie bijbracht die nooit meer is weggegaan. Het boek bestaat uit twee delen: blz. 7-47 bestaat uit puur tekst met hier en daar een zwartwitillustratie, maar dán: vanaf blz. 50 is het boek gevuld met de indrukwekkende olieverfschilderijen van Zdeněk Burian, samen met Charles Knight de grootste paleoartiest van de 20ste eeuw. Burians werk is uitzonderlijk virtuoos en realistisch. Zijn schilderijen zuigen je gewoon de voorbije werelden in; vooral zijn landschappen zijn wat dat betreft fantastisch.
De schilderijen stammen uit de jaren dertig t/m zestig en hier en daar zijn Burians reconstructies behoorlijk achterhaald. Vooral het Mesozoïcum komt er slecht van af: Burians dinosauriërs, plesiosauriërs en mosasauriërs stammen echt uit een ander tijdperk, waarin dino's nog als domme, slome monsters werden gezien. Burians Paleozoïsche en Cenozoïsche fauna heeft de tand des tijds over het algemeen veel beter doorstaan. Hier zie je dieren waarvan je meteen gelooft dat ze bestaan hebben. Vooral de uitgestorven neushoorns en olifanten zien er prachtig uit, maar mijn favoriete plaat is die van twee Scutosauriërs en een Sauroctonus uit het Perm. Ook nu nog blijft het een boek om in weg te dromen naar lang, lang vervlogen tijden...

4 stars not so much because of the writing. It's the pictures that makes this book worthwhile.

Menemukan buku ini pada area buku seken. Tp isinya penuh dengan ilustrasi yang menawan. Ada 162 ilustrasi berwarna yg memanjakan pembaca.
Buku ini akan memudahkan anak2 dan remaja mempelajari ttg kehidupan di masa lalu. Cocok dijadikan koleksi bagi penggemar kehidupan zaman lampau.

four stars for the nostalgic retro paleoart of Zdenek Burian, it brings to me so many old beautiful memories. And while it's totally outdated, it's beautiful as art, there is something unique about his art that takes me to a different time and place!
As for the text, didn't read it anyway, because it's so outdated and mostly useless today unless you want to take a peek at how paleontology was back then (1940s-1950s).

My mother bought me this after a museum trip when I was young (it is the 1972 version) - and I don't think we had the money to afford it, so I was (and still am) so appreciative. It was for many years my favourite book, and it is a nice production with lovely illustrations. Obviously, the science has moved on, and so it is only a snapshot of what they thought then, bt this will never leave the collecton.

Velice pěkná kniha, která vypráví o pravěku tak, jako by byl dnes. Je doplněná výbornými ilustracemi.
