Our cartoon with the broadest appeal. In January 2007, FoxTrot became a Sunday only cartoon. This is a collection of Sundays since then.
FoxTrot Sundaes is a cool treat that follows the amusingly chaotic lives of the Fox family--Jason, Peter, Paige, and their parents, Roger and Andy--since FoxTrot became a Sunday-only comic strip.
In this anthology, Amend gathers all the color Sunday comic strips since FoxTrot went weekly and delivers a concentrated dose of his irreverent take on teen and family life. It's a concoction so consistently fresh and funny that in 2007 the National Cartoonists Society presented Bill Amend with its prestigious Reuben Award.
With FoxTrot Sundaes , fans get a full serving of the hits-close-to-home humor that is the hallmark of the strip.
Bill Amend is an American cartoonist, best known for his comic strip FoxTrot. Born as William J. C. Amend III, Amend attended high school in Burlingame, California where he was a cartoonist on his school newspaper. Amend is an Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America. He attended Amherst College, where he drew comics for the college paper. He majored in physics and graduated in 1984. After a short time in the animation business, Amend decided to pursue a cartooning career and signed on with Universal Press Syndicate. FoxTrot first appeared on April 10, 1988. Amend currently lives in the midwestern United States with his wife and two children, a boy and girl.
This collection features just over two years’ worth of Sunday strips from the comic strip FoxTrot. Originally released in 2010, this was the first collection since cartoonist Bill Amend semi-retired, only releasing new strips on Sundays. This is the first collection since he made that switch, and it has all new material.
The jokes may be familiar with the fans of the strip since the characters really haven’t changed, but that doesn’t make them any less fun. I actually haven’t read the strip much in recent years, and it was great reconnection with these old friends. Even if I saw a punch line coming, I would laugh, and I smiled my entire way through the book. A few of the strips may be dated since they refer to then current events, but that’s a minor issue for me.
Okay, here we go, the first book of Sunday-only comic strips. The fare is mostly what you'd expect. It's basically the same Sunday strips that have always appeared but now without the weekly story arcs to develop the characters and provide background for the Sunday punchlines.
In that way, this book is something less than the ones that came before it. Don't get me wrong, it's funny, there are some great comics in here, but we're officially past the point of the comic strip really evolving. The strips in this book don't really utilize the new Sunday-only format an any special way, but at least nothing seems to have been lost in the transition.
I would complain, but honestly, I'm just happy we're still getting FoxTrot comics when Bill presumably could have ended things entirely.
We are big fans of Bill Amend's Foxtrot comic and we really enjoyed reading this book of Sunday strips. We chuckled at the pop culture references, especially the "World of Warquest" mentions, since our girls and my hubby love that game.
Overall, it's a fun, fast read and our girls have demanded that I put more of these books on hold at our local library.
fox trot is one of like the first comic strips that i ever bought the book for....along with calvin and hobbes....it's a bummer that amend is only doing a sunday strip now, but it's still a funny comic...
Foxtrot Sundaes: A Foxtrot Collection by Bill Amend (Andrews-McMeel Publishing LLC 2010)(741.5973). This volume features only Sunday strips and is as funny and entertaining as always. My rating: 7/10; finished 10/25/11.
Really fun, especially since the last time I'd read any FoxTrot was a while ago. If you're bored and want some laughs, I recommend it. I recommend any of the FoxTrot books, actually. :)
Definitely strong on the geeky-factor, but still a lot of fun. I've loved Foxtrot for years so a collection like this is like eating candy. A total treat.
