Teon hasn’t seen his wife Revna in years, when they were forced to wed to prevent a war. He hates Vikings, her father especially, and yet he can’t help but be drawn to her.

I picked up this book because I’m trying to read more historical romance from different settings, and I don’t recall having read a Viking romance before, especially one it is the heroine who is Norse. In some aspects really enjoyed this book, but it was deeply frustrating in other ways.

I really liked the character of Revna – she’s a very sympathetic lead, a compassionate and clever leader who hasn’t let her often difficult circumstances ruin her outlook on life. I appreciated that we got to see how she held onto her Norse heritage and connection with her family even as she immersed herself in her new life. I also enjoyed the external plot of the siege and the way the clash between the Saxons and the Norsemen was portrayed.

However, Teon really got on my nerves. He starts the story as a very close-minded person, and while his character arc does involve him coming to realize how wrong he is, it’s a bumpy and irritating path there. He sees Revna and the Vikings as savage and untrustworthy. While I realize it is a historically accurate reaction for a Saxon prince of the era, it did nag me because it’s uncomfortable to see him desire her even as he openly despises her culture – and it lasts entirely too long. I found myself wishing the author had confined his hatred of Revna to being about just the death of his mother.

Disclaimer: I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley. This is my honest and voluntary review.

A forced marriage unites Saxon Prince Teon and a Viking maiden, Revna, in their youth. Teon, burdened by his prejudices against the Vikings, unjustly projects his resentment onto Revna, leaving a complicated relationship in his wake. His departure for eight years leaves Revna to forge her own path among strangers, a challenge she rises to.

Revna emerges as a compelling protagonist. Her strength, independence, and compassion are commendable, even as she exhibits a tendency to forgive too readily. Teon, despite his initial shortcomings in the form of prejudices and closed-mindedness towards Revna and her Viking heritage, undergoes a transformation by the book's conclusion.

The novel's medieval setting and Viking elements are engaging, contributing to the overall enjoyment of the story. The narrative thread involving their parents' histories is skillfully woven, adding depth to the characters and their motivations. Despite Teon's initial flaws, the book is well-crafted and enjoyable, enriched by its historical context and the compelling journey of its characters.

Thanks to NetGalley, Harlequin Historical Romance, and the author for the advance review copy!

Rating: 3.5/5
Heat Level: 3.5/5

I personally enjoy this level of conflict between the hero and heroine when they're political enemies and come from cultures that historically have hella beef. Revna's Viking clan attempted to invade Teon's kingdom back in the day, and Teon believes her people had his mother killed. So... when his father betroths him to Revna, he's understandably not pleased (plus, Revna is very underaged). Teon chooses to leave his kingdom for several years right after the wedding, only returning at his father's funeral. Predictably, he is surprised and horrified by his immediate attraction to his now-grown wife (I LOVE when this happens, really, any belated wedding night situation is my jam).

From here, Teon and Revna have to navigate their growing attraction towards one another (well, Revna has always loved him) while their fortress is under siege from Teon's half-brother who's threatening to take away not only Teon's crown, but his wife (again, love when this happens). There's actually a lot of tenderness between them fairly early on, as well as some moments of levity, which surprised me, considering they're at war. You can chalk this up to the characters— Teon, for all his grudge-holding, is actually pretty lighthearted all things considered, and Revna is very earnest and eager to help any way she can. All that being said, there's still this quiet, underlying distrust on Teon's behalf that only really gets resolved by the end of the story.

The sex:

The sex was well-written and, on an emotional level, a lot more light-hearted than I would have expected for this setting and with this couple, considering their history. Teon quickly comes to the (not entirely misguided) conclusion that having sex with his wife will allow him to be less distracted during the siege, which I thought was pretty funny.

I will say, for a man who is hellbent upon not having PiV sex with Revna because he doesn't want to have kids who aren't of "pure Saxon blood" (a Choice, and one that would work in only certain historical settings for me), Teon cracks REALLY fast.

Overall:

If you'd like to explore different historical eras in your romances and don't want a lot of... grimness, I guess, that I personally associate with Viking romances, then I'd recommend this book for you! I think I was expecting a little more darkness considering the premise and the setting, but I overall liked this book.

Thank you to Harlequin and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my review.

