Wolfram Heckeroth, a retired pediatrician, is found dead in his country cabin. Wolfram had been tied to the radiator and left to die. Inspector Dühnfort is tasked with investigating the death and looks to Heckeroth's three children to understand the circumstances of Heckeroth's life. As Inspector Dühnfort investigates the murder he is confronted with untangling the complex dynamics of the family and the toxic relationship between Hackeroth and his children.

I actually really enjoyed this book, a solid 4.5 stars definitely. I liked the mystery and the build up, and though it wasn't that hard to guess who had been behind the murder the story line unfolded pretty well and kept me engaged. Usually I have a lot to complain about when I read but this was good and I don't have anything else to opine about. I would recommend it to anyone who likes mysteries.

“Dead calm” is the second installment in the “Kommissar Dühnfort” series and, while being a pretty decent European police procedural, I was expecting something more.

I love reading new crime series, specially if they’re set in in not your typical setting of UK or the US, but I, and this might be a pet peeve of mine, have to read them in order from the beginning of the series to really get to know the main character, his/her motivations, where he/she’s coming from...But with non English books that’s not always possible (I’ll never understand some publisher’s decisions of translating them out of order or translating just some of them). And that’s precisely what happened here. The fact that it’s book 2 in the series made it a bit hard to follow up Dühnfort’s personal and family matters, making it therefore harder for me to engage.

The mystery itself was not bad, although a times it was a bit convoluted (too many suspects, too many red-herrings). In some parts the pacing felt a bit clunky but that may have been more of a translation issue. Once the murderer was revealed the story still went on for another 10%, so I was hoping for another twist that never happened. You could consider the huge cliffhanger it ends up with like the final twist (although that would have worked much better with me if book 3 was translated into English 😒)

Police procedural that explores some dark family dynamics and, although it didn’t bring anything new to the crime lit world, made an entertaining enough read.

Dühnfort ile maceraya devam ediyoruz. İlk kitaba göre bu kitabı daha yavan buldum. Belli bir çevrede dönen olaylar zinciri ile çok şaşırtıcı olmayan bir son. Ayrıca açık uçlu bırakılmasını da anlayamadım.
Evinde ölü bulunan bir doktorun cinayetini araştırırlar. Susuzluk yüzünden korkunç bir şekilde ölen adamın cinayetini aydınlatmak için ellerinden geleni yaptılar. Dühnfort’u sevdim diyebilirim. Onunla ilgili bir klişe vardı, ona çok güldüm.
Kitabı ortalamanın altında buldum. Hep aynı çevrede soruşturulan bir cinayet yeterince ilgi çekici değildi. Kitabın ismiyle konu da alakasız.

I was excited to read Dead Calm not just because it sounded right up my street but because it would be my first crime novel set in Germany.  I am a big fan or Nordic Noir and crime fiction so wondered how this would compare.  In a nutshell – really well.
In many ways, it’s similar – it’s dark and gritty – though I have to say German life doesn’t seem quite as structured or controlled.  There is much more eating, drinking and seeming to enjoy life here.  Not too much though because there is murder afoot and a murderer to be found.
In this case the victim is a respected and semi-retired paediatrician Dr. Heckeroth, who is found rather gruesomely in his lakeside cabin by his son, Albert. Albert was the apple of his eye and chosen child – with the other two (Caroline and Berstram) being ignored for the most part.  It’s an interesting and potentially explosive family dynamic which plays out as the investigation progresses and which I think Lohing uses to good effect to bring the story and the characters to life.
They also do a brilliant job with the detective’s, led by Dühnfort and supported by Gina and Alois.  Dühnfort and Gina especially are really well drawn, with enough of their personal life to make me like and care for them.  Much like my Monday read (Mercy Killing) this was very much a team effort.  Dühnfort relies on his instinct a lot but doesn’t go off on his own, working with others to get results.  I like this and it is a good change for me and my recent reads where detectives tend to go off on their own.
The story itself is full of twists and turns and I wasn’t sure till close to the end who did it (I was right – yay!). It isn’t the fastest of paced books though.  Instead, I would say it was steady.  I never lost interest and I never got bored but I didn’t feel the overwhelming urge I have with other books to stay up late or keep turning pages.  This might not be a surprise as it runs to nearly 450 pages.
I thought it was well written and well translated.  I liked getting to know each character, none of which I didn’t like to a degree (even the bad apples had redeeming features), and learning a little more about life in Munich, which sounds lovely despite the subject matter.  I am not sure if this is part of a series or the first in one, but I’ll definitely be looking out for more.  Liked it a lot!

