Jayakanthan
129 books677 followersDhandapani Jeyakanthan, otherwise known as 'JK' among his friends and comrades, is a multi-dimensional personality, well known in the literary circle as a prolific writer, commentator, pamphleteer, film-maker and critic. He has won acclaim for wielding his pen against social injustices and economic inequality. Jeyakanthan was born in a family of agriculturists in Manjakuppam, a suburb of Cuddalore of the erstwhile Madras Presidency. Brought up by his mother and maternal uncles, he got interested in politics at a young age as his uncles were actively involved in it. Jeyakanthan dropped himself out of school after completing fifth grade, as he thought studies would hinder his political activism.
In 1946, he left for Chennai in search of livelihood, where he performed odd jobs, before ending up as a compositor in the printing press of Communist Party of India (CPI). His association with the CPI instilled the ideas of the movement, where he got to accompany leaders such as P. Jeevanandham, Baladandayutham and S. Ramakrishnan. The leaders of the party encouraged him to write. After graduating to an active member of the party, he got to learn about topics pertaining to world literature, culture, politics, economics and journalism. It was during this time, Jeyakanthan started writing for pro-communist magazines. Over the next few years, he established himself as one of the top-most writers in the party. His early works were first published in the party newspaper Janasakthi, and soon other magazines like Sarasvathi, Thamarai, Santhi, Manithan, Sakthi and Samaran published his works. His early works focused on the plight of slum-dwellers who were settled in and around the party office.
Jeyakanthan was married to his cousin. The couple had two daughters and a son. Jeyakanthan wrote his first short story for a Tamil magazine titled Sowbakiyavathi, which got it published in 1953. Following early success, Jeyakanthan started writing for mainstream magazines such as Ananda Vikatan, Kumudam and Dinamani Kadir, who published a number of short stories, particularly in the 1960s. In 1964, Jayakanthan entered films by co-producing and directing a venture titled Unnaipol Oruvan, based on his novel.
His writings reflect his views on the morals, ethics and the societal norms as a whole. His writings are vivid portrayals of life and relationships, with all the intricacies and beauty of reality, and with a profound love for humanity. He is one among the few of the original writers of the Tamil Literature. He is a man of insight, pride and scholarship whose writings expressed with unparalleled courage and utmost honesty speaks for all the generations to come. A winner of Sahitya Acadamy Award and Fellowship, Jnanpita Award, Soviet Land Nehru Award, the Russian Federation's Order of Friendship and the Padma Bhushan.

இந்த புதினம் ஒரு மனசக்ட்சியின் குரல். ஒவ்வொரு நல்லவனுக்குலேயும் ஒரு கேட்ட,அருவருப்பு தக்க குணமும். ஒவ்வொரு கேட்டவனுக்குளையும் ஒரு நல்ல குணாதிசயம், பண்பும் இருக்கு என்று எடுத்துக்கட்டும் நவல் இது.
இந்த நவல்ல வரும் கதாபாத்திரங்கள்,கட்சிகள் அனைத்தும் நாம் வாழ்வில் நாம் கண்டிப்பாக கடந்து சென்ற,சந்திக்ககூடிய மனிதர்களும் சம்பவங்களுமே.
அம்மணமா இருக்குற ஊர்ல துணிவுடுதினவள் கதைதன் இந்த கங்காவின் கதை.

August 2, 2022இந்த புத்தகத்தில் இடம்பெற்றுள்ள கதாபாத்திரங்களின் சிக்கலான தன்மையையும் அவர்களின் சிந்தனை செயல்முறையையும் புரிந்து கொள்ள நான் இந்த நாவலை மீண்டும் ஒருமுறை படிக்க வேண்டியிருக்கிறது. எனினும், மனித இனம் இதுவரை கண்டிராத ஒரு அரிய இலக்கியம் இது என்னும் கருத்தில் நான் உறுதியாக இருக்கிறேன். இவ்வழகான இலக்கியத்தை படைக்க நினைத்த துணிச்சலுக்காக ஜெயகாந்தன் அவர்களுக்கு எனது பாராட்டுக்கள்.