1 Star - DNF/Pausing at 39%

I liked the book blurb, but I'm finding reading this to be quite tedious. Nearly forty percent of the way through and it's been filled more with the inner thoughts, reflection on the past and their feelings than actual present day events.

Everytime we finally begin to experience a present day scene or dialogue between the two MCs it's casually transitioned into another three or four pages filled of the characters inner thoughts or feelings and then transitions back to the conversation that was taking place but by then I've forgotten what they were speaking about.

And the fact it's been ONLY two days since the hero returned (just turned into the third day when I quit) and he's went from being a complete insensitive, selfish and hateful asshat to the heroine to miraculously seeing her differently and of course feeling attraction and desire for her. Yes, I find it entirely believable that after EIGHT WHOLE YEARS of this man child stewing in his hate and bitterness towards his father, his unwanted wife and the Norse that all it takes is a day or two and he's seen the error of his ways and oh he's so conveniently in lust with his unwanted wife. Ah, romance! 🙄

Personally I didn't like the hero Teon. He was an asshole from the beginning and he had the emotional depth of a stubborn self-centered five year old. And, we just easily disregard how the heroine knows he slept around while gone all these years but despite its mention a few times it's made not to be a big deal.

I did like the heroine Revna from what I read. She had plenty of potential but was stuck hero worshiping her dumbass of an unworthy husband.

Frustrating. Boring. Very slow paced. Just disappointing. I might consider finishing this eventually with some skimming but for now I'm done.

Can hate change into something else?

Eight years ago Prince Teon married the Viking’s chief daughter Revna as an alliance between the two people. The marriage would prevent a war. But as this wasn’t Prince Teon wish, the day after his marriage, he left his home to fight other wars.
Now Teon has returned after the passing of his father, ready to claim the crown. But at his return, he is shocked to see how his own people has accepted heathen Revna as one of them. And not only that, he is also flabbergasted to see how Revna has turned into a woman. A woman he finds himself attracted to.
But the hurt and sense of betrayal of the past are too painful to be just forgotten, and Teon is adamant to keep his distance. That is until there is someone threating what is rightfully Teon’s.
And Teon may need Revna as his ally, and perhaps even more…

There have been several books written where the main characters had to marry out of duty, or that they were being forced, or to make an alliance.
And yes, in those books the main characters didn’t really like each other.
But in this book, Teon truly despises Revna, so much he even leaves his home to ‘escape’ her and their marriage!
Talking about forceful feelings, even if negative ones!

I have to say, while I immediately liked Revna, I had not so nice thoughts about Teon at the start.

But let me start with Revna…
Revna made the move to England with her Viking Chief father, ready for a fresh start after losing her mother and brother.
As her first encounter with Teon was well, nice is not the correct word, but Teon for sure made an impression, I could understand why Revna wasn’t putting on a bigger fight when her father asked her to marry the King’s son.
And it saddened me to see how Revna’s heart broke a little bit by Teon’s behaviour during the wedding and especially afterwards.
He couldn’t be any clearer about his despise for her and her people…

But I have to say, I admired Revna. Not only did she show in those eight years how she adapted to her new life, but she also managed to make the people like her and even love her. She showed her new family her values, and she became a real confidante, an ally, a member of the family.
She is also a fierce woman, as she knows how to handle a sword, and fight literally and figuratively speaking for her home. Even when Teon returns, she won’t just step back and let someone put her back in a corner.

Like I said, Teon initially didn’t score very well on my scoreboard. I could understand that he wasn’t all too pleased being forced to marry Revna. But he for sure could understand that Revna wasn’t at fault here?
However, slowly he lowers his armour and we, together with Revna learn how his feelings were born and how he kept onto them.
His sudden attraction towards Revna was a physical one, and while I found it superficial of him, I couldn’t blame him, as he is a man after all 😊.

I found the way he acted at his return rather cocky. He comes back after eight years, and expects that his word is law. In a way he is right, being the Prince, but I thought he could at least first asses everything and then put his mark…
But luckily for us, Revna is there to put in back in his place! 😊

While things between Revna and Teon are rocky, we slowly see how Teon starts to see himself the good influence Revna had on his home and family.
And while things perhaps start with a physical attraction, they are also building an emotional bond, even Teon doesn’t understand how deep that goes until he is faced with danger.