The first actual person you meet is Babs, who the story revolves around. Inge Lȫhnig introduces Albert who is her husband. In the prolog you meet him as a young boy. He has a brother Bertram who blackmails Albert. And he has a sister Caroline, who's really on the outside looking in. The story starts off by Heckeroth's murder. Dũhnfort (the lead detective) makes the assumption that Bertram was the key murderer. Come to find out he was only interested in Heckeroth's life. It goes back .and forth whose the killer in Dũhnfort's mind. It resolves itself when Bertram is killed and Albert confronts Babs at the cabin where Heckeroth was killed. This story has many characters that could have killed Heckeroth and Bertram and it leaves you knowing who the killer is and why they killed them. I liked her style of writing and I recommend reading Dead Calm.

Hat mir besser gefallen als der Vorgänger, ist aber auch bloß wieder ein mittelmäßiger Krimi, der ziemlich vorhersehbar ist und auch nur deshalb bis zum Schluss funktioniert, weil die eine oder andere unwahrscheinlich naive Person eingebaut wurde.

When the body of a retired paediatrician is found dead in his holiday cabin, all first signs point towards a burglary gone wrong. But Detective Konstantin Dühnfort has his doubts. Wolfram Heckeroth suffered an agonising demise, slowly dying from thirst and heat exhaustion whilst bound to a radiator with his own belts, unable to free himself. The nature of the crime appears so unnecessarily cruel that it doesn’t sit right with Dühnfort. As he looks deeper into the man’s past and talks to his family, it soon becomes apparent that the role of respectful doctor has been a facade, hiding a dark side that may have made the good doctor many enemies. It seems that there have been many victims of his cruelty who would have a motive for murder – including his own children.

I love discovering new interesting crime series from around the world, and welcomed the opportunity to read Dead Calm, which is set in Germany. And even though it took me a little while to get into the story, since all the members of the Heckeroth family are just so unlikeable, this well constructed mystery slowly but gradually drew me in and kept me captivated. Detective Dühnfort is an engaging main protagonist who really intrigued me, and with a cliff-hanger ending I know that this will not be the last in the series for me. I was happy to see that there are already six books out in the Kommisar Dühnfort series (of which Dead Calm is the 2nd), which hints at a lot of reading pleasure yet to come!

Dead Calm is told from the different viewpoints of various protagonists, including some of the victim’s adult children and their spouses, as well as Detective Dühnfort himself. Not having read the previous book in the series, I loved discovering little snippets from Dühnfort’s own private life, which fleshed out this character into a sympathetic investigator who is longing for love and a family of his own. He would like nothing more than to settle down and marry his lover Agnes, but the woman’s traumatic past always gets in the way of happiness. Dühnfort balanced out the thoroughly unlikeable characters of the Heckeroth family, whose actions must be seen in the context of the whole story to be able to muster up some empathy. Exploring the dark side of family dynamics and love gone wrong, the story carries a sinister undertone that sets a somewhat disturbing scene, reminiscent of the stark honesty of Nordic noir. I loved the way the investigation slowly unfolded, from Dühnfort’s initial impression of the victim:

“An old man who had a good relationship with his children. One son came up for a barbecue, the other to fix a drain – a solid family. And now, abruptly, it was missing its anchor.”

To an altogether different picture, of a narcissist who took advantage of women, cheated on his wife and played his own children off against one another. Of his many victims, who finally took their revenge?

Set in Schwabing, Germany, Dead Calm is a well-constructed murder mystery based on complex family dynamics and carrying the sinister and somewhat disturbing undertones of hidden secrets and love gone wrong. Not afraid to expose the darkest corners of the human psyche, it is all the more disturbing in that it features everyday, ordinary people and respected pillars of society. Realistically drawn and somewhat dark and disturbing in its honesty, it should appeal to lovers of Nordic noir looking for a new crime series with a sympathetic investigator in a European setting.

Darum geht es:
In seinem Wochenendhaus wird der pensionierte Kinderarzt Wolfram Heckeroth tot aufgefunden. An eine Heizung gefesselt ist er offenbar qualvoll verdurstet. Kommissar Dühnfort und sein Team versuchen Licht ins Dunkel zu bringen. War es ein Raubmord oder hat der Mörder etwas mit der dunklen Vergangenheit des Toten zu tun?

