Embracing Silence is book one in the Project Alpha series by N.J. Walters. This book was generously provided to me in exchange for an honest review by NetGalley, Ellora’s Cave Publishing, and by the author. This is my first book by N.J. Walters and it was amazing. I loved it!

The year is 2133 on Earth. Humans are divided between two groups. The elite that live within the confines of a camp run but a ruthless General, and those who don‘t. Tienan used to live within those walls but not ever as a free man. Tienan was an Alpha. A man genetically enhanced in an experimental program to be an unstoppable fighting machine. Once they found cheaper ways to engineer soldiers, they decided to kill off their human experiments. Tienan and his friend Logan both escaped before they could be killed.

Now Tienan lives outside the walls, with only one goal, to kill the man at the head of it all, the General. For the last few weeks Tienan has known someone was following him. He finally decides to turn the tables and to catch his follower and interrogate him as to why he was being followed. But surprisingly, his follower turns out to be a woman, a very enticing woman.

Hotness:

Silence has never known family or love. The closest thing she has is Adrian. He rescued her when she was near death at twelve years old. Now Adrian is like an adopted brother. He protects her. They live within the resistance. Adrian is their leader. She has seen the stranger and was afraid he meant harm to Adrian and their group. So she’s been following him. Little did she know she was about to become the hunted.

Once Tienan turns the tables on Silence, neither he nor she expects the attraction. He wants to interrogate her but all he can think about is touching her.

“With just that simple touch he had her shackled as tightly as though she were wearing chains.”

“He was legendary for his control, in all areas, but Silence was making a mockery of it. He needed her the way he needed air to breathe.”

:

The General’s men have found Tienan’s hide out. Who tipped them off? Was it Silence? This book was fantastic. It was crazy sexy but there was also suspense and danger. I love the world this author has created. I can’t wait for the next book in the series, Assassin’s Awakening, which will be Tienan’s friend, Logan’s story.

“You were made for me.”

Can I just remove the memory of this book from my brain?

First off, this book needs a different cover ASAP. Those sunglasses are not cute, honey. And that flowing hair! He looks like he's in a shampoo ad not like the kickass assassin he's supposed to be. Sigh. I'm sorry, but it's atrocious.

The only reason I forced myself to ignore the cover and read the book was because I thought the hero was a virgin! (b/c this book was on the "Books with Virgin Heros" list) So imagine my surprise and disappointment when I get 25% in and learn he's not a virgin!

I kept on reading because the story was alright and I honestly had nothing better to do.

My Thoughts: (spoilers)

- Okay, so he kidnaps you, keeps you isolated in a dark room for two days, then fucks you, and YOU'RE IN LOVE??!!?? That was so unbelievable I can't even.

description

- From the reviews I read, I was expecting Silence to be kickass. She wasn't. What the fuck was up with her nipples "puckering" and "pebbling" every time the hero so much as looks her way. One touch and her breasts are swollen and shit. I think she needs to get that checked out.

- Pro: this was a quick read, but very forgettable. Expect for that cover--I think I will see it in my dreams tonight. *shudders*

No lie but broken cities, dystopian settings, and badass Alpha males are like candy to me. I just eat them up. This book worked all three of those and threw in a side order of sex-ay. Yes, I am smitten. Seriously. What is it about genetically engineered soldier-types fighting against their oppressors that makes me all gooey?

Beyond the setting, Silence and Tienan worked for me. While their attraction is of the typical "see one another and desire madly" variety, it was sexy and fun. Okay, maybe fun is the wrong word. I mean, being chased and hunted and nearly killed isn't fun but it is entertaining. I liked that Tienan was hit hard by the lust bug as soon as he saw Silence. I liked that she trusted him and did everything she could to get back to him when they were separated. Oh, yeah, and the sex was smokin'.

I'm not going to lie, I'd read more of these books in a heartbeat. Sexy super soldiers do it for me.

This was ok. Yeah just Ok. It was interesting the way future earth was, but there was no background on how it got that way. It was just like bam and the story started.

There was insta love. Tienan was genetically grown and for someone that was supposed to be so steadfast lost his faculties so easily over a woman kinda didn't ring true to me. Yeah it made him look softer and made him more acceptable, but if he was the genetically engineered soldier he wouldn't be so over the top about Silence.