கங்கா எனும் 17 வயது பெண்ணுக்கு உணர்ச்சிவசத்தால் ஏற்பட்ட விரும்பதகாத சம்பவம்., அது நடந்து 12 வருடங்களுக்கு பின், அதை நிகழ்த்தியவனுடனான சந்திப்பும் அதன் தொடர்ச்சியான அவர்களின் வாழ்க்கையை பற்றியுமான கதை.
அதனை கங்கா, பிரபு என்கிற பிரபாகர், வெங்கு மாமா, கனகம், மஞ்சு போன்ற பிரதான கதைமாந்தர்களின் ஊடான உரையாடல்களால், இந்நாவலை மிக நேர்த்தியாக படைத்திருக்கிறார், திரு ஜெயகாந்தன்!
1966ல் ‘அக்னிபிரவேசம்’ எனும் சிறுகதையாக எழுதியதை, விஸ்தீரணமாக நாவல் வடிவில் இயற்றியுள்ளார்.
மனித மனம் எவ்வளவு அதள பாதாள ஆழமாகவும், பிரபஞ்ச விஸ்தாரமாகவும் யோசிக்கும் என்பதை அறிவோம்., ஆனால் அதனை பட்டவர்த்தனமாக, உள்ளபடியே எழுத்தில் படம்படித்து காட்டியதில், திரு ஜெயகாந்தன் அவர்கள் ஜித்து!
அவ்வளவு ரசமான கதைக்கரு கிடையாது என்றாலும், தற்போதைய தலைமுறையினருக்கு, கதைக்கருவை, என்ன இப்படி ‘ஜவ்வாய் இழுத்து’ எழுதியிருக்கிறார் எனத் தோன்றும். ஆனால், இங்கு பார்க்கவேண்டியது, கங்காவின் மனவோட்டத்தை., அதாவது, உலகை நோக்கிய அவளது பார்வை, அவள் எப்படி சிந்திக்கிறாள், எவ்வாறு சூழ்நிலைகளையும் மனிதர்களையும் கையாள்கிறாள், பிரபுவுக்கும் அவளுக்குமான 'உரையாடல் உறவு' இப்படி பல விசயங்கள், இந்நாவலை நடத்தி செல்கிறது.

Deservedly an award winner! A beautiful handling of a complex relationship with complex characters.
Ganga, a brahmin girl's life changes one day in college when she gets raped/seduced by a random person in a car. 15 years later, her family is resigned to the fact that she can't get married and she is staying in fear of lecherous uncles and bus romeos.
When a story written by an author tells her exact story, she meets him and he leads her to the man, Prabhu, in the car.
Unlike a dramatic story of revenge or marriage - she gets into a 'pure' relationship with Prabhu - a married man with his own tragedy and addictions. Ganga strikes a close friendship with Prabhu's daughter and estranges her mother. Prabhu, wants her to get married and move on while she finds herself slowly falling in love with him. The complex relationships of strong people with grey is engaging.
Other characters like her uncle who thinks she is easy or her brother who throws her out after the incident are part of the society even today.
Today it may seem to be over-reacting what with pre-marital sex not being such a taboo. But the stigma attached to the victim from an orthodox family is really a bold book for the time.

Great book.
The epilogue of this book was shattering, of course, but right from the start, this was a literary phenomenon Tamils should be proud about. Jayakanthan has expressed his gall in questioning the principles men have constructed around them in the name of the society and how lives of people yearning for independence from those trifles dissolve into oblivion. Forty years have passed since this book was written but people have not changed much yet from the characters JK envisioned in this work, in my opinion. This very fact vaporized the huge span between the times when this book was written and when I read it.
My suggestion for any reader of this book would be to enjoy it and stop not with that but to try to shed off the prejudice we associate with the Gangas of the world.

படித்து முடிப்பதற்கு முன்பே பெரிதும் ஆச்சரியமூட்டியது 50 வருடங்களுக்கு முன்பு எழுதப்பட்ட நாவல் எப்படி இன்றும் காலத்தால் கடந்து போகாமல் இருக்கிறது என்பதே.. இப்பொழுதே பெரிதும் தாக்கத்தை ஏற்படுத்திய நாவல், வெளிவந்த காலத்தில் மிக முற்போக்காக இருந்திருக்கும் என்பதில் சந்தேகமே இல்லை..
தனது இளம் வயதிலே பாலியல்வன்புனர்வுக்கு ஆளாகும் கங்காவிற்கு இந்த சமுதாயமும்,அவளது சொந்தங்களும் என்ன மாதிரியான அனுபவங்களை தருகிறது, அவளது விருப்பத்திற்கான மதிப்பு என்னவாக இருக்கிறது, பெண் என்றால் எப்படி இருக்கவேண்டும் என்ற கட்டுப்பாடுகளும் சமுதாய எதிர்பார்ப்பும் கங்காவின் வாழ்க்கையை தீமானிக்கிறதா இல்ல கங்காவின் வாழ்க்கையை அவளே தீமானிக்கிறாளா? காலம் மனிதர்களை எப்படி மாற்றுகிறது என்பதே சில நேரங்களில் சில மனிதர்களின் கதைவரைவு!