Ich sage dazu:
Kommissar Dühnfort wird mir immer sympathischer. Auch wenn er bei mir diesmal einen eher melancholischen Eindruck hinterlassen hat. Ist aber auch kein Wunder, da sein Privatleben gerade alles andere als einfach ist.

Gefallen hat mir auch, dass man in diesem Teil der Reihe Dühnforts Kollegin Gina etwas besser kennen lernt.

Neben dem Privaten gab es aber natürlich auch noch einen Mordfall aufzuklären.
Die Spur führt zu einem Familiengeheimnis, das sogar die Kinder des Ermordeten im Erwachsenenalter fest im Griff hält. Die Charaktere rund um den Fall waren mir größtenteils eher unsympathisch. Allen voran Babs, die Schwiegertochter des Ermordeten. Bei ihr konnte ich nämlich so gar nicht verstehen, warum sie sich von ihrem Mann derartig vorführen und gängeln lässt. Aber sei's drum. Sympathie hin, Antipathie her ist es der Autorin jedenfalls wieder gelungen, die Spannung in diesem Buch bis ins Unerträgliche zu steigern.

Auch diesen 2. Fall der Kommissar Dühnfort-Reihe habe ich wieder mit den Krimi-Mädels auf buchgesichter.de gemeinsam gelesen. Mit viel Spaß haben wir ermittelt und wild spekuliert. Dem Täter sind wir so recht früh auf die Spur gekommen und selbst das Motiv haben wir zumindest ansatzweise erraten.

Das hat das Lesevergnügen jedoch in keinster Weise geschmälert. Im Gegenteil. Wir wollten schließlich alle wissen, ob wir richtig liegen. Gebremst haben uns dabei eigentlich nur die selbst auferlegten Lesepausen, da wir das Buch in Abschnitte aufgeteilt hatten, die dann jeweils besprochen wurden. So manch eine hat es dann auch nicht ausgehalten und einfach weiter gelesen. Keine Disziplin, die Damen! :D

Was Dühnforts Privatleben angeht, hat uns auch das in der Leserunde zu einigen Vermutungen bewogen. Ich habe ja schon eine Idee, wie es weiter gehen könnte und bin natürlich schon gespannt darauf, ob ich Recht habe.

Fazit:
Von mir eine klare Leseempfehlung. Inge Löhnig hat einen klasse Schreibstil, der das Buch zu einem wahren Pageturner werden lässt.

Konstantin Dühnfort ermittelt wieder. In seinem Wochenendhaus am Starnberger See wird die Leiche des ehemaligen Kinderarztes Wolfram Heckeroth gefunden. Der Mann war mit Gürteln an einen Heizkörper gefesselt und ist offenbar langsam verdurstet. Zu Beginn glaubt man an einen Raubüberfall, aber Dühnfort hat so seine Zweifel, ob die Lösung so einfach ist, und beginnt, sich das Umfeld des Toten genauer anzuschauen.

Seine drei Kinder - einer der Söhne hat seine Praxis übernommen, der andere ist erfolgloser Architekt und die Tochter karrierebewusste Marketingleiterin einer Edel-Chocolaterie - könnten verschiedener kaum sein und pflegten offenbar auch sehr unterschiedlich gute Beziehungen zu ihrem Vater. Gibt es womöglich dunkle Flecken in der Familiengeschichte, die zu einer Eskalation geführt haben könnten? Oder hatte Heckeroth andere Geheimnisse?

Der zweite Fall für Dühnfort und sein Team ist gute, solide Krimi-Kost mit einem Klecks Lokalkolorit. Das Privatleben des Kommissars nimmt genügend Raum ein, um ihm eine gewisse Tiefe als Person zu verleihen, überlagert aber nicht die Ermittlungen (und umschifft Klischee-Klippen recht erfolgreich). Die Nebenfiguren, insbesondere Heckeroths Hinterbliebene, sind ebenfalls komplex und glaubwürdig gezeichnet, auch wenn es hier nicht ganz gelingt, Klischees zu vermeiden.

Spannend war's auch, allerdings fand ich die Lösung relativ vorhersehbar und hatte den Täter schon ziemlich früh entlarvt. Das hatte Inge Löhnig im ersten Band für meine Begriffe besser hinbekommen.