There is a ton of sex. Hot sex. Page after page sex. Shower inducing sex. So if that is not your thing then pass on this. There seemed more focus on the sex and less on the storyline. There needed to be more story around the sex. NJ knows how to write sex. She makes it very hot!

I love NJ's werewolf series and I was expecting more from this story then I got. A tad disappointed, but it wasn't all bad just not great.

Was gifted a copy from the publisher through NetGalley.

Earth in the year 2133 is not where anyone would want to live unless they are on the inside of the Gate. The wealthy and the privileged live within the Gate. Silence is not one of those. Silence is not even sure where she came from or who her parents are. She has her place as a tracker among the Resistance. The Resistance has given her a home since she was twelve years old. It’s the best life one could possibly hope for in this desolate land and time.

The Ruling Council wanted to protect the precious life that is inside the Gate. They had the Piedmont Corporation create what they hoped would be the perfect soldier with Project Alpha. They enhanced the soldiers, sent them on missions, they made killing machines. Those killing machines eventually started thinking for themselves. Eventually the Ruling Council ordered them destroyed at any cost. Alpha One, Tienan escaped that fate and now braves his existence outside the gate.

Embracing Silence is an erotic sci fi romance that is set in a dystopian city that is near this Gate. Tienan is wanting to get near the leader of the Resistance. Silence is following “the stranger” trying to figure out what his motives are. This is a lawless land and everyone simply has to watch their backs at all times. There is also this security force that captures people living outside the Gate to question them, then they are either used for slaves or killed. I have no idea what they’re questioned about. I have no idea why Tienan was looking for the leader of the Resistance. I have no idea why Earth fell to despair. The author delivered on the hot and sexy. I needed a little more substance to go along with the sex though.

2.5/5; 3 stars; B-

I'm going to give the same review to all three books in this series. I thought N.J. Walters was a good writer. I liked the story development, dialogue and flow of the words. I guess I've come to realize that when I'm reading a science fiction or fantasy story, I want that story....not an erotica story.
These three stories had the makings of a decent short futuristic sci-fi, but somehow I just felt it was a set up so each story could show two people meet, have some irresistible pull towards each other, have smokin' hot sex. Then have more smokin' hot sex, and finally, after a day or so, fall deeply in love.
I would have preferred to have one book, with the story of the futuristic city and the overthrow of the ruling evil council with the various love stories woven in.
I will definitely read other work by this author, I think she is talented.

It's 2133, there's those inside the Gate who seem to have it all and those outside that live in pollution and a Mad Max kind of world. Inside is the Piedmont Labs with the General and outside are bands of outlaws and the Resistance Alliance and everyone else desperately trying to survive.

Tienen was bred in a lab with enhanced abilities until they decide he and those like him are no longer useful. When the Piedmont Labs decide to terminate Project Alpha Tienan and the other last known alpha escape with plans to destroy Piedmont and take down the Gate community.

Silence is part of the Resistance living outside the Gate, she tracks down Tienan believing he may be a threat to the Resistance, not knowing his more a threat to her heart.

Tienan knows he's being hunted and turns the tables on Silence and captures her but it quickly turns into something more as these two have a connection neither has felt before, leading to hot, steamy sex.

This is quick, hot, steamy read but it feels like it's ending just as things are beginning. I liked it but I'm left wondering where the rest of the book is. This is almost entirely about Tienan and Silence while hinting at a bigger story of the fight against the General, Piedmont Labs and the Gate.

I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads.

Let me start by saying that this is not the first time I’ve read Embracing Silence or the Project Alpha series. I actually own the original Ellora’s Cave ebooks, purchased and devoured over four years ago. Because of that, I jumped at the chance to read and review the re-releases of the series. Walters is one of my favorite paranormal and sci-fi romance authors, especially sci-fi erotica. Normally, I wouldn’t mention the previous publisher in a review of a re-release, but considering that EC is known for their erotica, I kind of feel compelled to include the information because a new reader unfamiliar with Walter’s writing might be surprised with just how erotic the novella is. And frankly, I’d hate for the author to be penalized for that because there are plenty of sci-fi erotica lovers like myself who will be titillated by Walters’ writing.