I was too young when I watched the movie long ago, when I didn't understand just anything about it, and all I knew was it was boring.
Picked the book recently, thanks to Storytel for their recent Tamil books collection. Firstly the narrators were too good in keeping the readers/listeners glued.
The story is very ahead of it's time. Not that there is a particular period when things started happening. Things happened all the time, only that few had the courage to write boldly about it, and then it gets talked about like people had a sudden realization.
Not sure of what the author had in his mind, but there were several things that left me thinking deeply. How someone completely turned another person's life topsy turvy, imagining, yes imagining it was consensual. And after all this manages to live his life like a changed person happily distancing away after creating another havoc.
The character of Ganga was so beautifully etched, right from her introduction when she starts her ranting while commuting in the local bus. Her feelings of guilt and shame, and the way she keeps herself protected, (every woman have that sense don't they? Being careful... all the time. But in her case it is naturally even more), and as the story progresses she emerges slowly from all these, there is a more confident and stronger person emerging but alas!
The end was like a moth coming out of a cocoon. Was that how strong women end up? What is the message here I wonder? Of course not everything must have a happy ending, but could have been different.

The first time I got introduced to Jeyakanthan is through his short story 'Naan Irukiren'(the title roughly translates to - I am alive). It is also the only literary work that made me cry. Sure, I have cried while watching movies. But crying after reading a few pages of text?
'Sila Nerangalil Sila Manithargal'(the title roughly translates to - Some people sometimes) is a novel that talks about the relationship that develops between a rape victim and her rapist. If this novel had come out now, people would have branded Jeyakanthan as a rapist. But, in reality, the book talks about a lot of women empowerment. Through Ganga, Jeyakanthan navigates you through all the sexual harassment that women go through in their day-to-day life. From the people on public transport to her own uncle, she is surrounded by people who see her just as a bundle of flesh. She gets disowned by her family after getting raped. Mind you - the novel is set in the 1960s. If it were today, the girl would be stopped from school/college, slut-shamed and married off after getting thrashed by her own family for not being 'careful'-even in urban India!!! So basically nothing much has changed. But this not the theme of the novel. No, Jeyakanthan is not the author that preaches. He shows you different people around Ganga on a grayscale. In India, the river Ganga is considered divine; people revere it and pray to it all the while polluting it. Jeykanthan is subtly smiling under his mustache. 'You can own the flower but its beauty is owned by all' he says.
Jeyakanthan goes crazy in the afterword of this novel. Not even in my wildest dream have I imagined such an ending to the story. Highly recommend for everyone particularly in this period of time. And oh, there is a movie adaptation of the same. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D-ZuJ... Laxmi did a very good job of bringing out Ganga as one would imagine while reading the novel. Especially, don't miss that scene towards the climax where she calls Prabhu.

என்னை ஜெயகாந்தனிடம் முதன்முதலில் அறிமுகப்படுத்தியது அவரின் 'நான் இருக்கிறேன்' சிறுகதை. அதை படித்துவிட்டு அதிலிருந்து மீளமுடியாமல் தவித்த நாட்கள் இன்றும் நினைவில் இருக்கின்றன. அதே போன்றொரு தாக்கத்தை நான் 'சில நேரங்களில் சில மனிதர்கள்'-இல் உணர்கிறேன்.
இந்த நாவல் வன்புணர்வு செய்யப்பட்ட ஒரு பெண்ணிற்கும் வன்புணர்வு செய்த ஆணுக்கும் இடையிலே உருவாகும் உறவினை கருவாக கொண்டது. இக்காலத்தில் இந்த நாவல் வெளிவந்திருந்தால் ஜெயகாந்தனின் உருவபொம்மைகள் எரிக்கப்பட்டிருக்கும். ஆனால் இந்த நாவல் பேசும் பெண்ணியம் 50 ஆண்டுகளுக்குப் பின்னரும் பொருத்தமாகவே இருக்கின்றது. பிரபலமானவை என்பதற்காக அல்லாமல் சரியான புரிதலுடன் பேசப்படும் சமத்துவ கோட்பாடுகள் காலம் தாண்டி நிற்கும் என்பதற்கு இந்த புனைவு ஒரு சான்று. கங்கை நதியை ஒரு சாரார் புனிதபடுத்துகிறார்கள். மற்றொருர் சாரார் கழிவிடமாக பார்க்கிறார்கள். 'கங்கா' என பெயர் வைத்து மீசைக்குப் பின்னால் சிரிக்கிறார் ஜெயகாந்தன். கங்காவின் பரிணாமம் கதை முழுவதும் மெல்ல மெல்ல நிகழ்கிறது என்றாலும் 'பின்கதை'-இல் சாமி ஆடி இருக்கின்றார் ஜெயகாந்தன். ஒரு வகையில் அந்த பின்கதை தான் அதிகமான தாக்கத்தை ஏற்படுத்துகிறது.

