Françoise Sagan
249 books1,659 followersBorn Françoise Quoirez, Sagan grew up in a French Catholic, bourgeois family. She was an independent thinker and avid reader as a young girl, and upon failing her examinations for continuing at the Sorbonne, she became a writer.
She went to her family's home in the south of France and wrote her first novel, Bonjour Tristesse, at age 18. She submitted it to Editions Juillard in January 1954 and it was published that March. Later that year, She won the Prix des Critiques for Bonjour Tristesse.
She chose "Sagan" as her pen name because she liked the sound of it and also liked the reference to the Prince and Princesse de Sagan, 19th century Parisians, who are said to be the basis of some of Marcel Proust's characters.
She was known for her love of drinking, gambling, and fast driving. Her habit of driving fast was moderated after a serious car accident in 1957 involving her Aston Martin while she was living in Milly, France.
Sagan was twice married and divorced, and subsequently maintained several long-term lesbian relationships. First married in 1958 to Guy Schoeller, a publisher, they divorced in 1960, and she was then married to Robert James Westhoff, an American ceramicist and sculptor, from 1962 to 63. She had one son, Denis, from her second marriage.
She won the Prix de Monaco in 1984 in recognition of all of her work.

Bonjour Tristesse is Sagan's most famous book. But this is THE book. Creepy, funny, dark, weird. Such a short and easy read. But SO effective. This really is a gem!

Toliau tęsiu pažintį su Sagan, ir kuo toliau, tuo labiau ji man patinka. Labai lengvas, nerūpestingas, vietomis gal net ant vėjavaikiškumo ribos balansuojantis kūrinys, bet smagus, įtraukiantis ir mielas. Ir netikėkit anotacija, kuri bando įtikinti, kad "autorė išbandė jėgas detektyvo žanre". Tikrai čia ne detektyvas. Artimiausias žanras, kuris tiktų apibūdinti šitą knygą, būtų Holivudo auksinio periodo noir'as.

CAMP!!! What a delightfully melodramatic romp of a nihilistic Hollywood fever dream ménage a trois. This story was so over the top but written so coolly and with such beautiful restraint that I can’t help but want to read it again. It was seductive and vicious and gorgeously erotic in a way contemporary writers just simply can’t seem to reproduce. A stellar unsettling novella to read start to finish on a lazy beach afternoon.

Quite literally obsessed with this. Like what did I just read in the best possible way. Incisive and gossipy first-person narration, drama of the highest order, and a beating pulse of eroticism both lush and campy. Slay!

It was pouring down with rain in Cambridge this afternoon and there was no question of going outside so I went upstairs to my bookcase to make my selection. I had bought two Françoise Sagans in a second-hand bookshop months ago, having enjoyed Bonjour Tristesse and A Certain Smile so much a couple of years ago. Heaven knows why I took so long to return to her ! Sagan, and perhaps especially this book, is such a delightful combination of Daphne du Maurier and Iris Murdoch. Delightfully funny, filled with laissez faire French wisdom, and languorously glamorous. Offers something with pleasing depth; the existentialist currents of her novels substantiates Sartre’s approval of her.
I read this in a single sitting and had a marvellous time.

Entertaining read for my bus journey back to Glasgow but lacked the spark I expected from Sagan after how much I loved Bonjour Tristesse! Still a good book but much lighter emotionally even though it was objectively more gruesome lol.

I am not really sure what to make of this book. In some ways it was beautifully written and captivating, in other ways it left me unfulfilled. I wish it gave me more, it was too vague and posed moral quandaries without really pushing me too think. Great promise, but as much as I couldn't put it down, it left me disappointed.