Embracing Silence is a futuristic novella set in a post-apocalyptic wasteland. Tienan is an Alpha – a genetically engineered super soldier who escaped destruction and is now hoping to bring down the very people who created him to kill. However, he doesn’t have an actual plan and has spent the time since his escape trying to develop a plan, find allies to help him with his mission, and avoid being caught by General Caruthers. Enter Silence. Now, now, she’s not the bad guy (or girl, I should say). She’s part of the resistance and, like those she is aligned with, has noticed the uptick in military activity in the area and is determined to find out if the stranger who is eluding the military is a danger to her leader, Adrian, and their people. Unfortunately for Silence, Tienan is better at stealth than she is and she soon becomes his prisoner when she gets too close in her pursuit. Neither trusts the other, but neither can deny the unusually strong attraction between them – at least not to themselves – and when the dam breaks, they drown themselves in one another. Whew! When Tienan’s guard is down, the timing of Silence’s escape couldn’t be worse because of the conclusions Tienan is forced to draw, and that puts a bullseye on Silence’s back, one that Tienan isn’t entirely sure he can follow-through on despite his feelings of betrayal.

If, like myself, you own the original editions of Embracing Silence and were wondering how much revision the book has undergone, I’m going to have to tell you that I really don’t know. It’s been several years since I last read it, but there really wasn’t anything that jumped out at me as far as the story itself goes. Because it has been several years since I last read it, it was almost like reading it again for the first time and it reminded me why I enjoyed the book and Walters’ writing so much – she combines just the right amount of action, attraction, and romance to keep me coming back for more. If you’re not a fan of insta-love, this might not be for you because the bulk of the story takes place over about a week’s time. However, if you’re a fan of sci-fi erotica and like a story with your steam, then you might want to check it out. As for me, I’m diving into the second book in the series.

I’m loving it as some of my favorite authors get the rights back to their old series from that publisher whose name we don’t speak! Embracing Silence was first released in 2009 and I was thrilled when I realized I had not read this series even though I powered through this authors Legacy Series way back when.

The first in Project Alpha series, I read Embracing Silence straight through. For such a short book there was lots of goodies packed in–danger, treachery, a romance with some ups and downs, and some scorchingly hot sex.

In this world, to survive you almost have to be badass or you are going to end up dead. Silence was a gifted tracker, able to go in and out of places and follow people virtually undetected. Until she bit off more than she could chew with the mysterious man that had been ghosting around the ruins of the outer city.

Tienan is one of the last remaining alphas, born from test tubes, part man, part computer. Their creators decided to terminate them all but missed a few. Said to have no emotions, but this is not quite the case. Especially when Tienan first captured Silence. She awakened a protectiveness in him he didn’t know what to do with.

Tienan was unbelievably intelligent, super strong, and trusted only his fellow alpha brother, Logan. Buried way underneath everything he had a fierce heart and just a tiny little sense of humor. Plus he was extremely good looking. Silence was super smart, skilled, and extremely loyal to her adopted brother, Adrien, the leader of the resistance.

My only complaint is there wasn’t much backstory or world-building to go on. The characters were so richly crafted and the scenes so engaging it, the lack of backstory doesn’t take away from your enjoyment but my inquiring mind was just itching to know more. What happened to the world? Why the need for super soldiers? And I really wanted to know more details of how Tienan and Logan escaped. Being told instead of shown such an integral part of the story felt wrong.

Even wanting more, I thoroughly enjoyed Embracing Silence, and I look forward to the next one. I’m hoping Adrian is up next, but I also hope at some point we’ll get to meet Logan.

This is Book #1 in the Project Alpha series.

It is 2133 and it is about a failed government project of a super soldier (which we have seen a thousand times).

I like the background of the story with some of the Alpha's escaping the government and are now living outside the gate. Inside the gate is government, safe, clean, and freedom of sorts. Outside the gates are the Alpha's and others who are on the run or just the one's that don't want to conform.