'Sila Nerangalil Sila Manithargal'(the title roughly translates to - Some people sometimes) is a novel that talks about the relationship that develops between a rape victim and her rapist. If this novel had come out now, people would have branded Jeyakanthan as a rapist. But, in reality, the book talks about a lot of women empowerment. Through Ganga, Jeyakanthan navigates you through all the sexual harassment that women go through in their day-to-day life. From the people on public transport to her own uncle, she is surrounded by people who see her just as a bundle of flesh. She gets disowned by her family after getting raped. Mind you - the novel is set in the 1960s. If it were today, the girl would be stopped from school/college, slut-shamed and married off after getting thrashed by her own family for not being 'careful'-even in urban India!!! So basically nothing much has changed. But this not the theme of the novel. No, Jeyakanthan is not the author that preaches. He shows you different people around Ganga on a grayscale. In India, the river Ganga is considered divine; people revere it and pray to it all the while polluting it. Jeykanthan is subtly smiling under his mustache. 'You can own the flower but its beauty is owned by all' he says.
Jeyakanthan goes crazy in the afterword of this novel. Not even in my wildest dream have I imagined such an ending to the story. Highly recommend for everyone particularly in this period of time. Especially, don't miss that scene towards the climax where she calls Prabhu.

முதன்முறையாக பலபேர் சொல்லி இப்போது தான் படிக்க முடிந்தது...
அக்னி பிரவேசம் கதை மற்றும் அதன் முடிவு பல பேரால் ஏற்று கொள்ள முடியாத போதும், என்னை ஈர்த்தது. இப்போதும் என்னால் அந்த முடிவு சரியா தவறா என்று சொல்ல முடியவில்லை.. ஆனால் பிடித்து இருந்தது.
அது போல தான் , சில நேரங்களில் சில மனிதர்கள்
கங்கா பிரபு, பத்மா , என்று எண்ணற்ற கதாபாத்திரங்கள் வந்தாலும்.... மிகவும் கவர்ந்தது, இன்றிய பெண்களின் மன போக்கு, தெளிவு , எதையும் எதார்த்தமாக எடுத்துக்கொள்ளும் பக்குவம் என்று ஒரு சில நிமிடங்களில் வந்து போகும் மஞ்சு தான்.

This book is beyond words! Jayakanthan killed it!
கங்கா உருக்கொண்டு 50 ஆண்டுகள் ஆனா போதும், அவள் இன்னும் எதிர்காலத்தின் முன்னோக்கிய பெண்ணாகவே எனக்குத் தெரிகிறாள். 2023-யில் வாசிக்கும் எனக்கே அவளது பாத்திரம் புரிதலுக்கு அப்பாற்பட்டதாகத் தோன்றும் பொழுது, ஆசிரியர் 50 ஆண்டுகள் முன்பே இவளைக் முழுக்க முழுக்க கற்பனை கொண்டு உருவாக்கி இருக்கிறார் என்றெண்ணித் திகைக்கிறேன்! இது எவ்வாறு சாத்தியம்!
கதையின் ஒரு ஒரு பாத்திரமாகவே நாம் மாறும் அளவிற்கு கனக்கச்சிதமாகச் சித்தரித்திருக்கிறார் ஆசிரியர். அவர்களின் குணாதிசயங்களும், அதன் விவரிப்புகளும் அவ்வளவு மேல் நிலை.
I've never read a better book/narration where a person's depth of thoughts and each character's thoughts over the same situation are explained in a better way. The clarity with which Ganga talks, the theories that Prabhu puts forth, and the mindset that Manju has are all brilliant! There are so many things that I could relate to Ganga and yet so many that I couldn't. I guess that is the beauty of this book! :) There were times when I stopped reading, looked up at the sky, and slowly disgested the perception/theory/information. I cannot stress enough how beautifully it was written! Now I understand how important reading "Agni Pravesam" was before SNSM.
In spite of how complex the topic is itself, the author has gone up & beyond in breaking it down and actually educating the audience on how such complex things can be perceived differently. There is so much to talk about in this book that I'm literally struggling for words. I accept that I've failed in doing justice to the book with my review. That is how epic this book is! This is a beauty in itself!
It is a disappointment that there are only 5 stars to rate this book. It is definitely more than anything that you will ever imagine! Easily tops my best reads of 2023 and is definitely on my re-read list.

