An avid reader all my life and an aspiring writer since the age of ten, I realized my dream of becoming a published author in 2005. Inspired by the romance novels I devoured as a teen and the science fiction classics, I wanted to combine those elements into my stories. Since beginning my career, I've branched out from science fiction romance into paranormal, contemporary and even historical genres and I hope to continue bringing sexy adventurous tales to my readers for decades to come.

I currently live in the NY-NJ Metropolitan area with my husband of seventeen years, two creative children, a slightly neurotic Dalmatian and two spirited black cats. When not hard at work on a novel or short story, I spend my time reading, quilting and haunting the local craft stores.

Fresh Blood is a short story I got because I saw the cover and saw vampires. That is all it took. I had no idea what this was about. But I am happy my ignorance has worked in my favor. This was a pretty good book, a little over 100 pages, and best of all, it is FREE. But I would have gladly paid full price for this.

Fresh Blood is about a woman named Erica who is out on the town. But she isn’t out to have fun; she is out to find her sister, her twin, Elena. Erica is scared for her sister because even though Elena is always doing things she is not supposed to, this time she was in real trouble. So while Erica is out at a vampire bar (yes, they know they exist), she sticks out like a sore thumb. That is how she meets an investigator (and vampire) named Maxwell Hart. He knows by the looks of Erica, she will get herself killed the way she is going. So he offers to help her.

I will have to tread very carefully with this because one slip, I could give away a twist and there were a few. Nonetheless, this was a really great read. I love that Max took the time out to help Erica because considering the places she had to go, she would have been someone’s dinner (or dessert). He showed Erica the ropes and how dominant he is supposed to be. I loved that when we see what happens when Erica misbehaves, it was hot as hell.

I love the plot of the story. Had a couple of “Holy shit, that didn’t just happen” moments. Colgan is amazing with pace and tension. There was a lot of suspense and it really kept me in the world she created.

Something I didn’t like however was that we don’t get enough backstory from our characters. I mean I have a feel for Erica. She is so devoted to her sister and trying to save her (all the time). We know that she is quite conservative, but we don’t know more than that really. But it is worse with Max. He is a vampire and he mentions in a sentence of what happened to him and that was it. One thing I love about vampire stories is there history. I like knowing how they came to be and we don’t get that. We know that he misses being human and all, but I just would have liked more history.

Also something I wasn’t a fan of was the villain. With everything that happened, when we get to the villain, it wasn’t as big as I wanted it to be. I didn’t even find him as interesting as I did his concubine because she did most of the work really. The way things ended though was pretty good, so I wasn’t disappointed, but that was because of the surprise mostly.

Overall, this was pretty good. I went into this blind and came out a fan. This was a really good book. Couldn’t believe this was free. This book had a lot of suspense, twists, and turns. It really kept me on the edge of my seat and it was pretty hot. If you are looking for a pretty exciting paranormal romance, I think this is a pretty good choice. Also this isn't necessarily a series, but be sure to get part 2 following Max's friend Lucas, La Vida Muerta

Erica Talbot is looking for her missing twin sister who has disappeared into the world of vampire feeders. A world alien to her. After receiving a mysterous call for help from her sister Elana, Erica puts her fear of the unknown aside and takes on the hunt.

Vampire Detective Max Hart comes into Erica's life in time to save her from the perils of his world and to help her in her search. The attraction is instant for both parties making the search a little more dangerous for both of them. In order to move freely amongst the vampire world, Erica must follow Max's rules and play the role of a feeder. Suffice to say, she has some problems with her script. Max finds himself wanting to keep Erica in his life but knows she doesn't belong.

This is a very steamy journey with a solid mystery at it's heart. I liked Erica and Max right away and hoped for an HEA for them. For a novella, the story felt complete. I don't know that I am interested in reading the next book as it is about the missing sister. I would, however, read Ms. Colgan's work again. She did an amazing job with such a short story. I can only imagine what she could do with a full length novel.

**Free Read**

Erica is searching for her sister Elena and is checking a vampire bar when she meets Maxwell Hart, vampire investigator.

I’m a vampire fan and bought this the moment I read the blurb. Was I disappointed? Um, hell no. Let me tell you after reading this I’m going to search for other novels by Ms. Colgan.

She has a few witty one liners that really worked and her description of Maxwell practically made me drool. How can I possibly describe the intense sexuality between Max and Erica. It heats the very air as you read and then they enter the erotic world of the vampire.

Ms. Colgan does such a wonderful job of writing the scene and the tension between those two. I couldn’t stop reading and found myself leaning closer to the screen. This was an excellent read and I highly recommend it for those who like vampires to give it a try. For those who don’t...go suck on the sun! (wink).

