This was somehow not at all what I expected the second book in this series to be, and I really loved that about it— this version of Hell was not what I anticipated at all, in really interesting ways. There’s such a fascinating blend of genres at work, and the novel incorporates fantasy, mythology, dystopian social and political structures, magic, and, of course, the fraught romance between Conall and Mark. I liked, very much, both the author’s prose style and story telling abilities, and while the first book was interesting, this one I found impossible to put down. It’s great when a series gets stronger like that, and I’d strongly recommend this installment.

I received an ARC of this book. I thoroughly enjoyed this second installment of The Fallen series, Fallen Desire by Alex Stargazer. This story has a bit of everything in it: Sci Fi, Fantasy, Romance, Dystopian Future, Paranormal, Hell, Demons, Mutants, Magic, Swords, Dragons, Politics, Villians... and a super hot young gay hero couple! This book is full of likeable characters, deadly battles, interesting power sets, a unique Hellscape, adults only love scenes and winged killer heros. While this isn't Gaiman, Tolkien or Martin level yet, this also isn't your average everyday read and is definitely worth checking out. This young writer's work gets better with each new book and I look forward to reading what's next.

In book one, we got the dystopian world that Conall and Mark have to try to survive in. Here, we get to see an even more amazing world the author takes us to - Hell. Again, Conall and Mark are struggling to defeat the evil ones and be together but they battle separately through much of this story and we get to know them better as the strong individuals they are. That makes it even more rewarding when the come together and get their HEA. An author who has quickly become a favorite.

The story of Mark and Conall continues as Mark is stuck in Hell keeping his bargain with Lucifer and Conall is with those trying to overthrow the government of Ireland. I still like the two main characters but Kaylin still gets on my nerves. She definitely has her own agenda and while she cares about the others, they are merely a means to an end. We have a few more POVs in this book but Mark and Conall are the main ones. It is a good book and worth reading at least once. I followed this book a little better than the first one. The end is slightly bittersweet.

This book is almost 400 pages of intricate world building, adventure, fantasy and philosophising. I'm sure a lot of people will respond well to the epic adventure style, but I found it difficult to engage with in any meaningful way.

Many of the character interactions lack depth, are vaguely motivated and feel forced, as if included purely to propel the plot forward. The relationships between the characters lack genuine feeling, often falling in love over the course of a 5 minute interaction, and wavering at the first sign of trouble.

Because of this, it was a struggle for me to maintain my interest in the action, no matter how intriguing the premise or complex the world building.

I received a copy of this book from Gay Romance Reviews and I have chosen to leave an honest review.

Wow! This book is the very exciting sequel to Fallen Love. It's imperative you read this after the first book. This book continues Conall and Mark's story though they are separated most of the book. I like seeing how the whole story unfolds and ultimately gives Conall and Mark their happy ending. The cast of characters and the world building are amazing. If you like supernatural beings, I think you'll enjoy this series.

I was definitely not expecting this!

I was blown away by the way the author has portrayed Lucifer.

I don't want to give away much of the plot, but I definitely loved this wicked, twisted paranormal romance!

A definite recommend

This conclusion to Mark and Conall's journey was epic in a way I wasn't expecting. I can't believe how much action was packed into this book, and I'm going to have a serious book hangover while I process how everything played out. Compared to the last book, this one was much less about Mark and Conall's romance and more about stopping Lucifer's threat to all of humanity. Mark, Conall, and Kaylin were actually on separate missions for the majority of the story, and I'm really impressed by the way this author managed to weave the separate plotlines together into a satisfying narrative.

It was fascinating to explore what Mark experienced in Hell--the political drama, unexpected allies, and dangerous enemies kept me on my toes and I never knew who I could trust. I was intrigued by the little details surrounding Lucifer and his creations, mostly because they were full of so many contradictions. At times, Lucifer was almost a sympathetic character, but then he'd do something terrible to remind me why he wasn't redeemable after all. More than Lucifer himself, it was the imps, humans, and demons that really captured my attention. Whether it was a dramatic revenge plot, bonding moment, or opportunity to power up, Mark didn't shy away from any challenge. I didn't expect Mark to have any support structure in Hell, but much to my delight he wasn't the only one who wanted to take Lucifer out.