இவ்வளவு நாள் இந்த தலைசிறந்த படைப்பை எப்படி படிக்காமலிருந்தேன்? 1970-களில் வெளிவந்த இந்த நாவல் இப்போது படித்தாலும் படிப்பவர்களால் சம்பந்தப்படுத்தி பார்த்துக்கொள்ள முடியும். ஜெயகாந்தன் எதிர்காலத்தை தொலைநோக்கியில் பார்த்து எழுதியது போலவே எனக்கு தோன்றியது. முடிவு சிலருக்கு பிடிக்காமலிருக்கலாம் ஆனால் கதாபாத்திரம் செல்லும் வழியை வைத்தே நம்மால் யூகிக்கமுடியும் இதுதான் முடிவு என்று ஆனால் அதை ஏற்க மனம் ஏன்தான் மறுக்கிறதோ..

சந்தேகமே இல்லாமல்,ஒரு மிகத்துணிவான புத்தகம். ஒரு மனதின் எண்ண ஓட்டங்களை இத்தனை தெளிவாக, ஆழமான வார்த்தைகைளால் எப்படி எழுத முடிகிறது என்பது பெரும் வியப்பு. கதை முழுவதும் நெட்டித் தெறிப்பது ஆரம்பப் பள்ளிக் கல்வியை பாதியில் விட்ட எழுத்தாளரின் ஆங்கிலம், சென்னை தமிழ், பிராமண தமிழ் ஆகியவற்றின் ஆளுமையும் புலமையும் தான்.
கங்கா ஒரு முன்மாதிரியான பெண் என்றோ, ஒரு பாதி வாழ்கையில் துன்பமே வரினும் மீதி வாழ்க்கை இன்பமாக இருக்கும் என்றோ, அறிந்தும் தவறு செய்யாதவர்கள் ஏதேனும் ஒரு நற்பயனை அடைவர் என்பன மாதிரியான ��ரு நல்லூக்கத்தை தரவில்லை இப்புதினம்.
ஒரு துர்வாழ்க்கையும், நல்வாழ்க்கையும் சந்தித்துக் கொண்ட ஒரே காரணத்தால் இடம் மாறுவது எளிதில் கிரகிக்க முடியாத ஒன்று.. ஆனால் நம்மில் சிலரின் விதி அவ்வாறு தான் என்று கொஞ்சம் பொறுத்து, யோசித்து தான் ஏற்றுக் கொள்ள முடிகின்றது.
ஒரு சிறுகதையில் ஏற்பட்ட சர்ச்சைகளுக்கு பதில் கூறுவதாக எழுதப்பட்ட இந்த நாவல், ஒரு பெண்ணுக்கு நடந்த அக்கிரமத்தையும் அதனுடைய பாதிப்புகளையும் அழுத்தமாக விவரிக்கும் இந்த நாவல், இறுதியில் அப்பெண்ணின் ஸ்தரத்தையாவது பறிக்காமல் முடிந்திருக்கலாம் என்பது என் தாழ்மையான ஆற்றாமை.