You know, it's been a while since I've read a good Vampire book that actually had a plot - I really enjoyed this one :)

Erica is getting tired of following her twin sister around saving her from drugs and alcohol abuse, men, and trouble from every angle she looks.

But when she gets a phone call from her sister that says she's at a Vampire bar, and she is in trouble, but doesn't know how to get out of it - Erica gets really scared for her sister - Since she didn't say WHICH Vampire Bar she was at - Erica started with the letter A - and worked from There.. After Dark Club

Once inside the Club, she walks around looking for her sister. She doesn't see her. So she sits at the bar, orders a drink and tries to pay for it "You don't buy your own drinks here" Said this hot Female vampire Bartender. "I'll keep a tab on you, and when someone picks you up, he'll pay the bill"

Well Erica wasn't too happy about that remark, so she decided to pay for her drink anyways and leave. Her sister wasn't here and she was wasting time - She stands up to leave just as Frank, the Bouncer pins her down.... She had slid by and skipped out on the body search, since they were being a little too intimate with their hands, but he found her, and decided right then and there was a good place as any to give her the search... how embarrassing..

Frank was just about to escort her out of the club, when a deep husky voice spoke in her place... "I'm buying for her" The voice sent chills down Erica's spine.

That's where we meet Max- Max is a Vampire Investigator... more or less, a Vampire Cop- ready to keep the humans safe.
When Erica told him about her missing sister,he volunteered to look for her. But Erica insisted on going with him. There was No way she was going to let a vampire - anywhere near her sister without her there.

Max goes against his better judgment and brings her with him. Under the obligation that she follows the rules very carefully. She is to pose as HIS Feeder - and submit to him completely.

The story takes them around to a few of the vampire bars - lots of strange erotic scenes played out in front of her. Vampires on leashes, humans on their feet worshiping their vampires, things were heating up quiet a bit for Max and Erica- although he kept her safe, his imagination kept running away ...

Erica is a strong hearted woman who loves her sister and would do anything for her... Her feelings towards Vampires are limited to fear and anxiety. Until she meets Max. Her feelings change - a lot. She learns more of the vampire world, and becomes facinated with many different things.

Really a good book - it was too short for my taste though - but the en-script for the next book is about Erica's sister and Lucas :) Looks like a good one :D

2 to 2.5 stars -
I actually thought I was picking up a different book (both books had the pair of roses on the cover) when I started into Fresh Blood which was a Kindle freebie a while back, but I did know that I was picking up a vampire book. Anyway, Fresh Blood ended up being really mixed with vampire cliches - dangerous nightclubs with feeding and debauchery - and a toooooo stupid to live heroine who is straight-laced with a hidden wild yet submissive side and a plot with a powerful bad guy who is apparently just as stupid considering how he decided to lure the heroine into his clutches. What kept the book from being a waste of time though was some decent steamy stuff - though edging toward a bit heavy on the dominance for my tastes - and a hero that I really liked.

Don't know that I will pick up the next one, even though the next vamp leading man has potential, I am not sure if I can get past the fact that the next leading lady was a bit villainous in Fresh Blood - and while I like it when bad boys go good, I am not sold on the idea of bad girls going good.

This is a vampire romance. I have given great works of fiction 4 stars and also this book. I rate on my own enjoyment factor. This book kept me reading and I wanted to see how the story ended. It was fun all the way through - can’t ask for more. Girl (Erica) looking for her sister in vampire club and lands up getting the help of a vampire detective (Max). They both get more than they bargained for.

When I found out that author Jennifer Colgan had a vampire short story called Fresh Blood it intrigued me so I went and got a copy from Smashwords when it was a free read back in July. Boy am I glad!

Erica Talbot has a twin named Elena who is always and forever getting into one kind of jam or another and getting her sister to bail her out. This time when her sister calls she once again goes to rescue her never dreaming that she herself would need rescuing.

Max Hart is a Vampire, when he gets one whiff of Erica's alluring innocent blood he wastes no time going to her side in the club where she was to find her sister.

Erica did not know the rules when she went to the Vampire club, she had one goal in mind find Elena and get out. However when she encounters Max there is an instant attraction and she agrees to let him help her find her missing sister.

This story is skillfully woven, detailing a dark under belly of the Vampire world that is all the more sinister for it's beauty and sensual appeal. Not only does the reader feel very connected to the characters but you cannot help but hope Erica and Max find Elena and if they do she is still alive. The other aspects of the story that draw you in and keep you enthralled are the breathtakingly erotic scenes painted by the author between Max and Erica, he is masterful and she is just innocent enough to make what could be over the top work. Their ongoing relationship is sinfully delicious to watch as it unfolds, the twist that takes place with Elena shakes up the plot and by the end you really wish the author had penned another story as a sequel so some of the unanswered questions were explained. Even without that a thoroughly enjoyable read that entertains on many levels.