An unexpected danger and menace, that may jeopardize not only the fragile bond between Revna and Teon, but everything Teon and his ancestors has built over the years.
A danger that perhaps comes unexpected, but has been building for a long time…
A danger that also brings Revna and Teon closer, as they both see each other’s value and strengths.

I truly loved reading this story showing us that our perception over events can be wrong, that our prejudices of someone can be wrong, that our fears can be wrong and that our hatred can be wrong. And there are always two sides to a story, which we should both hear.

But we also see a lot of strength in this book, as Revna is a force to be reckoned with. And we see that love is a strong emotion, changing feelings into the complete opposite. And that even the most stubborn, adamant person can be changed by that powerful emotion, and make them desire something they never wanted before, but with the right person by their side, is all they would want.

Sarah Rodi wrote a great story, about strong characters but most important about love in perhaps the weirdest conditions. But sometimes it’s in the weirdest conditions that we find the most valuable things!

Second Chance with His Viking Wife is another knockout historical romance by the talented Sarah Rodi.

I really do love Sarah’s books, they just have this amazing ability to capture my attention right from the first chapter and hold onto it right until the last page. What also amazes me is how much she can pack into such short stories. This book is less than 200 pages, but it reads like it’s a full fledged novel. This book starts with a funeral, the king is dead and no one knows where his heir is. The main heroine, Revna married Prince Teon eight years ago, but he left her on their wedding night. Teon made it clear that he hated Revna and wanted nothing to do with her. Fast forward to the king’s funeral, and half-way through the ceremony Teon finally returns, surprising everyone. I loved, loved, loved this scene because the moment Teon lays eyes on Revna he is almost knocked down to his knees because he cannot get over how beautiful she is and the confidence she gives off. He realizes she is no longer that girl he left eight years ago. I also love it when a hero is bewildered, befuddled, or made speechless by the heroine. There is something about watching a heroine just destroying the heroes’ well ordered world. It really is fabulous. Revna keeps Teon on his toes and stands up to him, something he wasn’t expecting and isn’t used to.

The story itself is very fast paced. Almost right away, the castle where everyone is residing is under attack and they end up being under siege for days on end. There is plenty of action in this book, with mini skirmishes, fires, and betrayals. There are plenty of high-tension moments in this book that will leave you on the edge of your seat. I literally could not put this book down because I needed to know what would happen next.

Gosh, I like Revna and Teon as characters. They are both fierce, loyal, and brave. Getting to watch these two together was oh-so-satisfying. The chemistry and heat between these two leapt from the pages, and because they both have strong personalities, they clashed most spectacularly. High tension from the siege, hurt and anger from past misunderstandings, and an all-consuming attraction created this perfect storm of high emotions between these two. I loved watching Revna and Teon interact. You just know that when they finally act upon those lusty feelings they have for each other, things are going to heat up real fast (and boy, does it get spicy!). If you are a fan of forced proximity, one bed, enemies to lovers, and second-chance romances, then you will enjoy Revna and Teon’s relationship. There are some real hurdles these two have to overcome to be together. For Teon, he has to let go of his anger and stop blaming Revna for things she had no part in, and Revna needs to learn to be brave enough to open up her heart (again) to Teon.

Second Chance with His Viking Wife is an addictive, fast-paced, lusty romance that I will read again and again.

Thank you, Sarah Rodi, for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Revna of Greenland has known much loss in her life, first her mother and brother, then her home. She and her father arrived in Anglo-Saxon England with their clan and hopes for a new life. But soon after they arrive, battles break out and she is caught in the fight, but is saved by a handsome Saxon. A truce is called, but when the Queen is killed, Prince Teon launches another attack. This time to stop the fighting, Revna’s father Ravn, and King Edmund agree to have their children wed to to seal their alliance. Revna is happy to learn her betrothed is none other than the man who saved her, it gives her hope that she may have a happy marriage, but those hopes are crushed as soon as she is brought to his room after their wedding feast. Wounded but not broken, Revna refuses to return home to her father and soon finds her way to the hearts of the royal family and many of the castle’s residents. If only her husband would return and realize she is not his enemy.