1970-ல் எழுதப்பட்ட சாகித்ய அகடமி (?) விருதுப்பெற்ற நாவல், 2022-ல் என் கைகளில் 4 நாட்கள் தவழ்ந்திட்டது ஓர் குழந்தை போல். ஆம், அப்படித்தான் தோன்றுகிறது. குழந்தையின் தன்மைகள் பலவாயினும், அது பெரியோர்க்கெல்லாம் (வயதில் மட்டுமே) உணர்த்தும் ஓர் ‘மா’விடயம் எது தெரியுமா? நிகழ்காலத்தில் வாழ்வது (being in the present time).
என் தோழியின் 2 வயது மகன். அலைபேசியில், அவன் கரம் நீட்டி, அதரம் மீட்டி உதிர்க்கும் மென்னகையில் நாம் கரைந்து உறைந்திருந்தாலும், அவன் அடுத்த வினாடியை நோக்கி நகர்ந்து அருகில் இருக்கும் அவன் விருப்பங்களில் குவிந்திடுவான். ஒரு வகையில், வாழ்க்கைக்கான பாடமது.
இதில் எழுத்தாளர் முன்னுரையில் சொல்லியிருப்பது போல, “ வாழ்க்கை அவ்வளவு வசதியாக நமக்கு பிடித்த இடத்தில் பிடித்த மாதிரி போய் நின்று விடுவதில்லை”.
மேலும், ‘எந்த எந்தப் பொருள்களின் மேல் விருப்பம் இல்லாதவனாய் விலகுகிறானோ அவன் அந்த அந்த பொருள்களால் துன்பப்படமாட்டான்’ என்பது எவ்வளவு சத்தியம். வள்ளுவரின் வல்லமையை வாய் பிளந்து பிரமிக்கிறேன்.
“யாதனின் யாதனின் நீங்கியான் நோதல்
அதனின் அதனின் இலன்”.
ஒரு வகையில் இக்கதை சொல்லும் எதார்த்தம் இதுதானோ என்று தோன்றுகிறது.
அவள், அவள் தாயை நெருங்கி, நடந்த விருப்ப விபத்துக்காய் சலுகை கேட்கையில், அடைக்கலம் புகுகையில், மனது வலியில் கட்டி அணைத்துக்கொள்ள வரும் குழந்தையை உதறித்தள்ளியவளாய் அவள் தாய் இருப்பதுவே, அக்காலக்கட்டத்தில் நடப்பதாய் நகரும் கதை களத்தில் எனக்கு ஆச்சர்யமாய் தோன்றிய ஒன்று.
அக்னி பிரவேசம் கதையில் வந்த தாயை கண்டு ஆச்சர்யம் கொள்ளத் தேவையில்லை என்றே தோன்றுகிறது. அந்த அரவணைப்பும், சமூகத்துடன் ஒன்றி வாழ்வதற்கான வழிகளை, நல்லது-கெட்டது என்று பிரித்து உணர்த்தும் தோழமை உறவுடனும் அவளை வழி நடத்தியிருந்தால், இந்நாவல் பிறந்திருக்க வாய்ப்பில்லையோ என்னவோ?
அதனால்தான் 12b படத்தில் வரும் பஸ்ஸுல ஏறின கதை, பஸ்ஸ விட்ட கதை போல, ஒரு அழகான முடிவுக்கொடுத்த சிறுகதையில், காற்புள்ளி வைத்து இந்த ‘கோலத்தை’ காட்டினாரோ?
இந்த கதையின் முடிவு எனக்கு பிடித்திருக்கா,பிடிக்கலையா? என்னை பொறுத்தவரை இக்கதையில் முடிவென்று ஒன்று காட்டியதாய் தோன்றவில்லை. கதையின் நாயகி தன் துன்பத்தை(விருப்பத்தை) விட்டு விலக்கிவிடப்பட்டதால், தன்னிலையின் அடுத்த கட்டமாய் எப்படி மாறுகிறாள் என்பதோடு முற்றுப்பெற்றிருப்பதாய் மட்டுமே காட்டப்பட்டிருக்கிறது.
இப்போது, இந்த வரியை எழுதும்போது யோசிக்கையில், ஆசிரியர் மறுபடியும் காற்புள்ளி வைத்துவிட்டுப் போயிருப்பதாகவே தோன்றுகிறது. அவர் விட்டுச்சென்ற இடத்திலிருந்து, இன்னும் கங்காவை எப்படி வேண்டுமானாலும் அலைக்கழிக்கலாம்/பயணப்படுத்தலாம் என்றே எண்ணுகிறேன்.
ஒரு வேளை கங்காவின் வாழ்க்கை இப்படியும் இருந்திருக்கலாமோ என்ற எண்ணத்தின் நீட்சிதான், கே.பி-யின் ஒரு சில திரைப்படங்களோ/கதாப்பாத்திரங்களோ? (கல்கி, மன்மத லீலை)
இது சரி-தவறு, பிடித்திருக்கு-பிடிக்கவில்லை என்ற கட்டத்துக்குள் அடங்கவியலாதது. ஏனெனில் - சில நேரங்களில் சில மனிதர்கள்…!