To find out more you really need to hit the 99 cent buy links to either AMAZON KINDLE, SMASHWORDS or BARNES AND NOBLE NOOK where you can get a copy free (at the time I posted this review) and get to reading today. This is a unique take on the vampire romance and it has enough heat to sustain even the most avid erotic romance reader from start to finish!

Erica Talbot is out to find her wayward twin, Elena, who has pleaded for saving. Having helped, or tried to help, her twin all her life, Erica sets out into the dark vampire world of modern day to find and free her sister from it - also hoping to get out quick before drawing too much attention to herself. While Erica sets out on her mission, she quickly comes face to fang with the overbearing, dominant vampires.

Drawn by the scent of her, Maxwell Hart - Vampire Investigator, steps in just in time to assist Erica in her first vamp confrontation. From here, they partner to locate her twin sister. What neither of them planned on were the twists fate was brining to them both.

This book started off fantastically and both main characters were well written. It was a step right into the story and no waiting for back story elements to be filled in.

***Gentle hints/spoilers you may want to skip***

The supporting cast was done decently, but there were a few drawbacks with the 'opposing' vampires. I never really got a feel for what Carlisle's true motivations were or why Kyra was so quick to sell out someone - other than her troubled past. There was no hinting to Elena's true feelings in regards to Erica.

And before I end my 'spoiler' section, my other quirk with the story was the fast developing relationship between hero and heroine. I know it's fiction, but I'm not a fan of the 24 hour fall in love scenerio.

***Gentle spoilers over***

In any case, I would definitely read more from Jennifer Coolgan, and will possible download the next book in this collection. She writes really well, does amazing, hot sensual scenes, and provides a plot admist the tale. Not to mention her ability to write good dialogue.

So overall this story gets 3 stars for the story, and 1 more star because the twist in the plot made up for the small things that irked me.

I suggest you give it a read.

Heroine: she was boring at best and obnoxious at worst. She was incredibly uptight and condescending even after she started doing the same things she turned her nose up at. She was also ridiculously naive for someone her age. The worst thing though was definitely her utter lack of back bone in actually sticking up for what was good for her. All in all not an appealing character
Hero: i didnt really get a great feel for him. he could be sweet but he could also be a domineering jerkwad. Slightly better than heroine but still not great.
Romance: thats a laugh. a 29 y/o woman and a centuries old vampire fall in love without knowing anything about each other? sorry i totally didnt buy it there was absolutely 0 romantic development
Sex scenes: they were ok but i think the blurb oversold it promising even mild bdsm. i mean maybe the background stuff but between the couple the closest it came was him telling her to be still which just came off as douchy not sexy.
Plot: actually moderately interesting. there was a fair amount of suspense and one twist that managed to surprise me though now that im thinking about it, it probably shouldnt have. i felt like some of the plot development couldve been replaced by romantic or character development though and made the book alot better.
Writing: passable but nothing great. i dont understand the fascination with giving twins similar names all it does is make things confusing-i had like no idea what was going on at the climax scene (and i mean plot wise not sex wise lol). There was also literally no mythology to the vamps. She just kept adding powers with no real explanation just because it suited the storyline. I know it was a short but there was plenty of time to stick a little something in for me.
Bottom line: not something i'd recommend. the characters are unlikeable and the romance unbelievable. The plot and writing arent bad but they arent great either

This was a nice little surprise. Initially, I was put off by the description on Goodreads, in particular the adult content warning. I just wasn't in the mood for something hardcore.

But, this is not hardcore, in fact, I'm not quite sure why they had to put the warning there at all, it's off-putting and it would have been sad to have missed out on this little gem.

It is an adult romance book and does have some slight references to BDSM, and certainly submissive behaviour is key to the story, but also quite appropriate. We are talking dominant vampires here. All in all though, the warning for me was unnecessary. We all know what these books entail, they are adult PNR's and therefore have adult concepts. A warning should exist for those that push the boundaries and really go the hardcore route, but this one is not one of those.

So, now that's off my chest, what about the actual story? I read this in one evening, I couldn't put it down. It was easy to fall into the world created, to get attached to the characters and to simply just want to see where it all led.

I really liked the vampires. Max was appealing, yet true to vampire characteristics in this genre. The world was borderline gritty, but not enough to make you baulk, only enough to make you believe. It was well done.