Furious that he was forced to marry the daughter of the man he believes killed his mother to cement an alliance between King Edmund and Ravn of Greenland, Prince Teon verbally takes his rage out on his young bride and leaves her without a thought for eight long years. But upon learning that his father has passed, he returns to claim his throne and is shocked to see the young girl he left behind has grown into a lovely woman. He is angry at his attraction to her and that a heathen will Queen but he knows he cannot set her aside without causing a war. Instead, he vows to keep her at arm's length and will never taint his royal Saxon bloodlines by siring children with her. Time after time, he rails at her, blaming her for the sins of others, it isn’t until she she leaves that he realizes he has made the biggest mistake of his life, and wonders if it is too late for a second chance.

This is a fast-paced, action-packed story, with wonderful characters and lots of emotion. This story is filled with feuds, betrayal, lust, murder, battles, culture clashes, steamy love scenes, angry words, secrets, shocking revelations, and finally forgiveness leading to HEA. I enjoyed this story, even though I absolutely despised Prince Teon until almost the end of the book, but he managed to win me in the end. I also enjoyed the love scenes that were spicier than are normally found in these books. I would warn that if you are a “history purest”, you will probably take exception to the modern verbiage in this book, but I would recommend ignoring it and just enjoy the story.

The started off strong with an interesting setup (Greenland Viking FMC x Saxon Prince MMC), great tension between the MMC and FMC, and an actual enemies-to-lovers story.

Then it quickly became muddled with tedious inner monologue repeating the same information over and over. There’s too much telling and not enough showing. I skimmed multiple pages and missed nothing.

The couple’s banter leaves a lot to be desired. It feels dry and the dialogue doesn't flow. There's a lot of miscommunication and misunderstanding. The MMC is always the one starting arguments with the FMC while she longs for

The FMC is supposed to be strong, capable, and witty, but she gets captured and used against the MMC whenever she tries to help the war effort.

The MMC is stubborn and refuses to accept help from FMC's Viking tribe even though an alliance is literally the entire reason the King (MMC's father) arranged their marriage. I don't have an issue with morally gray/flawed heroes, but his decisions should still be consistent with his established character.

It's reasonable he resents his father for forcing him into marriage, but his castle is currently under siege and his people would be slaughtered if they lose. If he really cared for his people and was the brilliant military leader the side characters claimed he was, wouldn't he swallow his resentment and accept help?

Also, there’s a third act breakup that makes the MMC have a complete collapse of his character arc.

Terrific book. Teon and Revna were forced to marry to prevent a war. Revna was young and hopeful of a successful marriage. Teon is angry because he blames Revna's father for his mother's death. He then leaves to continue fighting other conflicts and stays away for eight years, returning only when he hears of his father's death.

I loved Revna. Instead of returning to her father's home, she stuck it out in her new life. As a Viking woman in a Saxon kingdom, she is looked at with suspicion and distrust. I liked hearing about how she earned the love and respect of the people around her by being the caring and compassionate woman she is. I also liked how she retained her Norse heritage and customs. That heritage is helpful during the siege as she uses her skills to help defend the castle. I also liked her independence, as shown by how she stood up to Teon when he tried to cut her out of things she'd been doing for years.

Teon was harder to like throughout most of the book. From the start, he takes out his prejudices against the Vikings on Revna, treating her with cruelty and contempt. After his return, he continues to do so, blaming her for anything wrong. He even refuses to consummate the marriage, not wanting to "taint" his pure Saxon blood with her heathen blood. He isn't happy about his growing desire for her.

I enjoyed watching the relationship develop between Teon and Revna. Because of the siege, they are forced to work together, and their growing attraction becomes harder to resist. Teon's blind prejudice against Revna takes hit after hit as she shows her care and compassion for Teon's people. Despite his vow to avoid tainting his bloodline, he rationalizes taking Revna to bed to stop his distraction during the fighting. There are a few sweet scenes between them, but even then, Teon pulls away, recalling his reasons for his hatred. When he goes too far, Revna sneaks away, and Teon finally realizes the truth of his feelings.

Teon's hatred of the Vikings lies in events involving his parents and Revna's father. I enjoyed the slow revealing of those events and the truth behind them. Revna's determination and bravery in pursuing the truth also opened Teon's eyes to the things he didn't know. Teon's father's past comes back to bite Teon when his illegitimate half-brother lays siege to the castle, determined to take Teon's castle, crown, and wife. The details of the fight are vividly described, making it easy to feel part of the action. The resolution of the siege is intense, with several twists that kept me glued to the pages. I loved the ending and seeing Teon embrace his feelings for Revna.

