When the plant-eating Green Sox face the meat-eating Rib-Eye Reds, baseball will never be the same. Tied zip to zip, the game is a pitchers' duel until the Green Sox's hothead manager goes snout to snout with the dodo umpire and gets tossed out. The Sox respond with their veggie-powered bats and score three runs! Momentum swings back to the Reds before the seventh inning stretch, and they're all tied up in the bottom of the ninth. Will this game need extra innings, or will Apatosaur save the day?Book Library BindingPublication 4/1/2010 32Reading Age 5 and Up
Kids love dinosaurs and kids love baseball - so they adored this rhyming book about the plant eating dinosaurs of the Green Sox vs the carnivores of the Rib-eye Reds, played at Jurassic Park, of course! With colorful illustrations and lots of baseball action (even a team manager who "throws his hat and kicks home plate...he calls the ump a nasty name and gets ejected from the game.) This is a book that appeals to very young kids because of the rhythm and rhyme, dinosaur players and bright, colorful illustrations. Because of the vocabulary and game descriptions it appeals to the adults in the group as well as preschoolers.
Lisa Wheeler and Barry Gott create another amazing children’s book involving dinosaurs playing a sport. This time the Green Sox are playing the Rib-Eye Reds. The text follows a rhyming scheme that describes the atmosphere of the Jurassic Park and highlights common themes related to baseball. The illustrations are once again full of life and bright colors. I really enjoyed the detailed illustrations and how you could see the different expressions on the dinosaurs face. Another aspect of this story that I loved was how the author introduces the different types of dinosaurs while creating a wonderful rhyming story. As a person who loves both dinosaurs and baseball, I absolutely adored this book. I would include this picture book in my classroom because of the rhyming scheme, wonderful illustrations, and its connection with baseball which will intrigue children to pick it up and read it.
I love this series! The rhyming is super creative and engaging! It is also very educational--both about the sport as well as the different kinds of dinosaurs. The illustrations are extremely detailed and humorous. Our son reads these books over and over again.
The illustrations captivated the kids at my school from the first moment the book arrived. “Oooh,” the kids squealed. “Dinosaurs! And baseball! Can I check it out?!”
Basic Plot: A wild dinosaur baseball game play-by-play!
This was a fun book to read to my little boy. He likes dinosaurs (what little boy doesn't? At least to some degree?). The only trick is that he doesn't yet know baseball well enough to appreciate the references to the game. I enjoyed them, though, so I suppose that counts for something. The art in the book was good, with lots of details in the drawings to discuss with little ones. If the book has a flaw, it's that the book was so fun to read it riled up my little man before bed instead of getting him ready to sleep!
I've talked before about Lisa Wheeler's dino books. They're so good! Christopher selected Dino-Baseball on Tuesday night because he needed a book about dinosaurs. I read the dinosaur names, but he read everything else until we hit his 15 minutes. Then I read the last couple of pages.
He has renewed interest in this series and keeps asking when Dino-Racing will be out - October, but we already have it pre-ordered.
This series is a fun idea, but somehow is lacking in the execution. My boy listened all the way through but was disappointed in the end.
What I liked: - The prose has a good rhythm and rhyme. - Long dinosaur names are shortened making it easier to pronounce the names. - The artwork is fun and illustrates the story well.
What I didn't like: - Requires a certain amount of knowledge of the rules of baseball to understand the book. - The story lacks a flow. Felt like I'd skipped a page a couple of times when I hadn't.
And I thought "Dino-Hockey" was great! Really? The Green Sox? And the Green Monster? And the mascot, though not named, looks a lot like, hmmm, Wally? AWESOME!!! The home runs, bases loaded, manager ejection, all great details of baseball. Adding in the patriotism of the dinos, and the traditional Seventh Inning song break....really, I can't stop grinning. Go SOX!!!
Genre: Fantasy Grade: 2nd-5th Unique Characteristic: I like this book to use with young kids because it has a ton of rhyming and it is very engaging. I think it is better as a read aloud for younger kids because some of the dinosaur names are difficult to pronounce, but I read this with my first graders and they really enjoyed it!
Happened upon this book under new arrivals. Outstanding pictures and a great story - love one that rhymes well. The dinosaurs are wonderful. It inspired me to find more books by this author. Highly recommended.
This was a cute story, as all the books in this series are. It kept up a pretty entertaining pace. This is good for the younger elementary level reader, especially boys who would find this very entertaining.
Boys love dinosaurs so this ones sure to be a hit! Plus, with the rhyming text and the super exciting illustrations, parents will enjoy reading this one aloud. Great book by the talented Lisa Wheeler!
Read this to kindergarten because we needed a baseball-related book and the selection was limited, but I don't think I'd repeat it. I was able to make some of the parts exciting, but overall, there was a lot of narration that would go over the head of any kid who's not dino crazy.
This is my little boy's favorite book, along with Dino-Football. I can't tell you how many times I have read this to him (and with him, since he has parts of it memorized). I love it. Such a fun little book.
It took me about two pages before I realized that it was Carnivores vs. Herbivores. This book plays out a game between different dinosaurs. I liked the drawings and this book was easy to read. It got my son excited to see which team would win.
I like this book because I like baseball so you might know there's baseball on the cover and then the sock mascot jumps up and down and there's a beef mascot (it looks like a beef mascot) and the sock mascot is a sock and the beef mascot is beef!
A new favorite of John's - dinosaurs playing his favorite sport. He also really liked Dino-Hockey and we're anxiously awaiting Dino-Soccer from the library.
My son loves this series. These books contain the best marketing...each ends with a page depicting the next dino sport season. My son constantly asks for the next book.
The four year old child that requested this book to be read picked it because it was about dinosaurs. He really liked the pictures. The story did not keep his attention at all.
What was the point of the part where the coach calls the ump a name? That isn't what I care for my toddler to read about, even if the ump throws out the coach!