In parallel to Mark's journey, Conall and Kaylin faced their own set of terrifying threats. For Conall, the struggle centered around how to keep himself and his family safe amidst the destruction of the Party, but for Kaylin it was about exploring her true power as a witch. I was equally captivated by all the main characters, but I have to admit it was particularly cool to see the things Kaylin was capable of. What made this story so exciting to me was the way I could never really anticipate what was coming next. Sure, I could sense that all the action was building to a climactic final battle, but every little twist and turn was a tiny mystery to unravel. It was viscerally satisfying to see Mark, Conall, and Kaylin's team take down the threat, and even though I didn't see much of what the post-war restorations looked like I can rest easy knowing that Mark and Conall found peace together.

**I voluntarily read an ARC of this book. This review expresses my honest thoughts and opinions.

Mark is now with Lucifer but determined to return to Conall. To do that he needs help but who can he trust? He knows Lucifer has eyes and ears everywhere. He is also extremely powerful but Mark is finding he has his own power which he has been exploring with the help of some of the various residents. Conall and his allies have been busy doing their own part to help but contact with Mark is more than difficult.

Alex Stargazer has created an amazingly complex world filled with angels and demons, as well as magic and mutations. This is the second book but can be easily read without reading the first as there are more than enough hints to keep you informed. Mark has grown and changed but so has Conall. One thing that has not changed is their love for each other. There are some sad losses and some unexpected gains but that happens in war. Staying one step ahead is difficult if not impossible at times. How do they succeed? You will have to pick up this excellent story and find out. You will be glad you did. Just remember, you will not want to put it down.

Occasionally a second book in a series isn’t as good, this one is not one of those. This was phenomenal, just as good if not better than the first! The paranormal fantasy and mythology in the world building were sooo freakin good! Conall and Mark continue to struggle to defeat evil. Brilliant beginning to end! This was a fantastic page turner! Overall, the story was fantastic, kept me glued to the pages! The story was well written with a group of fantastic secondary characters. Highly recommend! I’m voluntarily reviewing from an advanced copy that I received. My reviews are solely based on my thoughts and opinions.

This story is absolutely amazing! Alex Stargazer is so creative, and he has envisioned a fascinating world. The conception of hell and its denizens, including Lucifer, was captivating, interesting, and surprising. Like the first book, this one has a lot of twists and turns, and multiple POVs...and action. So much going on from different angles as MCs Conall, Mark, and Kaylin follow their separate paths. I was definitely not disappointed by how everything came together in the end. Do Conall and Mark find their way back to each other? You'll have to read it to find out.

Fallen Desire has such interesting and intricate world building and I enjoyed it much more than the first book. Mark and Conall spend a large chunk of this book not together but their character growth is exponential. There is a large cast of characters to enjoy and lots of twists and turns to follow along with.

I really enjoyed the books in this series. I did find myself getting a little bored through some of the second book, but it was fantastic all the same. I honestly wasn’t expecting anything that happened in this book!

Alex Stargazer has stepped up his game, with Fallen Desire. And I couldn’t be happier. The foundation he spent time on in the first book has paid off, for he has started the story’s continuation at a sprint. Because stories have so many elements to them, I feel it’s only fair to break down my review into four categories: Plot, Prose, Character Development, and Originality. Overall, Fallen Desire deserves 5 out of 5 stars.

• Plot 5/5
The story begins in Hell, a Citadel with many bridges, a lake of fire, and places no demon dares to tread, for Lucifer has forbidden certain parts of it from ever being visited. The rumor is a dragon lurks there. It’s up to Mark to find the devil’s weakness. Does Lucifer even have one? Mark often wonders this very thing. He meets imps, demons, and banished humans, including several of Lucifer’s favorites. If only he could turn one, and get him . . . or her, to join his side. Mark has quite the task ahead.

Then there’s Conall, on the run from the Party, wondering if he’ll ever see Mark again. He’s along for the ride, facing the repercussions of a political figure’s death in book 1. He takes it upon himself to see that Mark’s uncle is safe. Much of Conall’s ‘screen time’ is action-packed. He’s definitely had to grow up a bit, realizing that he, though more fragile than a demon, has an important part to play in bringing down Lucifer.

