I was rolling along, happily reading this book, totally invested …. then the plot twist hit. 🫨 What in the what? I was SO confused, had to read the chapter twice because I wasn’t sure if what I was reading was correct 😅. This book had all the potential feels for me, it’s unfortunate the twist killed the vibe. It felt forced, rushed, and just a bit unbelievable.
3.5 ⭐️ rounded up for the book pre twist. The twist was out of the blue and simply not believable. The first larger part of the book was so much better.
Holyyyy it’s been a while since a book has completely blown by mind and left me pretty speechless.
If you saw my post yesterday, I quickly got invested in this book and the fact that barely 24 hours later, I have my review up so that clearly shows you how much I loved it. Riley and Jesse had a quick/sweet meeting before both of their worlds blow up. An accident that destroyed both of their families and changes the dynamic of their relationship.
Five months later, Riley transfers to Lakeview high after years of being home schooled due to her grueling skating schedule and comes face to face with the boy that made her heart race. Gone was the sweet smile and left in it’s place is just a hateful glare. In that moment Jesse vows to break her in any way that he can.
I honestly wanted to wrap my arms around both characters because of all the gut wrenching moments that they have to face. You see them both fighting against the deniable chemistry that they have towards each other.
That unique twist… I did not see coming and it had me confused, yelling and holding my kindle a little tighter as I tried to read faster and understand what I was reading. It really made me appreciate the story for what it was and immediately tell everyone I know to slap this on their TBR.
Trust me when I say that if you enjoy any of the tropes listed above with an angsty but pretty satisfying ending
I absolutely loved this book! It is forbidden love & enemies to lovers at its’ finest! What if the thing that connects you to someone on a deeper level is also the thing that tears you apart? I felt so much for what both Riley and Jesse were going through. Throw in a plot twist I did not expect, plus the perfect amount of steam, and you get a smashing hit in my books.
Hercules is a must read author for me! I love all her books and the fact that she surprises me every single time! Break You Hard had the biggest surprise of them all and is a 2023 must read!
Riley and Jesse’s story really walks along the thin line of love and hate! From the first time they met things were heated and as the book goes on that heat morphs into many things!
Be prepared to fall hard for these two and to also be ready for the twists because this story packs the emotional punches! One of my favorites by this author!
This was a all night binge read for me ! I don’t get completely blindsided by plot twists for most books I read, and I read a looooooot but this one I didn’t expect!
These are two high school students. Kids. Children. Reading spice involving children should come with a bloody warning. Definitely not what I expected to be reading and yup…immediately closed this one down as soon as he graphically took a piece of her anatomy into his mouth. No. Just. No.
A very engaging book. I did not appreciate the 'twist', it was too gimmicky. The story was so good it did not need it. It took away rather than added to the story. If 'part' of this book wasn't so good I would have given less stars. If there was no 'twist' it was a five star book. .
This book was a ride! There is telenovela amounts of drama! Comas, seizures, deaths and so much more! It was over the top…and I couldn’t put it down. I tore through this SO quick! The chapters were so short that I ripped through them in less than a day!
The twist wasn’t the most original, and the ‘skating’ aspect fell WAY to the sidelines! But, the story was engaging and quick! If you’re in the market for an angsty little pick-me-up, then this is your book!
I don’t think I would reread, but I honestly really liked this book and would read more from this author in the future! 😊

I kid you the fuck not. The book was already a bit cheesy with instalove, kind of juvenile (the writing, plot, etc) and just very dramatic and then a dumb fucking plot twist happened. What a crock of shit. I had to read like 3 chapters over and over again, wondering what the fuck did I miss and nope I read it right. It was the worst fucking execution of a plot twist. Just goddamn terrible for depriving the world of toilet paper.
This book sat in my KU since April 1, 2023 so I can't even fucking tell you why I read it.
I cannot even put into words at how amazing this book was! I went in blind and knew very little about it except that it was a Hockey Romance. It was so much more with a plot twist I didn't see coming from a million miles away.
Riley is an Ice skater and Jesse is the hot hockey player. They meet briefly in the beginning of the book it was short and sweet. Shortly after, their lives both blow up and leave them intertwined for the rest of their lives. Their relationship was forever changed.
A few months later Riley is transferred to Jesse's school after years of being home schooled because skating was her life. That sweet boy she met months ago is gone. In his place is a cold-hearted guy who vows to break her in every way possible. Riley and Jesse both fight an undeniable chemistry that eventually implodes in the best way. Michelle did an amazing job making me feel all these emotions! This wasn't a typical girl falls for boy, boy falls for girl romance and for that I am truly grateful. We get to watch these to have ups and downs and eventually fight for what they want.
The plot twist in this book is MIND BLOWING in epic proportions! I still can't believe it! I didn't see it coming at ALL!
If you're looking for an easy love story this, isn't it, but you will find that in time they both come to love each other. This will forever be a book that I wish I could reread for the 1st time!! I hope that you come to love Jesse and Riley just as much as I did!
Please check your Triggers there are a few here. <3
5/5 for the story as a whole 4/5 for the spice (The spice was great and well written just wanted more of it!)