Was am Rande in ihren Büchern immer Spaß macht: Dühnfort beim Kochen "zuzuschauen". Der Kerl ist ein Genießer!

In Munich, the body of a retired pediatrician, who lost his wife only 6 months back, is found in his country house. He had three children. Albert, who looked up to him and also a pediatrician; Bertram, the black sheep of the family; and Caroline, a successful executive. All of them are shocked by the news. Whether you imagine who the killer is or not, or if detective Duhnfort manages to solve the crime, for me these were secondary issues. The most fascinating part of the book is how the author manages to unveil what this family is really like. As the work progresses, you feel avid to learn more of them. I loved feeling like a peeping Tom, learning the deepest and most unimaginable secrets, as any other family certainly has. Additionally, the author has a very good command of the language, creating a high level freely flowing narration. I had never heard of her, but I feel so lucky for finding her. A book I really enjoyed and kept me awake more than one night.

Und noch ein deutscher Kriminalroman, der mir ein wenig Zeit im Urlaub vertrieb: Inge Löhnigs In Weißer Stille. Von der eigentlichen Geschichte her fand ich den Roman recht passabel, der Schreibstil ist professionell, vielleicht zum Teil ein wenig ausschweifend. Genrezuordnung und Klappentext deuten auf einen spannenden Krimi hin (klar, hier würde niemand etwas von einer langweiligen Balade schreiben). Leider entspricht der Inhalt nur wage dem Klappentext, laut dem Kommissar Dühnfort in einem düsteren Mordfall ermittelt.

Ja, es wird ermittelt, soweit mal zum Thema “Kriminalroman”. Allerdings lesen sich die von dem Kripo-Team um Dühnfort durchgeführten Untersuchungen eher als Beiwerk zu einem Drama um eine gewaltsame Familientragödie. Nicht nur, dass die Story für mich komplett ohne die Kriminalisten ausgekommen wäre (bzw. als Randbemerkungen zur Story). Auch wird die Handlung durch unbedeutende Nebenfäden aufgebläht, die mit gutem Willen zur Darstellung der Charaktere dienen.

Mit einer etwas anderen Erzählweise hätte dies ein guter Thriller werden können, so bleibt für mich nur ein etwas verwursteter Roman mit kriminellem und, beigemischtem, kriminalistischem Treiben über. Schade.

Komiser Döhnfort serisinin ikinci kitabıdır. Kitap alıcı bir anlatıma sahip. Dışarıdan bakıldığında mükemmel gibi gözüken bir ailenin cinayet işledikten, sırlar ortaya çıkmaya başladıktan sonra aslında öyle olmadığını görüyoruz. Mükemmelliğe önem veren bir babanın çocuklarını yetiştirme şekli ve yıllar sonda ortaya çıkan sırlar kitabın okunmasını sağlıyor.

Katili tahmin etmek zor olmasa da karakterlerin kendi bakış açılarından olayları yorumlama şekillerini okumak fena değildi. Kısa sürede bitirdim.

Read this because it was one of the few German books my library has. I enjoyed the writing style and the meticulous way of exploring how actual crimes are solved. Characters are likable and I am trying to read all books in the series.

Diese Fortsetzung von der Dühnfort Reihe war genauso gut und spannend geschrieben wie Teil 1. Absoluter Ratespaß, wenn man gerne miträtselt, wer der Mörder ist und was die Motive sein könnten.

Konstatin Dühnfort wird an einen Tatort gerufen, dort deutet alles auf Raubmord hin. Doch Dühnfort kann dies nicht so ganz glauben, denn es bleibt ein flaues Gefühl in der Magengegend. Die grausamen Umstände, die zum Tod des angesehenen, pensionierten Kinderarztes Wolfram Heckeroth führten deuten darauf hin, dass viel mehr hinter dieser Sache steckt als auf den ersten Blick erkennbar. Heckeroth hatte erst vor kurzer Zeit seine Frau verloren und lebte jetzt alleine. Nach und nach kommt Dühnfort der ganzen Sache auf die Spur, jedoch bleibt der Fall lange undurchsichtig. Heckeroth hat drei gänzlich unterschiedliche Kinder. Ein schwarzes Schaf der Familie, Betram, eine Tochter Caroline, die sich von ihrem Vater nie beachtet gefühlt hat und einen Sohn Albert, der immer versuchte seinem Vater alles recht zu machen. Selbst wenn dabei seine eigene Familie auf der Strecke blieb. Durch Zufall stößt Dühnfort auf einen Ordner mit Fotos von jungen Frauen in einer nicht natürlichen Position. Es stellt sich heraus, dass der alte Heckeroth ein großer Manipulator war und immer genau das erreichte was er wollte. Dühnfort und seine Kollegen müssen tief in den Familiengeheimnissen der Heckeroths graben, um den Fall zu lösen.