Kaylin’s still a powerhouse. A witch, determined to improve herself. How else could she hope to go toe to toe with the devil, and win? She couldn’t, really. So, with her book of mysterious origin in hand, she leaves her position as the leader of a rebellion for a time. She goes to a place of magic. Mount Everest. Someone has been waiting there expectantly for her. Through a series of events, Kaylin’s introduced to more books of magic. The keeper of the books might perhaps have an answer of how to defeat the devil.

• Prose/Style & Grammar 4/5
I swear, this author wrote another book in between Fallen Love and its sequel: Fallen Desire. He has grown so much, as a writer. His descriptions transported me to the pit of Hell; to the fiery lake there, frozen over for a time of demons to duel with each other. The dialogue flowed even more naturally than in book 1, and allowed the characters to take the stage. There’s much wit and sarcasm, even amidst tough times. It’s one of the things I love about Alex’s writing style.

The reason for the docked star, here, has to do with some repetitious phrases. Each author has certain things they tend to overuse. Alex is no exception. It wasn’t terribly distracting. In fact, I really, really wanted to give five stars here, as well, but I can’t give a rating of perfection, when there were some things that occasionally broke the flow of the story.

• Character Development 5/5
The characters leap off the page, and steal your heart, especially Mark, Conall, and Kaylin. They are deeper than they were in Fallen Love. They more clearly know what they’re after, and they’re fighting desperately to get it. But will they succeed? What sacrifices must they make to claim victory? Will the devil, Lucifer, prove to be the wicked demon all believe him to be, or will he prove to be something else . . . something unexpected? Reading about these characters, and watching them grow, as they battle through every hurdle thrown at them is nothing short of thrilling.

I’m happy to say that the supporting cast, including several new faces, did their part in bringing the story to life. Many things are wrapped up nice and neat, though not without losses and tragedy along the way. Fallen Desire has all the pieces of an epic story.

On a side note, this book contains language and some sex scenes, though not as much as what the first book had, yet the sex scenes are just . . . more. If you read this sequel, you’ll know what I mean. The dark themes from book 1 continue on, to create realism within the story. As I said in my review of Fallen Love, please don’t let your immature thirteen-year-old read this book.

• Originality 5/5
Alex fought hard to keep that original spark going, I can tell. And good news! He succeeded. Truly, Fallen Desire paints the devil, Lucifer, in a whole new way. I wasn’t expecting the story to take the turn that it did. For the briefest of moments, I was even rooting for the devil. Does that make me wicked? Perhaps. I love it when authors take the time to make their antagonists relatable. It makes for a better story, in my opinion.

The complexity, the mystery, the world-building, all of it is tantalizing. An even blend of Sci-fi meets Fantasy. It’s the sort of story you want to read within a day, yet wish to savor by taking your time to read through more slowly. Take a break from life, and escape to the world of Fallen Love and Fallen Desire. For me, there are no regrets.

I was given an ARC (advanced reader copy) with no expectation that I leave a review. I've already pre-ordered the paperback via Alex's Kickstarter for Fallen Desire. Join in, and let's make this sequel to Fallen Love a shining success. :D

From his first successful Kickstarter, teen author Alex Stargazer is back with another installment of the Fallen series. If you’re a fan of Cassandra Clare or Lauren Kate, you don’t want to miss this!
Total Score: 5/5

Summary:
Conall and Mark came from different worlds, Conall was of a privileged rank where Mark was part of the Fallen (the lowest cast of their society), but that didn’t matter when they fell in love. Their world changed forever when Mark had to make a choice agree to go to hell with Lucifer or watch Conall hurt or killed. Mark is determined to overcome anything that stands in his way, but there are many surprises in store for him. Hell is not exactly what he expected leaving him wondering who he can trust. There are many different levels to Lucifer making Mark wonder who he really is, but after all of that the devil is still the devil.

Now on Earth the conflict between the Communists and Big Brother is getting out of control forcing Conall and his family to go on the run. The majority of humanity are taking sides without realizing who the real enemy is. Lucifer is determined to use Mark to get free from Hell and finally get his revenge.

This was a fascinating intricate story filled to mythical and magical twists that keep the reader waiting to see what happens next. The love between Mark and Conall is put to the test as their lives go separate ways forcing them to trust that they will overcome their adversities. I hope that their story isn’t over yet!