This story is about Silence and Tienan. Silence was a young girl when she meet Adrian. Adrian took the role of big brother and taught Silence how to survive. Adrian also gave her the name, since she did not have one. Adrian runs part of The Resistance on the outside of the gate. Adrian is their leader. Silence has heard about a new stranger on the outside of the gate and has taken it upon herself to track him so that she can report it back to Adrian.

Tienan catches Silence and both of their worlds change. Silence fears that Tienan will rape and kill her. Tienan assures Silence that he will not rape her but he has not decided her fate on killing her as of yet. Tienan & Silence have an attraction to each other that they both try desperately to deny. Silence escaped Tienan and Tienan thinks that Silence has betrayed him since the government found their safe house. Silence sees the enemy closing in on Tienan as she is escaping to tell Adrian that she is okay and cannot get back to Tienan to warn him of the enemies closeness.

Tienan swears that he will hunt Silence down and punish her for this betrayal. But he is all talk because he is in love with Silence. And Silence is in love with Tienan. Tienan meets Adrian and together they come up with a plan to take out the enemy and be truly free.

The only problem I have with this series is that all of the books are less than 200 pages. I would like them to be more of a book than a novella.

Entertaining steamy story of what the world might be like in 2133 should something horrific happen leaving some as haves and others as have nots. Throw in the heroes of the trilogy, Alphas genetically and otherwise enhanced in a research lab, and you have the setting for this story and the two that will follow.

Tienan, Alpha One, is set on revenge. Having escaped his handlers he would like to meet up with Adrian, help the resistance in taking down the governing body and destroy the research facilities that created him. Silence, the woman closest to Adrian, just happens to meet him one night when she is tracking him and oh boy – what a meeting it ended up being. Eventually Adrian and Tienan meet and this episode of the trilogy ends with a HEA for Tienan and Silence.

Well written and engaging I did enjoy Embracing Silence. I might have liked a prologue that could show up in all three books – one that explains what catastrophe happened in the past, how long things have been as they are and a few other pertinent details. That said – it is not necessary for a novella to have the details a novel would more than likely include. The reader knows something happened, things are not the same for all, it is the future, who is good and who is evil, etc. I will definitely look for books two and three of this trilogy and also other books by this author.

Thank you to NetGalley and Carina Press for the copy of this story. This is my honest review.

3 1/2 stars rounded up to 4 stars

Ms. Walters has done an excellent job of world-building and describing in vivid detail what life would be like in 2133.

Tienan had escaped through the Gate into the ravaged landscape that surrounded the pristine city within its walls. His continued survival depended on his abilities to hide from those who wanted him dead, those who had created him thirty years before. Only one other Alpha had escaped the termination order that was Logan, the man he considered his brother. Together they vowed to destroy the labs that had created them and then ordered them killed.

Silence grew up outside the walls and all she knew was poverty and despair until she was rescued by Aiden, who was the leader of the rebellion. Never one to follow orders, she tracked the man she'd never seen before never realizing that he was tracking her.

The story is romance but it also has other elements of great story telling: intrigue, betrayal and lust. I can't wait to see where the story goes.

I'm all for a dystopian, crazy messed up read. Embracing Silence is that.

The world is a mess. The rich people have it all. There are genetically engineered men called Alphas. Most of them are gone, but those that remain are out to buck the system. The story feels mildly similar to many out there, but still has it's own elements of intrigue.

The romance between MCs is good and the elements of the Alpha One's, Tienan, personality that come through unexpectedly make that more fun to read. They're not made for romance or love. It's an unexpected glitch that will probably have terrible implications later down the line.

I'm interested in seeing what happens in book two, about another Alpha, hoping that it will include Tienan and Silence.

I don't usually read the futuristic or post Apocalypse type books (hence The Hunger Games still on TBR rather than Read!) but this had the erotica element and that seems to be the phase I'm in at the moment so I gave it a go. It was pretty good. The characters and writing were pretty well done. I'm not sure how I feel about the whole falling-in-love-after-two-days bit, but this is fantasy not reality so I went with it! The smexin was hot and there were a few times the anticipation of what would happen next got a little high. I will be reading the next one in the series, and more than likely the third too. :)

Futuristic books are some of my favorite books to read and I loved everything I've ever read by N. J. Walters and this book was no different. I really liked it. There were a few issues with it. One of which it was short and therefore felt kind of rushed and the back story wasn't as fleshed out as I like but I'm hoping that the next story in this series will fill in some of the blanks. I really liked the characters Silence especially. She was a bad-ass but she had her quirks. Some folks would see flaws I see quirks. Tienan now he was more caring that I would think someone would be with his type of raising. But that was only towards Silence.