Second Chance with His Viking Wife is an emotional and enticing historical romance by Sarah Rodi that will hold readers spellbound from start to finish.

Prince Teon had only married Viking chief’s daughter Revna out of obligation and he had taken one look at his bride at the altar and bolted. Teon wanted nothing to do with his plain, ungainly and unworldly wife and he had instead opted to fight in a war rather than spend another second shackled to a woman he didn’t even like, let alone love. With his father having passed away, Teon returns after almost a decade away and finds that the girl he had left behind has matured into a strong, independent and very beautiful woman.

Revna has never forgotten the humiliation she had endured when Teon had abandoned her or his barbed comments and withering looks. Having been left in a strange land by her father and then her husband with people who didn’t trust her, Revna had had to work hard to win their respect and devotion; a mountain which she had managed to climb with grace, kindness and intelligence. Revna is not exactly overjoyed about her husband’s return yet she is surprised by their unexpected and intense attraction – and by a passion that simply cannot be denied.

Succumbing to temptation soon proves inevitable for Revna and Teon and as they grow closer, they begin to wonder whether their convenient marriage could lead to a love that could last a lifetime – or whether they were about to continue to let the past come between them.

Sarah Rodi is so good at immersing her readers in the Viking period and of making her readers feel the intensity and emotion her characters go through and she does this superbly yet again with her latest historical romance. Second Chance with His Viking Wife is a dramatic, passionate and captivating tale that sparkles with sensuality, jeopardy and desire.

Revna is a terrific heroine readers will warm to immediately and Sarah Rodi is such a wonderful writer that I went from disliking Teon in the beginning to swooning over him over the course of the book.

Sarah Rodi’s Second Chance with His Viking Wife is another terrific historical romance from this talented writer readers will thoroughly enjoy.

This book was given to me by Harlequin and NetGalley to review. Thank you for the opportunity to try out my first Viking romance.

These are my own opinions below.

3 out of 5 stars

Teon hastily marries a very young Revna after their fathers agree to stop fighting and share the land. Teon blames Revna, his father, and her people for his mother's death and escapes for eight winters. During this, Revna is beloved by the King, and his sisters, and growing with the people. Revna is a Viking and Teon is a Saxon.

When Teon's father dies, he returns on the day of the funeral where he reunites with Revna. He came back to pay his respects and claim his right to be King. From there, it is an angsty, messy, and war-centered plotline where romance and sexual attraction arise between the estranged couple.

Revna deserved better than Teon. Teon was cruel to her for no good reason. I will go as far as to say that he was a xenophobe. He is older than Revna and he acts younger than her jumping from one mood to the next. Too much hot and cold. I don't know why she even liked him when the better romance would have been with Teon's most faithful knight and her. Revna was more helpful to his people than he was. She was overly nice to him more than what he deserved. The problem with enemies-to-lovers romance is sometimes the hatred goes on too long and this book does that. Lastly, I hated how he still called her heathen towards the end. Think of something new to say, would you, Teon?

On the positive side, I like the plotline of what happened between their parents and the war. Though I don't see how Teon was a good leader at all except the author said he was. I happen to find it very easy to read. I would be interested in reading more from her because I like the culture she added and her writing. Also liked her side characters, especially Bordon and EgesIic. Sex scenes were my kind of spice and highly enjoyable so I think the author can write a good scene and romance with the right characters.

Overall, it is a decent read if you want something where you like everyone else but the hero.

When I got an offer to review Sarah Rodi’s upcoming book, I was assured that it would be promising and indeed it is! After the hustle bustle of the work at school, I took the book and thoroughly enjoyed having it!

To begin with, Prince Teon and Revna were forced to wed by both fathers to prevent further war between heathen and Saxon. On the wedding night, Teon’s hatred towards Revna made him leave her for eight years. He then returns to claim his crown on the day of her father’s burial and discovered the little girl he married to has grown into a brave beautiful woman.