I was LOVING this book until that plot twist was revealed. Like what the hell?!!?!?!?!?!??
Lemme tell you what happens. The girl meets the main guy at an event. Instant attraction. Same day the girl gets in an accident with her father who was drunk driving and another person dies who happens to me the main guys mother. After that the girl stays in coma for a few days and wakes up and starts to attend the guy’s school and enemies to lovers after that. They get together. There are sneaking around scenes bc the guy’s father hates the girl bc of her father killing his wife. So they are sneaking around… and then comes the plot twist. ACTUALLY NONE OF THOSE HAPPENED BC THE GIRL WAS IN A COMA THE WHOLE TIME. SHE WAS IN A COMA FOR 5 MONTHS. All those things happed inside her head when she was in a coma and the boy was just visiting her and telling her stories while she was in a coma. So she woke up and the guy is like “I love her” and she is like “I love him” After that it was just insta-love bc they can just feel they are right for each other(?????). Honestly. You can just cut the book from the time the accident happens and to that chapter it is revealed that she was in a coma all those times and it would have been better. All those scenes between those two mean nothing. I’m angry at this book. It could have been a 4 stars read but it got 1 from me. I HATE IT HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This book left me torn. I am a huge Michelle Hercules fan and I love hockey romances. But this book fell kind of flat for me. Break You Hard is the story of Jesse and Riley. I was loving the book up until the "transition" (my term to avoid a spoiler). This transition felt forced and really odd. I get that it was supposed to be a surprise for the reader, but it didn't work for me. I felt like the author wrote the story one way and decided she didn't like the way it was progressing and threw in this curveball at the end. It left me with questions and was not believable. I also felt the ending was rushed. Maybe I was biased about this book from the beginning because I hate the figure skater/hockey trope in hockey romances. It's overplayed. That being said, I will still keep reading this series.
“Stunning is the only word I can use to describe her.“
This book is going to rattle around in my brain for the rest of time because I DON’T KNOW HOW SHE DID IT
Anywhoo, Michelle said she had never written anything like this before and you should believe her
Overall, Break You Hard is a love story in its truest and purest form. When life puts two people together, sometimes they just know.
“He’s not a wall, he’s an iceberg that’s going to sink me like the Titanic.”
Outside forces will work against them, but if they stay true to who they are and what they believe in, they will come together.
“Babe, I’m here. I’m here.“
Riley and Jesse are those two people. Riley is a figure skater of the highest order. She’s homeschooled instead of high school because her performance goals are top priority for her schedule. She is strong, independent, and sweet. She has all the innocence and ambition you would expect.
But something happens that changes everything.
Jesse is the hockey star of our dreams. He knows he’s good looking and how to work a room. But at his core he is a loving son, a good brother, and a best friend. When he loves you, it’s with everything he has.
But when he should hate you…
For fans of coming-of-age love, hockey romance, and steamy reads…
Holy hell, this book! I'm so glad I went into this story blind because I really was not expecting the heartbreak or that plot twist. On the surface, BREAK YOU HARD appears to be your typical rom-com hockey romance, but once you dive in, you discover that there is so much more to the story. Riley and Jesse first meet at a figure skating competition, but both of their lives are forever linked and inexorably changed after a tragedy that affects both of their families. At first, there is plenty of animosity, rage, and guilt between them, but as the story progresses, Jesse is able to look past his anger and see Riley for who she really is. I loved their slow-burn but irresistible romance, but that unbelievable twist at the end completely changed the entire story!! Absolutely brilliant novel, and I highly recommend🖤
Tropes: bully romance, hate-to-love-you, tortured hero, heroine-in-distress, enemies-to-lovers, hockey romance, forbidden love, hockey player/figure skater, PLOT TWIST you don't see coming, slow burn, STEAMY🔥
If you go into this thinking it’s a bully/enemies to lovers story, you will be disappointed. You will probably be disappointed from chapter 46 on honestly. I’m all for plot twists, but this one just wasn’t it. The entire story is discredited by this.
Riley is a figure skater and Jesse is a hockey player. One night after they meet, Riley gets into the car with her dad and quickly realizes he’s drunk and tells him to turn the car around, which he does after yelling and he ends up hitting and killing jesses mom.
Riley is forced to live with her aunt who lives in the same small town as Jesse and everyone rallies around him and hates Riley.
Jesse starts out hating Riley and threatens her but never actually does anything about it. Then they start to fall for each other. It was pretty cute, medium burn, low spice stuff. Until chapter freaking 46 and everything changes. I’m not gonna spoil it, but unfortunately it ruined the story for me. Read it and be the judge yourself 🤷🏻♀️
Oh my goodness! I know Ms. Hercules could do well in great contemporary stories as I have read her stuff in both contemporary and paranormal stories. Loved both genres so trust me you are up for a treat! This is a story of enemies lovers kind of relationship, so it's the one that I enjoy and tries to read most often. Riley and Jesse met briefly, I can even say by accident on an ice rink. Now they are like the worst people for each other and I appreciated that even with everything going on it did not cross the line of good taste (while reading you will understand). And what more can I say - While reading I almost screamed and work for my family (or even a building as it would be LOUD) due to the twist that I was not expecting, but this is what you get while reading a book from a really good author!