அவள், அவள் தாயை நெருங்கி, நடந்த விருப்ப விபத்துக்காய் சலுகை கேட்கையில், அடைக்கலம் புகுகையில், மனது வலியில் கட்டி அணைத்துக்கொள்ள வரும் குழந்தையை உதறித்தள்ளியவளாய் அவள் தாய் இருப்பதுவே, அக்காலக்கட்டத்தில் நடப்பதாய் நகரும் கதை களத்தில் எனக்கு ஆச்சர்யமாய் தோன்றிய ஒன்று.
அக்னி பிரவேசம் கதையில் வந்த தாயை கண்டு ஆச்சர்யம் கொள்ளத் தேவையில்லை என்றே தோன்றுகிறது. அந்த அரவணைப்பும், சமூகத்துடன் ஒன்றி வாழ்வதற்கான வழிகளை, நல்லது-கெட்டது என்று பிரித்து உணர்த்தும் தோழமை உறவுடனும் அவளை வழி நடத்தியிருந்தால், இந்நாவல் பிறந்திருக்க வாய்ப்பில்லையோ என்னவோ?
அதனால்தான் 12b படத்தில் வரும் பஸ்ஸுல ஏறின கதை, பஸ்ஸ விட்ட கதை போல, ஒரு அழகான முடிவுக்கொடுத்த சிறுகதையில், காற்புள்ளி வைத்து இந்த ‘கோலத்தை’ காட்டினாரோ?
இந்த கதையின் முடிவு எனக்கு பிடித்திருக்கா,பிடிக்கலையா? என்னை பொறுத்தவரை இக்கதையில் முடிவென்று ஒன்று காட்டியதாய் தோன்றவில்லை. கதையின் நாயகி தன் துன்பத்தை(விருப்பத்தை) விட்டு விலக்கிவிடப்பட்டதால், தன்னிலையின் அடுத்த கட்டமாய் எப்படி மாறுகிறாள் என்பதோடு முற்றுப்பெற்றிருப்பதாய் மட்டுமே காட்டப்பட்டிருக்கிறது.
இப்போது, இந்த வரியை எழுதும்போது யோசிக்கையில், ஆசிரியர் மறுபடியும் காற்புள்ளி வைத்துவிட்டுப் போயிருப்பதாகவே தோன்றுகிறது. அவர் விட்டுச்சென்ற இடத்திலிருந்து, இன்னும் கங்காவை எப்படி வேண்டுமானாலும் அலைக்கழிக்கலாம்/பயணப்படுத்தலாம் என்றே எண்ணுகிறேன்.
ஒரு வேளை கங்காவின் வாழ்க்கை இப்படியும் இருந்திருக்கலாமோ என்ற எண்ணத்தின் நீட்சிதான், கே.பி-யின் ஒரு சில திரைப்படங்களோ/கதாப்பாத்திரங்களோ? (கல்கி, மன்மத லீலை)
இது சரி-தவறு, பிடித்திருக்கு-பிடிக்கவில்லை என்ற கட்டத்துக்குள் அடங்கவியலாதது. ஏனெனில் - சில நேரங்களில் சில மனிதர்கள்…!