Meinung

Inga Löhnig schafft mit in weisser Stille einen spannenden Krimi. Immer wieder glaubte ich den Mörder bereits zu kennen, dann kam wieder ein neues Detail hinzu und mein Tatverdächtiger wurde erneut entlastet. Immer wieder taucht der Leser in eine kurze Erinnerung der Kinder an ihren Vater ab und es kommen neue Dinge an die Oberfläche, die sich bis heute im Leben der Kinder zeigen. Es zeigt wie viel Macht Eltern über ihre Kinder haben und wie diese Macht das Leben auch bereits erwachsener Kinder noch prägen kann. Zum Ende hin sind alle Fragen schlüssig erklärt und der es zeigt sich, dass der Täter eigentlich doch die ganze Zeit irgendwie verdächtig war und dennoch die Zweifel immer wieder ausgeräumt wurden.

Auch Dühnforts Privatleben kommt nicht zu kurz und nimmt eine unerwartete Wendung.

Fazit

Ein packender, spannender Kriminalfall mit viel tiefgründiger Familiengeschichte und belastenden Geheimnissen, die den Leser mitfiebern lassen.

Ich bin Mitglied im Buchclub von MexxBooks und habe 'In weißer Stille' gelesen.

'In weißer Stille' ist der zweite Fall für Kommissar Dühnfort und sein Team. Dühnfort muss seine Wohnung nun doch nicht an die Tochter des Vermieters abtreten und lebt weiterhin allein in München. Nach wie vor wünscht er sich, mit Agnes, (die er im ersten Fall kennen gelernt hat) eine Beziehung aufzubauen, sie zu heiraten und Kinder mit ihr zu haben. Für Agnes ist das aber nach wie vor undenkbar, so dass Dühnfort eine Entscheidung treffen muss, wie es in seinem Privatleben weiter gehen soll. Und nun sieht er Gina, deren Zuneigung für ihn schon im ersten Band deutlich wurde, zunehmend mit anderen Augen'

Gleichzeitig bekommt Dühnforts Team einen neuen Fall: Ein Mann ist tot in seinem Wochenendhaus aufgefunden worden, an den Heizkörper gebunden und verdurstet. Dühnfort ahnt, dass mehr dahinter steckt als bloßer Raubmord. Im Haus ist nicht eingebrochen worden - Kommt der Mörder aus der Familie?

Wie schon im ersten Buch wechselt auch im zweiten Fall regelmäßig die Perspektive. Diesmal sind es die Gedanken und Gefühle der Frau sowie der Schwester eines der Söhne des Mordopfers, an denen der Leser teilhat. So wird nach und nach ' durch die Ermittlungen und die Gedanken der beiden Frauen ' deutlich, wie es wirklich innerhalb der Arztfamilie aussieht, die nach außen über Jahrzehnte die perfekte Fassade gewahrt hat.

Inge Lönig ist mit 'In weißer Stille' ein überzeugender Nachfolger zu 'Der Sünde Sold' gelungen. Auch diesmal habe ich gerne gelesen, was Kommissar Dühnfort sich allabendlich kocht und wie er durch München streift und dabei die Nordsee ganz furchtbar vermisst. Auch ist ihr eine spannende Handlung gelungen, in der man zwar ahnt, wer der Täter sein könnte, dann aber doch gespannt auf die große Auflösung ist. Empfehlenswert!

Dead Calm by Inge Lohnig is the second book a new-to-me series; I'm not certain how many have been translated, but I certainly want to pick up more, including the first in the series. (The German title of this book is In White Silence.)

An elderly man is found murdered at his lakeside cabin.
Chief Commissioner Konstantin Duhnfort and his team investigate the murder, and while robbery may have been the motive, tying an elderly man to a radiator and leaving him to die of thirst seems excessively cruel.

As events unfold, Duhnfort refuses to take things at face-value. Robbery or murder? And just how complicated are the threads he begins to unravel?