I was absolutely not prepared for this book. My head is spinning with how the whole story shook out. Wow. I don’t even know how to feel about Jesse with that twist. He was so broody and that perfect hockey alpha hole that even at his darkest you couldn’t help but love him. Riley is feisty and is just made of steel. She takes every single terrible thing he does and dishes it right back. There is definitely bullying and some really tough topics touched on especially loss but I think this whole story is more about grief and forgiveness rather than the bully romance aspect. We got to read both of these characters work through their trauma and grief towards a brighter path.
Did Michelle Hercules just f*ck with my head? Yes. Yes, she did.
Jesse and Riley had a short meet cute at a figure skating charity event where Riley and Jesse's sister were performing. As short as the meet cute was, that meeting left a lasting impression on both of them. Then, an accident that same night shattered both their worlds.
When Riley shows up at Jesse's high school months later, he does nothing to hide his disdain for Riley and Riley can't even blame him. The tension between them is sizzling. Jesse is torn between his hate and attraction, and damn if that didn't make things hotter between them.
And then that twist! That twist totally slapped me over the head and said "psyche." I definitely did not see it coming and I thought "WTF, did I miss something? Is my book missing a page?" The twist added an extra layer to the story. In my opinion, it wasn't just an enemies to lovers, it was also a story about the power of love and forgiveness, and how these can transcend anything.
Break You Hard is an enemies to lovers story and so much more. This is the story of Riley and Jesse. They meet briefly at a charity event and their first impression of each other left a lasting mark. However timing was not on their side as a horrific accident shatters both their worlds. Months later Riley shows up at Jesse's high school. He does nothing to hide his disdain for Riley and Riley can't even blame him as her guilt rests on her shoulders and in her heart. The tension between them is electric. And then you get totally slapped in the face with a twist that I definitely did not see coming. I thought I missed something and that there were pages missing. This definitely added more depth to their story. Fantastic book and can't wait to see what Michelle comes out with next!
The book hangover I’m currently experiencing after finishing this book is intense.
With one of the biggest blindsides I’ve ever experienced for a plot twist this book broke me hard 😏🤭 Dealing with grief is never easy but having the source or a reminder of it slapping you in the face over and over is a whole other story. One that Michelle executed beautifully. Jessie carries so much anger and misplaced resentment towards Reily that it’s no wonder they started out as enemies. But love always prevails and the heartwarming story of these two overcoming extreme circumstances is one I intend to read over and over again.
3/4 into this book and I was happily on the way to a top tier read and then the plot twist dropped and left me feeling disappointed. Break You Hard had some serious Romeo & Juliet vibes going with the forbidden romance. I was loving it, anxiously awaiting the HEA and then spent 3 chapters thoroughly confused wondering if there was a printing error and I was reading the last half of a different book.
I have nothing against a plot twist or books that keep me guessing but this one pushed me off a cliff and the transition was so abrupt I wasn't even sure what was happening and had to reread pages.
I am sure this is someone else's jamb but it was not mine.
I was not at all prepared for the turn this story took, but rest assured it has a HEA.
Jesse and Riley’s story is amazing! He’s a hockey player and she’s an Olympic bound figure skater. I just love Riley, she’s got an amazing soul, but she’s a spitfire too.
Jesse is instantly enamored with Riley when he sees her helping his sister skate through her panic. And then things take a turn when their worlds collide again.
This definitely different from Michelle’s other books. It’s an absolutely brilliant story! Loved it, just go in blind and enjoy!
Right from the beginning I wasn't fully vibing with this book. The writing wasn't great, the plot was slightly messy, it honestly read like a 14 year olds first book on Wattpad. However I pushed through cause there were some interesting aspects and I didn't hate the characters. But that plot twist completely tanked the book for me. It was confusing, it came out of nowhere, and it just didn't make sense with the plot of the book at all. After that the ending felt rushed and thoughtless. The characters seemed to lose all depth. It honestly felt thrown together and not planned at all.
I am the biggest fan of Michelle Hercules. She makes reading easy. Jesse and Riley’s story makes my heart flutter. For a short period towards the beginning, I wanted to cry for their losses, then I wanted to hit them for their stubbornness, and in the end, I loved right along with them. I couldn’t get enough and cannot wait to get glimpses of them in the future! A must read!!
At 85% when it switched to rylie being in a coma for 5 months, that was extremely confusing and i ended up not finishing it after 90%. It was stupid. Why have all that story then reverse it and have it all fake but not even work up to the fact that she was still in a coma when in the beginning it said she was already out of the coma? that was stupid
Absolutely fell in love with the characters in this book and was hooked from the start then the shocker which was still a fab end to a story but you would never guess all the time your reading this book. First one I've read from this author and I was not disappointed at all can't wait to try another.
I love Michelle's books and binged all of them to the point of having a book hangover. I feel bad for even saying this, I couldn't get into this one. A few things in this book felt rushed or forced. Also, it felt weird when you don't know how old they are (unless I missed it) and then you're reading about kids.... it made me a little uncomfortable. (If that makes sense...)