A dark and horny Hollywood story

This is another case of a book finding me. Recently I was reading the fascinating Sagan, Paris 1954 and the author quoted the first paragraph of one of Sagan’s later books. But the year the book was set wasn’t mentioned. The book was De guerre lasse. Engagements of the Heart, 1986.
“From the month of May, the meadows were already bowing under the weight of summer. The tall grass, limp from the heat, was leaning over, drying out and splitting right down to the earth. Further on, above the pond, hazy wisps of vapour trailed in the evening air. And the house itself, with its wrinkled pink façade - the house with its upstairs shutters closed on some secret and its downstairs French windows staring wide-eyed at some surprise - seemed like an old lady who had nodded off on the brink of succumbing to the pressures of uncertainties.”
Immediately I was taken with this entrancing description and managed to buy the book cheaply. I opened it to find that the first sentence seemed to be an add-on. “The seasons, too, were harsh in the year 1942.” 1942? So, unlike most of Sagan’s novels not a contemporary setting and the second world war. A time I find particularly interesting.
The novel is really a menage a trois. Charles Sambrat is a wealthy businessman who has a factory, house and land somewhere in southern France away from the Germans. His childhood friend Jerome comes to visit, in actuality to hide out. Jerome brings Alice Fayatt, a woman he is obviously in love with but they appear to have a troubled relationship. He is part of the resistance and she an unwilling accomplice.
“He was already starting his investigation, thought Alice wearily. He was already beginning; could he not have waited for one more evening, just one evening away from all that? And a hundred jumpy, badly lit images passed in procession beneath her eyelids: doorways of seedy-looking hotels, dark streets, railway stations, short-stay rooms, scarcely unpacked suitcases - sad, dirty, anonymous images, sordid images, always with sharp angles, the images of the Resistance, in a word; and in this rounded meadow, beneath this vaulted sky, with the curve of the poplars over there, these images were all the more terrifying.”
Because of the threat of the Germans and Sagan’s skill as a writer this is a tense read. When finally Alice has her own mission, the result is strange but probably more like such a mission was in real life. Who will Alice decide to stay with? Engagements of the Heart has an unexpected but satisfying ending. My only criticism is that the novel was a little ponderous at times, but that is just this reader’s experience.

Immediately I was taken with this entrancing description and managed to buy the book cheaply. I opened it to find that the first sentence seemed to be an add-on. “The seasons, too, were harsh in the year 1942.” 1942? So, unlike most of Sagan’s novels not a contemporary setting and the second world war. A time I find particularly interesting.
The novel is really a menage a trois. Charles Sambrat is a wealthy businessman who has a factory, house and land somewhere in southern France away from the Germans. His childhood friend Jerome comes to visit, in actuality to hide out. Jerome brings Alice Fayatt, a woman he is obviously in love with but they appear to have a troubled relationship. He is part of the resistance and she an unwilling accomplice.
“He was already starting his investigation, thought Alice wearily. He was already beginning; could he not have waited for one more evening, just one evening away from all that? And a hundred jumpy, badly lit images passed in procession beneath her eyelids: doorways of seedy-looking hotels, dark streets, railway stations, short-stay rooms, scarcely unpacked suitcases - sad, dirty, anonymous images, sordid images, always with sharp angles, the images of the Resistance, in a word; and in this rounded meadow, beneath this vaulted sky, with the curve of the poplars over there, these images were all the more terrifying.”
Because of the threat of the Germans and Sagan’s skill as a writer this is a tense read. When finally Alice has her own mission, the result is strange but probably more like such a mission was in real life. Who will Alice decide to stay with? Engagements of the Heart has an unexpected but satisfying ending. My only criticism is that the novel was a little ponderous at times, but that is just this reader’s experience.

Наверно, это ужасно, когда для счастья нужно столь мало. Счастье начинает засасывать, и единственный способ от него избавиться – погрузиться в неврастению. Нас преследуют неприятности, гнетут проблемы, но вдруг, точно камень, брошенный из-за угла, или как солнечный луч, настигает счастье, и мы отступаем перед радостью бытия.
Саган всегда немного "здравствуй, грусти" и "смутной улыбки", но большей частью солнце в холодной воде. За то и любим. Феномен девицы из буржуазной, ничем не примечательной семьи, которая, провалив вступительные экзамены, потому что предпочитала пинать вола, вместо того, чтобы готовиться в ВУЗ, написала между делом книгу, и мгновенно прославилась-разбогатела-взлетела на социальном лифте к высотам, о каких никакая Сорбонна и мечтать не позволила бы.
Новая жизнь, веселая и интересная, где она была кумиром поколения, богемной штучкой, ниспровергала условности, то и дело становилась героиней алко- и наркоскандалов, попадала в аварии, оставаясь невредимой, была отчаянно азартной и немыслимо везучей (знаете, как стала владелицей замка? Поставила последние восемь франков восьмого августа в восемь утра на восьмерку в казино и сорвала банк, а через час подписывала купчую на замок за восемь миллионов). И умерла всеми оставленной в нищете. Ну так что ж, она пожила, по крайней мере.
Вот такая она, Франсуаза Саган и такая эта маленькая повесть о нежном убийце. Нет, в нормальной жизни нормальных людей ничего подобного не может быть, потому что не может быть никогда. Сорокапятилетние тетки, пережив кратковременный успех в качестве старлетки и потерпев фиаско, не возвращаются в Голливуд успешными сценаристками. И сорокалетние красавцы на "Ягуарах" последней модели за ними не ухаживают. И дивной красоты двадцатилетние мальчики не влюбляются в них с тем уровнем неотвратимой смертельности, какой делает чувство роковым.
Но это в нашей с вами жизни, у нее вполне могло быть и так. Хотя на самом деле "Ангел-хранитель" представляется мне таким травестированным, водевильным вариантом ее "Любите ли вы Брамса". Там тоже красивый юноша влюблялся в женщину много старше себя, да к тому же увязшую в токсичных отношениях с любовником, почти мужем. И так все непросто: ему нужна только она, а она думает об одиночестве, брошенности, оставленности, когда он начнет ею тяготиться; возвращается к своему прежнему хамоватому дружку, разбивает влюбленному мальчику сердце. Вот так бывает.
Но здесь и сейчас у нас возможность насладиться чистым беспримесным счастьем, когда в твою жизнь входит словно бы не человек даже, а явление. Оберегающее, опекающее, не позволяющее никому не только слова дурного о тебе сказать, даже взгляда неправильного бросить. Квинтэссенция идеи идеального сына, тем более привлекательная, что с пеленками, детскими болезнями и подростковыми психотравмами возиться не приходится - получаешь готового рыцаря без страха и упрека. Нежного, ласкового, любящего, заботливого, внимательного, понимающего, уютного как кот, да к тому же еще неплохо зарабатывающего.
А что убийца. Ну как-то так вышло, чего уж теперь. Парень-то он все равно хороший.