I will be reading the next book in this series because I really want to see where Ms Walters goes with this it. I give this one 4 stars and was given this book via Netgalley in exchange for consideration of a review.

Fantastic read !! I learned about NJ Walters in 2011, with her “Legacy Series”, read all books in that series. Now read or reading her "Salvation Pack" series, love each one. I learned of this series by accident and after reading this story, “Embracing Silence”, it was wonderful and can’t believe she has only written three books on this dystopian setting. I have purchased all three and look forward to reading Book Two.

In the erotic first installment of the Project Alpha trilogy, a violent wasteland becomes the backdrop for two assassins who arouse in each other much more than fear and suspicion

Earth 2133

The hunter becomes the hunted

Tienan is Alpha One, created by the privileged few who live shielded from a lawless land. He's been honed into the perfect involuntary weapon—vengeful, adaptable and ruthless. Finally free of the evil organization that created him, he's on the run with one option to survive outside the Gate: avoid recapture, even if that means killing again. But the sexy little stalker following him is too delicious to take out.

The captive becomes the captor

Silence is a tracker with the Resistance, a rebel force amassed to end the reign of terror. For Silence to trust Tienan is a risk, but to resist his brutal prowess is impossible.

Enemies become lovers

As raw sexual need takes over, alliances will shift and treachery could become as potent—and as lethal—as desire.

Review:

I had not read this series when it originally came out, but I love N.J.'s other books so I had to try it when it came up on Netgalley.

I was intrigued by this version of Earth, I just wish we could find out more of the why and how Earth became as it is in this book. That the hero is genetically modified put a good twist on this story and added extra dimension to Tienan. Another thing I was hoping to learn more about was Silence's background. It seems like shapeshifters, Alphas can sense their mate at least that is how the immediate attraction/lust comes across to me. They are both in the insta-lust mode when they meet each other and both fight the attraction for their own reasons. Though the chemistry is hot and the sexiness is well-written. This is novella length so everything happens at a fast pace. That and the story-line kept me engaged and reading wanting to know more about these people. This is a trilogy so I am not sure what is going to happen next but the end of this story was not really a cliffhanger, so it could be read as a stand alone title.

Tienan was created to be an Alpha, the perfect weapon, only he was given the ability to think for himself. He was scheduled to be destroyed, replaced by a better controllable model only he and another Alpha escape. He’s now on the run on the other side of the Gate, looking for others to help him take down his creators. Silence is a tracker and part of the Resistance Tienan is looking for. She is hunting him, stalking him, this unknown person in her world. The hunted turns into the hunter. Enemies become lovers. If they can come to trust one another, they may find a way to take down the reign of terror.

Judging by a few of the other reviews I see, I may be in the minority but I actually liked Embracing Silence. It reads fast and has the right balance of romance and action is this apocalyptic world. Tienan background and creation I found interesting. Silence (Oh THAT’S where the title comes into play. HAHA!!) Is feisty. As sad as her background was, I felt it was greatly described for what I would expect in this kind of world. Lots of fast-paced action, yes okay they do hop into the sack quick however, keep in mind a lot has to happen in 114 pages. Although, I do kind of think in a world that more than half the population has died, long-term courtships would be tossed out the window and replaced with the need to procreate.

The quick hook-up aside, I did like the premise for Embracing Silence. Destroyed world, evil leaders, rising rebellion, love found under harsh circumstances. It’s not a new theory but I like what author N.J. Walters has put together here. I’m looking forward to the next installment in the Project Alpha series.

Embracing Silence was a good 4 star read. Erotic Sci-fi romance

We are in 2133 and Silence is a tracker for the Resistance. She has been tracking Tienan for weeks, just when she thinks he doesn’t know she’s there, she finds herself being held captive. For being a captive, Tienan is taking very good care of her. Eventually they succumb to their attraction and have a hot and steamy night.