The developing investigation reveals a dark and manipulative side to the deceased pediatrician. His influence on his three children still dominates their lives: the favored son and heir, the neglected and rebellious son, and the ignored and invisible daughter. Only Albert, the favored son, has ever gained any affection or praise from the father, and all of three still deal with the consequences of the man's controlling personality.

A complex tale of family dynamics, Dead Calm examines the effects of the narcissistic father (with some, if not all, of the traits of a sociopath) on his children . Outwardly charming and concerned about superficial respectability, Dr. Heckenroth inner darkness casts a long shadow.

While the murderer is easily recognized early on, the intricacies of the plot kept me engaged throughout. I hope for more translations of this series soon.

Seventy-two year old victim retired pediatrician Wolfram Heckeroth is found tied up in the bathroom of his summer cabin. He was apparently left to die of thirst. Albert, the eldest of his children found him and called the police. Konstantin “Tino” Duhnfort is the inspector and his team responds to the call.

While Tino and his team are busy interviewing the children of Wolfram and those who knew the victim, the family is busy blaming one-another for the death. The family secrets come out in an explosive manner. The murderer comes as a surprise, but not so surprising as to be a complete shock.

This is a very well written, plotted and translated book. There were a couple of difficult transitions, but they weren’t too distracting. The book is both suspenseful and fast paced. I truly enjoyed it. This is my first Inge Lohnig novel, but it won’t be my last. I immediately went to Amazon to look up others of her books.

Ich habe eine Leseprobe bei Vorablesen.de gelesen und ein Rezensionsexemplar gewonnen.

Das was die Leseprobe versprochen hatte hat das Buch gehalten. Ich habe es fast in einem Zug durchgelesen. Der Prolog, der bei der Leseprobe für Verwirrung gesorgt hat, wir im laufe der Geschichte aufgelost.

Aber von Anfang an. Je mehr man ließt umsomehr erkennt man die Familienverhältnisse des Opfers. Bis zur Mitte des Buches, dann erkennt man das man gar nichts wußte aber auch die beteiligten Personen erkennen die Zusammehänge erst im Laufe der Geschichte. Schön sind auch die "Nebenrollen" gezeichnet, ob es die Kripobeamtin Gina ist und Ihre "schrille" WG-Familie, Frau Kiendel die Putzfrau, Mio, Alois oder Marc.

Die Geschichte nimmt ab der Mitte eine Wendung in der Sicht des Betrachters, man ahnt wer der Mörder sein wird, will es aber dennoch nicht warhaben. Obwohl der Anfang der Geschichte, die Auffindung der halb verwesten Leiche, recht eckelig ist, ist der Rest des Roman zum Glück recht "blutarm". Ein paar Spitzer gibt es noch bei der Auffindung der 2. Leiche und auch bei der Beschreibung der pronographischen Bildersammlung gibt es noch ein paar unschöne Details. Das ist das Schöne an diesem Roman, das es er ohne die "BlockBuster"Elemente auskommt, es passiert alles irgendwie "nebenan" und das macht den Thrillfaktor aus.



Das einzige was mir nicht gefallen hat sind die letzten 2 Seiten, ich finde sie unnötig weil sie dem Leser das HappyEnd etwas vermiesen obwohl sie den Leser in einer gewissen Spannung zurücklassen.....

I would like to thank Netgalley and Bonnier Zaffre for an advance copy of Dead Calm, a police procedural set in and around Munich.

Inspector Konstantin "Tino" Dühnfort and his team, Gina and Alois, are called out to a suspicious death. Wolfram Heckeroth, a retired paediatrician, is found dead and strapped to a radiator in his country cabin. With little to go on the team are initially stumped but as the doctor's life is unpeeled several lines of enquiry open up.

The novel is told from three points of view, Tino, Caroline, Heckeroth's daughter and Babs, his daughter-in-law. I'm not normally a fan of this approach but I felt it worked very well here as it provides a wider perspective of the dysfunctionality of the Heckeroth family, their secrets and interactions, which is a bit of a nightmare but all too plausible.

The plot is relatively standard, police hunt murderer and all sorts of family secrets are revealed, not the chiller I was expecting and my enjoyment came from the gradual revelation of Wolfram Heckeroth's ghastly personality and his impact on his family, both now and previously.