தெரிந்தோ தெரியாமலோ பாலியல் ரீதியான பாதிப்பிற்கு ஒரு பெண் உள்ளாகும்போது அந்த பெண்ணிற்கு மற்ற அனைத்தையும் விட முதல் தேவை தனது குடும்பத்தினரின் அரவணைப்பும் ஆதரவும்தான் அது கங்காவிற்கு கிடைக்கவில்லை மாறாக அவளையே குற்றவாளி ஆக்குகிறார்கள் அதனால் அவள் தனது குடும்பத்தினர் மீது கோபம் கொள்கிறாள்.
கங்காவை ஒருவன் இருமுறை ஏமாற்றுகிறான் முதல் முறை வேண்டுமென்றே மறுமுறை அவள் நன்மைக்காக அவன் மீதும் அவள் கோபம் கொள்கிறாள்.
தன்னை போக பொருளாக பார்க்கும் தன் நடத்தையை , குணத்தை சந்தேகிக்கும் அவளது மாமாவின் மீதும் இந்த சமூகத்தின் மீதும் கோபம் கொள்கிறாள்.
இறுதியில் அத்தனை கோபங்களையும் காட்ட இந்த சமூகம் பெண்ணிற்கு என்று வகுத்து வைத்த விதிகளை, நடத்தைகளை தனது செயல்களின் மூலம் மீறுகிறாள். குடிக்கிறாள் , புகைகிறாள் , பல ஆண்களுடன் தவறாக பழகுகிறாள் கங்காவின் இந்த முடிவை ஏற்றுகொள்ள சற்று சிரமமாக இருக்கிறது.
பொழுதுபோக்கு, பெண்கள், குடி , சூதாட்டம் என வாழ்க்கையின் பெரும் பகுதியை கழித்த பிரபு இறுதியில் வெறுமையை உணர்ந்து வாழ்க்கையை வெறுத்து மணிதனுக்கு இருக்க வேண்டிய லட்சியத்தின் முக்கியதுவத்தை உணர்ந்து நமக்கும் உணர்த்துகிறான். சிறு வயதில் அதிக பணத்தை கொடுப்பதால் எப்படி சிறுவர்கள் கெடுகிறார்கள் என்பதும் பிரபு உணர்த்தும் வாழ்க்கை பாடம்.

Ganga, A young girl post college is waiting for her bus. It’s raining heavily. The bus doesn’t come. But a young man, a complete stranger in his shiny new car comes by and offers to drop her. She gets in. She is awestruck by all the luxury she is seeing and experiencing. He goes to a lonely place with the rains still pouring. The man makes a move on the girl. She consents. But later she regrets and feels violated. Do you call this rape or not? This situation of grey consent is what sets up the entire premise of the book. To add to the complexity 12 years later the girl goes to find this guy again. This book is about how Ganga’s world turns upside down after that incident, how she tries to reclaim her life under her own terms and the consequences she faces for not conforming to society’s definition of a good woman.
This novel deals with multiple sensitive topics including Consent, gender, caste and deals with all of them with such grace. This novel was written in 1972 and the best part is that it will stand the test of time.
The author tries to expose the double standards of how our society deals with women who don’t conform to its ideals through the character of Ganga. For ex Ganga’s life is completely turned upside down because she came and confessed about what she did. She was then always made to feel worthless. She completely gives up on the idea of marriage. Meanwhile Prabhu, the man in the car - his life just went on without this incident having any impact on him. When she meets him he is married and has a daughter. Both of them were involved in the incident but only one person’s life changed and why?
The moral shade of the characters portrayed is very grey and not exactly black or white. Take the character of the uncle. After Ganga was thrown out of the house, he takes her in and sponsors her education. Gives her the confidence to live in this world with all those accusations. But given Ganga’s consent during that incident he judges her character and begins to hope that Ganga might be okay with him making moves on her. Through this character the author also shows how a woman’s consent to man before marriage makes men believe that she might consent for every man.
At the end of the day this book at its heart is a deep character study of Ganga. It deals with her loneliness, her questioning her own self worth. Her dysfunctional relationship with her mother. Loss of trust in humanity in general. Not because of the incident itself but because she was punished for confessing about this incident to her family. Ganga slowly falling in love with Prabhu with her not knowing whether it’s an act of rebellion or if it’s her low self worth that she thinks she won’t be able to find love elsewhere. The book does not give you an answer and leaves all of these issues open ended.
This book was an eye opener in the fact that the vernacular has so many stories to tell. The fact that this book is highly recommended also gives an impression of how such a discourse is possible in Tamil literary circle. I can only say this book has opened the gates towards Tamil literature for me. Would highly recommend this book to anyone looking to start with Tamil fiction.

பெண்ணின் உளவியலையும், சமூகத்தால் அவள் வாழ்வு தினந்தோறும் சிதைவதையும் மிக எதார்த்தமாகவும், அதே போல் பூசி மெழுகாமல் உண்மையாகவும் எழுதப்பட்டிருக்கும் ஒரு கதை. ஏதோ ஒரு வகையில், ஒவ்வொரு பெண்ணும் கங்காவாகத்தான் வாழ்கிறாள்.

The last 20 pages of this book was shattering, Didn't expect that kind of end. Still it remains one of the best book I have ever read.