Yet when someone is going to take over the crown and starts the war, Teon and Revna have no alternative but to stay within the keep. Teon is a handsome big grumpy prince with fiery temperament for his Viking wife. On the contrary, Revna is too good to be with Teon but I was unable to deny that they match very well! Revna is brave, resourceful, too forgiving and compassionate. Despite Teon’s unfriendly treatment, she keeps on helping the Saxon people. Well, I loved how Teon can’t resist his growing sexual desire to Revna, and he begins to feel possessive when Revna touches one of his friends to treat the wound. There are lot of things that Teon has to conquer; his crown, his revenge, his anger, and his desire for his wife, and oh! They intimate relation is beyond spicy.

I became rather annoyed about Teon’s temperament, how he could be so cruel for the things Revna is unaware of but everything is worth the wait when mystery after mystery is unveiled. I thoroughly enjoyed and loved this book. It is emotionally powerful, thoroughly riveting with spicy scenes and so uplifting at the end. It is enemies-to-lovers, second chance at love, and marriage of convenience in one! Highly recommended for those who love those tropes! Thank you, Sarah Rodi, for the e-ARC which I voluntary reviewed.

DNF at 25%

I requested this book as an ARC, because I'd wanted to read a Viking romance for a while and this seemed like the perfect opportunity. The premise sounded amazing and I was really excited to read it.

However, sadly, I am DNF'ing this book at 25% for the following reasons:

My main gripe is that I am not connecting with the author's writing style. I feel like the writing style is somehow detached from what's happening, like we're observing it behind a thick glass and I'm not feeling what either of the characters are going through. So, I have trouble getting into the book. I tried, but I put it down and have no interest in picking it back up, mainly because of this.

Furthermore, I feel like a prologue would've done wonders for the pacing of the book. With the way it's written now, the scenes are being dragged down with history, world-building and old feelings, and it didn't work for me.

Something in the internal conflict of both main characters doesn't feel right to me, I'm not entirely sold on it.

Overall, I think that if I kept reading, it wouldn't become more than a 3 star rating (at best), because the above will just keep bothering me even if I push through.

Book: Second Chance with His Viking Wife
Author: Sarah Rodi
Length: 238 Pages
Publisher: Harlequin
Overall Rating: 5/5 Stars
Blog Rating: 5/5 Saltire Flags

This book is about a marriage of convenience to stop a violent and deadly war. The marriage is between Prince Teon and Revna who is the Viking Chief’s daughter. As this is a noble marriage however the Prince must leave immediately after the nuptials to fight in another violent war.

Now Teon has returned to claim his crown and marriage, but is shocked to see the love and respect his people have for the wife he had only needed as an ally. That is until their wedding night that never had happened becomes a reality where sparks blew and he realizes what he has missed from this special Viking wife and so much more from this incredible woman. Will it be enough for a HEA? Read and find out.

A new Harlequin author for me that I absolutely love! This is a riveting, fast-paced, romantic adventure that readers will love weaving true history with a fictional romance that will make readers swoon! Another Harlequin romance diving into the past. A book I highly recommend!

Sarah Rodi - Second Chance with his Viking Wife

Thank you so much Sarah Rodi for sending me a paperback copy of her latest book 'Second chance with his Viking wife' in exchange for an honest review.

Two historical fiction books in two days and I am very happy about it. After 8 years away Prince Teon is back to claim his throne, wife and respect from his people; to his surprise the people have grown to respect and love his heathen wife. I enjoyed this book so much, the way in which Revna thought for herself and her people gaining their trust and respect was very admirable and her fiestyness and unwilling to back down is a traight I love in female characters. Although this was a quick read; the hero was unreasonably cruel in my opinion :-(

Saxon Prince and Greenland maiden with this marriage of convenience. Revna is smart, powerful, kind, and just all around wonderful leading lady where Teon is out for revenge and fights the chemistry. There is a lot of miscommunication with this one but it works for the era and the plot very well. Loved the community and working through the danger. I really enjoyed this one by Rodi and enjoyed that we got not only Viking but also Saxon mix with this one.

Great Story!

I absolutely loved reading this one. Loving the characters and storyline so much. Except for Harold!! There was so much anger, doubt and then love. The fathers had an understanding to live in peace. Revna, Teon, Edlynne and Eldrida all seemed to have a second chance for their family. I like how the story ended. On to another new story. 🥰🥰🥰💜💜💜💜💜🥰🥰🥰