The novel spends a fair amount of time on Tino's failing relationship with Agnes but as they have only been together for 4 months and we learn so little about her it seems a bit pointless and unrealistic. Padding. I also found the last few paragraphs extremely ambiguous and again fairly pointless when the case was wrapped up.

While I may quibble over some of the content I enjoyed Dead Calm and can recommend it as a good read.

Der pensionierte Kinderarzt Heckeroth wird in seinem Wochenendhaus tot aufgefunden, wo er an die Heizung gefesselt wurde und qualvoll verdurstete. Seine nach außen scheinbar perfekte und glückliche Familie entpuppt sich nach und nach als ein Abgrund von Greueln, sodass Kommissar Dühnfort früh eine Reihe von möglichen Motiven vorliegen hat. Es zeichnet sich bald ein Hauptverdächtiger ab, doch als ein zweiter Toter aufgefunden wird und eine Zeugenaussage sich als hinfällig beweist, steht Dühnfort mit seinem Team fast wieder am Anfang.

Passionierte Krimileserinnen und -leser werden vermutlich recht schnell wissen, in welcher Richtung die Lösung zu suchen ist, allzu offensichtlich sind die ersten rund 50 Seiten des Buches. Durch eine Vielzahl von weiteren, durchaus überraschenden Spuren gelingt es der Autorin zwar, eine Reihe neuer Verdächtiger ins Spiel zu bringen, doch die anfängliche Vermutung wird bald zur Gewissheit. Die einzelnen Personen werden anschaulich beschrieben, wenn auch ihr Verhalten meist allzu vorhersehbar erscheint.

Alles in allem ein passabler unterhaltsamer Krimi, der sich mühelos an einem Wochenende durchlesen lässt.

Not very surprising as a whodunit, but with very well-developed characters. The action is important, but the characters' feelings and internal thoughts are prioritized, without being overly melodramatic. Detective Dühnfort is investigating the death of a retired pediatrician. It seems like a robbery gone wrong, but the few clues available to him make no sense. He figures out that the victim's family is full of dark secrets. We also get a glimpse of said family. They are privileged, but not necessarily happy. I believe that this is the second volume in this series, so it aludes to past events that are not completely elaborated upon. This doesn't matter, since the story can be understood on its own. The twists will not be too surprising for mystery readers, but it's the way the story unspools that makes this read interesting. Not so much what's happening but how the characters are reacting to it. I'm curious to see where Dühnfort goes next.

It started really good immediately with Wolfram’s death and was followed by an investigation that is full of surprising twist and turn. I didn’t find it hard to guess who the culprit is, and mystery lovers will pick up on it easily, but it doesn’t take away my interest in the story. I still have to wonder what’s the reason behind it and everything in between is just as gripping. The secrets are surprising and scandalous and it is intriguing to know how the characters will react to those secrets and how it will play out on the people involved. The plot may be pretty common but it will still hold your interest and will keep you reading until the end.

This book kept me interested through out the reading. It is a whodunit, but I figured out early on who it could be. It was still entertaining and I would definitely read another book from this author. Inspector Duhnfort was an interesting character who only want to someday be a husband and father. Inspector Duhnfort was called to investigate an elderly retired doctor's death. During his investigation we get to meet the suspects which consists of the the man children and past affairs.. We learn a lot about the man 's unhappy family and Duhnfort life as well. There were some parts, where I think there was just too much detail on what the characters were doing. Just know Duhnfort loves to cook and eat.

Das war mein erstes Buch um Kommissar Dühnfort, und obwohl es das zweite der Reihe ist, bin ich sehr gut hineingekommen. Die Geschichte wird sehr spannend erzählt, der Schreibstil ist angenehm flüssig. Die Personen sind für mich alle sehr glaubwürdig dargestellt, was sicher auch daran liegt, dass jeder eine Geschichte, ein eigenes Leben hat, was mir immer gut gefällt. Es war mir zwar schon recht bald klar, wer der Täter ist, doch das hat meinem Lesevergnügen keinen Abbruch getan. Ich werde so schnell wie möglich den ersten Band der Reihe lesen.

Why read? Ich hatte Lust auf einen Krimi.
Why swapped? Der erste Band war nicht greifbar, also habe ich den zweiten ertauscht.

I enjoyed reading this book. Although I figured out pretty early whodunit, it still was an interesting trip to the end. Barbara makes you want to scream with her naivety. She's looking for signs of infidelity, after she's caught husband in the act. I still look forward to other books by this author.