So, I am happy to give this little beauty an 8/10: "Excellent read, well written, fell right into the fictional world created" on the NBRS. Making it another sweet addition to my Top Reads Bookshelf

Intriguing

This story is about Erica and her need to take care of her sister. I didn't know what to make of the relationship between the 2 because we were so wrapped up in other things. Max steps in to save Erica when she gets into an unknown situation and now she needs to find out what she has gotten herself into. Overall I thought this was an intriguing story however somewhere we lost the main story. Max kinda took over and at the end we were like oh yeah there's the sister. I would recommend it because it was still well thought out and the characters were interesting.

I don't exactly know what I was expecting with this book but it far exceeded those expectations. I was impressed by the depth of the characters and the overall sexiness of the entire story. The D/s aspects between a vampire and his feeder were very intriguing (but then, I really like D/s storylines) and I loved how Erica's fall into being a submissive feeder was approached. I don't know if I can pinpoint any one thing that stood out for me, I just liked the entire story.

I did find Erica's slavish devotion to her sister disturbing, but at the same time it felt very real. I know that there are plenty of times when we refuse to see the bad things that the people we love have gotten themselves into simply because they're family and we love them and only want to believe the best. Does that make it easier to read about? No. But Erica's reactions when Elena needed her help- from dropping everything to rush out and meet her to ignoring her bad feelings and going alone to a vampire bar- worked for her character.

I liked Max's ability to switch between being a regular guy and a dominant vampire. There was something very sexy about that. And can that boy deliver a punishment or what?

Fresh Blood is an interesting, sexy read and I'm forcing myself to wait impatiently for the next book in the series.

Fresh blood is about Erica who is looking for her twin sister Elena when she gets a call from her saying she needs help, this call leads Erica to go into a vampire bar. She doesn't find Elena. But she does meet Maxwell Hart a vampire investigator, he tells Erica he will help her find her sister, but he feels a strong pull towards Erica, none that he has felt before and even though Erica swore to herself she wouldn't get involved in the vampire life, she finds herself drawn to Max too.

I read Fresh blood on my boyfriends iPhone, using iBook I downloaded or for free and decided I would give it a read, considering it was free I was pleasantly surprised by how quickly I got into the book and how much I liked it.
I enjoyed reading about Erica and her struggle with her feelings for Max and vice versa it was also nice to read from Max's point of view and to see how he actually hated that he was a vampire.
I was also surprised at how dirty the book seemed to get describing in detail about them having sex and so on.
I wasnt expecting the end at all and really felt sorry for her. Having her sister turn her back on her after all she had done for her was terrible.
Great read.

This book is one of the prime examples why you should never judge a book's quality and content solely by its price. This novella is free over at smashwords and this was one of those "can't-put-em-down" reads. The characters Erica and Max were very likable, well-rounded, and the chemistry between these two protagonists was beautifully written. Colgan took my heart around chapter one then kindly handed it back to me by the end of the book. You cared about the characters--so important.

This kind of human seeks vamp help to find loved one plot has been done before, but I liked the vampire detective twist that Colgan took on it. The romance scenes were lovely and captivating. The vixen in me would've loved if they were longer. I wasn't particularly fond of the POV change between the two protagonists always being indicated by "***". I prefer stories where it blends but is still distinct to avoid confusion, but aside from that, this story was great. It shall remain on my kindle. The ending seems to suggest there might be a sequel, and if so, I'll definitely be picking it up.

Erica Talbot has always rescued her twin sister. Now Elena was asking her for help again. Saying she was caught up in the Vampire world and needed help. Erica decides the only way to find her sister is to go to the vampire night clubs.
She starts with A and goes to After Dark. When she finds herself in trouble for not staying until a vampire buys a drink for her she is rescued by a raven haired blue eyed man named Maxwell Hart. He also is a vampire detective who agrees to help find her sister.

Max is drawn to this human as he never had been to anyone before. He brings her to the night clubs and sees her disdain for his type and yet the pull of the underworld activities in the clubs. He wants to protect this human and that he wants her to see him as more than a vampire.

When Max finally gets into Elena's apartment to find her scent he realizes that Erica's sister is not who she thinks she is, he knows the truth and it't not good.

The sexual situations in the book are pretty strong.

Time: 11:39. Look at that, it's actually before midnight! Okay SPOILER ALERT!!!!!!!!!

One: It is nasty that Max slept with Elena and Erica. Siblings with the same man? No. Just no.
Two: Can't think of two, but I know there was one. Jeez, I'm 18! One would think I would have a better memory than this. Unfortunately, I only remember the story, not what bugged me about the story. And really, he's known her for how long? Less than 24 hours, he says it himself. That is not love, it is lust. Love takes time. Chemistry doesn't. Maybe I'm just getting tired of all these books where they meet, fall is LUST, have monkey sex all over the place, and get married in two weeks. That's not what real life is. Of course, one could argue that we read to escape from life, to let our imaginations free, etc. Maybe that was number two. Lust vs. love. It doesn't feel right in my head, but I will drop it for now. 3 stars.

