This volume narrates the journey of two Franciscan priests and their travel companions as they sought and failed to find a route to California from Santa Fe, New Mexico in 1776. The author has distilled the narrative from examinations of the journals kept by the expedition and the knowledge he gained by physically tracing the group's 1700-mile route. A brief but highly readable account of an expedition that deserves to be better remembered than it has been. More details would have been nice, but this is a a good introduction to a great adventure of discovery and survival.
The author expounds upon the journal kept by 2 Spanish priest as they attempt to find a way to Monterrey from Santa Fe. They underestimate the distance and the terrain, ill prepared also for the weather, they are unsuccessful. The excursion does provide information on the interior of current day Colorado and Utah at a time when the United States was to even in existence.
