Altogether a strange book, but interesting. There's an emphasis on the ability for individuals as well as "races" to acclimatize to high altitudes, but the mechanisms are a little fuzzy here. Certainly interesting to see how the level of understanding here has morphed into such a precise use of altitude in training, for example, cyclists. In these cases it does not take a matter of years, as suggested in the book. The discussion of how the Andean people still find negative health effects at low altitude, when it is commonly thought of as only going in the other direction (in terms of altitude sickness) was interesting as well. I often felt it was teetering on the edge of race science but I think that was just being sensitive to some of the language being used. Overall an interesting read, and like any good science book, ends on an appeal to politicians to implement the findings within.