I found this to be a great quick read. It is not a short story but I read through it in hours. Max is a vampire investigator. He polices his own kind and runs into Erica who is looking for her twin sister. Her sister sent her message asking for her help. All she knows is that her sister is in a vampire bar but she doesn't know which one. Of course knocking door to door in these bars could get her killed. Max was attracted to her scent but can't turn away to her plight. Plus he knows she'll get her self killed or turned if he doesn't help her. On top of it Erica finds the vampire world appauling. Oh what fireworks this will ensure. The book was fun, exciting and fast paced. It kept you constantly reading. I look forward to La Vida Muerta, Elena, the twin's story. Won't give anymore away. Have to read it to find out.

I will honestly say that i have enjoyed this book. It was very interesting on how the author of this book, Jennifer Colgan, made the vampire world seem to be realistic/believable. Though what did not surprise me is the love between the vampire and human characters, Max Hart, the vampire and the human girl, Erica Talbot. Of course, in every vampire book, you'd find the vampire to fall in love with the human instantly, known to be their "mate", in this case it did not state the fact that Max had found his mate, but it was obvious due to the fact like Erica longed for Max and Max longed for Erica throughout the story most of the time. I did not come to expect who Erica's sister was. I enjoyed reading this book very much, i have read it more than two times and i could not put it down.

Erica's twin sister is a bit of a partier and goes missing. She calls Erica for help and Erica drops everything to save her like she always has. Erica searches vampire bars in hope of finding her and runs into sexy Max Hart. He is a vampire that works for the vampire government and decides to help Erica look for her sister. Things heat up between them once Erica begins to play the part of feeder in order to find her twin.
I enjoyed the story line and the sex scenes were pretty steamy, but I thought it was strange that Erica was so submissive. I don't think I would be complacent with a man not letting me touch him and would want to take control every now and then.

Another free iBooks read that really Impressed me. Just because it's free doesn't mean it sucks. A quick read (good for a day at the beach or a road trip).. It was filled with mystery, romance, and betrayal. Erica is searching for her sister, Elena, whom calls saying she needs her help. Erica's search leads her into a world of vampires and into a romance with one. I was honestly surprised by what happened at the end with Elena. I feel like a lot of books are predictable but this had a good twist.

This was my first Jennifer Colgan book, and it will be the first of many.

I loved it. What a great world and what lovable characters Erica and Max were. I loved Ms. Colgan's pacing and her creativity in writing her own unique twist on vampires (they can make you feel like they are warm and like they have a heartbeat!).

The story was great and the romance was even better. The pacing was swift, and the tension was perfect.

I highly recommend Fresh Blood to fans of paranormal romance.

This was a fantastic free read, I would have paid to read this! There were twists and turns, some I wasn't even expecting. The story flowed well and it was easy to keep up with everything that was happening. Erica was a great female lead, strong and determined unlike her sister who was obviously the weaker one, the way she turned on Erica was terrible. I loved Max, he was brilliant. I couldn't stop reading from start to finish.

Erica is looking for her twin sister Elena, in vampire clubs after she leaves a message that she needs help. Erica has always rescued her sister when Elena found herself in trouble.
When Eric was one of vampire clubs she stumbles upon Max who rescues her from a dangerous situation. Max helps Erica find her missing sister, Elena.

This is the type of ebook that I would purchase but it was a free ebook on b&n website. I throughly enjoyed. Colgan draws readers in. Highly recommend.

Freebie !! I quite enjoyed this book, it was a quick read for me whilst sitting waiting for Kids. The main charactor (Erika)was looking for her twin sister who had disapeared after getting herself envolved with the vampire underworld.

It was a good plot, Erika needed the help of a vampire investigator and it went on from there, the ending was good and unexpected.

I would say worth a read.

Well, this author sure didn't do anything original in this book; the book just felt too safe for me. I like books that have a lot of danger and excitment and this book didn't have either. The overall plot is ok and there was a twist in there that made me say..."Wow". This book is for someone looking to kill time:-)

I love Ms Colgan's voice and thoroughly enjoyed Fresh Blood. So, why the three-star rating? I had a few issues connecting with Erica. She made some "seriously" decisions that left me wondering about her motivation...and sanity. I'm happy to say, it all worked out in the end. AND I'll definitely read more of Ms Colgan's work!