Her mind might be telling her she was making a huge mistake, but her body made no secret of the fact that it wanted him. Bad.

Silence slips away in the night to go back to the Resistance and Adrian. Tienan feels betrayed and vows to get her back. Things are not as they seem and Tienan quickly discovers the truth.

He would kill them all to save her if he had to. No one was going to harm her but him.

There is so much more to this great story and the attraction between Tienan and Silence continues to grow. It was an intense scene when Tienan and Adrian met for the first time. Can they stay safe and can Tienan get the revenge that he is looking for? All the secondary characters added a great element to the story. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series. 1-click and get started today.

This is a gritty series, but the passion between each set of lovers is intense. I preferred Embracing Silence slightly over the others if only because of the climax between Tienan and Silence when she thinks he does not care about her and thinks her adopted brother doesn’t trust her. I’m a sucker for a heroine who lifts her chin and puts one foot in front of the other despite being ravaged by heartbreak and the overwhelming sense of being alone and unloved. N.J. Walters does this really well and that ending gives Embracing Silence 5 Valentines. Sweet Charity with it’s gripping battle and the answers to so many questions raised in the first two books comes in next with 4.75 Valentines. Have Mercy may only rate 4.5 Valentines, but it’s still an amazing story, sexy and incredibly sweet. The series as a whole rates a 5 from me. If you like sci fi rom, you should read these.

I will not summarize the book, but I can say that I love this book. I've read it before and have the impulse to read it again, which I'm glad I did. Even though this is only 100+ pages, the scenes quite pack a punch and is a prologue on larger events that will happen in the next books.

Tienan is a one hot dude, that the attraction between him and Silence is definitely burning. But the time they fall in love is fast for me, but I guess with the environment they live in, it's really necessary to live life like there's no tomorrow. I also wish that the author describe the supposed to be action in the ending, not just summarize it that the job is done. Anyway, this is a enjoyable read and makes you wanna read the entire series.

This is a futuristic story of Tienan a bioengineered Alpha of Alphas. He is a man on the run from those that created him and have slaughtered most of those like him. He knows he's being tracked by someone very good, what he never expected was for that person to be a women.
Silence is the heroine in this story, what a gutsy female she is, orphaned and left to fend for herself at a very young age, she has learned to stay hidden, find things and people, she's very good at it , she is a part of the Resistance, those that are fighting the corrupt people that are after Tienan. Then comes the day she is caught by the one she hunted, The sparks between then cannot and will not be denied.
Enjoyed this story.

I enjoyed this more than I first thought I would. It is a great opening to a dystopian series, centered on genetically enhanced humans called Alphas. The have basically been given the ablities that are usually seen in weres without the shifting.

Tienan, of course, is the first. He and Logan, who we didn't here from in this book, escaped from the "lab" they were in. A good thing since they were due to be terminated.

While out he meets Silence, awesome name by the way. Silence is part of a resistance group and she takes it upon herself to find out who this stranger is lurking around their area.

Sparks fly when they finally come face to face, and the rest is history.

Filled with some pretty hot and sexy scenes, it is a promising start to this series.

I received a copy in return for an honest review by Netgalley. I am a huge fan of N.J. Walters and cannot believe that I missed this one when it was originally published *triple face palm moment*!!! In fact I now, am faced with the torture of having to wait for the next in the series to release. N J Walters knows how to deliver a book that has well developed characters and she has created a world that shows how devastating and dangerous the apocalypse can be. Greed, lawlessness, super soldiers, experimentation that is pure evil, where the rich are safe, the poor are left to survive and how love can grow even in the most trying of times. I can't wait to read more in this series.

While dystopian and Sci Fi are not my preferred genre, I was pleasantly surprised by my total immersion in Embracing Silence.

Set in the future with badass, genetically engineered, Alpha soldiers fighting for their freedom against communist type rulers, this was bound to be an action-packed, take no prisoners novella.

Ms Walters has a knack for great story development, interesting and sassy dialogue and an easy flow that makes reading her books effortless. And don’t forget the smokin` hot erotic element too; lovers of this author will definitely get their obligatory dose of steaminess!

Short but entertaining, now I’m looking forward to book two.