Since I've lost the track of the plot, regarding Wonderful Clouds, I'm going to reread the book during the week, before reviewing it. Instead, I'll give my opinion for this title and, I must say, it's a great deviation from her previous works. While her books showed us a way of loving someone through attraction, passion or care, this one is a great presentation of devotion and comfort around other person. It's a symbiotic relationship, where one can't live or function without the other, although it's necessary to be put under control. One may find security and care, while the other feels appreciated and protected from insults and rudely behavior. You may say it's a pact made of compromises, but successful ones (although not without a grain of a doubt). I appreciate such innovations and it shows the author's capabilities for other genres (during her long carer through decades), as this is a hybrid between romance and thriller. Can't wait to see what her later years will bring, since there are four more works to cover.

Another book from the 'free books' pile at my local library. One of those books where the story gets heated very quickly and u cant put it down, but it seems like another 'just a good story' type book. Interesting, short, sweet and written in a way my slow brain can comprehend. Definitely worth the time, almost unexpected ending but yea. A cool way to spend ur afternoon when the power is out or sth.

Не прочитати до 27 років жодного твору Франсуази Саган, і раптом «проковтнути» одразу три? З легкої руки @stary_lev, що зібрав під обкладинкою однієї книги одразу три романи письменниці, це стало можливим.
Зізнаюсь, до цього дня при згадуванні Саган я подумки проводила паралель із літературою типу бульварних романів. І хоча тематика в них схожа, бо все обертається навколо кохання, стосунків чоловіків із жінками (і жінок із жінками та чоловіків із чоловіками), проза Саган має шарм та певну інтелектуальну наповненість, яких годі й шукати в більшості жіночих романів.
Отже, три романи, три історії кохання. Відкриває книгу «Охоронець серця» і це, скажу я вам, дивна історія з такою інтригою, якої я давно не зустрічала. Сценаристка Дороті Сеймур вже немолода жінка, двічі розлучена, має надійного коханця Пола. І так би собі жила вона далі, якби не нещасний випадок, що знайомить її із загадковим молодиком Льюїсом. Охоплена ледь не материнським інстинктом, вона з подивом дізнається, що стала єдиним і найбільшим коханням хлопця. Все, більше про сюжет ні слова, але зауважу: після прочитання в мене на обличчі довго лишався вираз «що це було?», і довелось лізти в пошуковик із питанням «Що не так із Льюїсом?». І, знаєте, таких людей назбиралось багато, бо це один із найперших ключових запитів на «Охоронця серця». Зберігаю інтригу і переходжу до наступних історій.
У «Сигналі до капітуляції» та «Невиразній усмішці» йдеться про любовні квартети, що поєднали різних за віком і статусом коханців, і, як це буває у Саган, щастя у фіналі не бачити нікому із них. Тут і про утриманців (як жінку, так і чоловіка), і про світські інтриги, і про складні стосунки із родичами (а як інакше, коли дядько і племінник борються за увагу однієї двадцятирічної дівчини?). Скажу відверто, читати такі романи складно, коли ти сам не поділяєш позиції головних героїв, а надто - жінок, що дозволяють собі бути на утриманні, розмірковують лише про стосунки і дозволяють «захищати» себе чоловікам, бо жінка - істота слабка й потребує захисту.
