David Gerald Hessayon was a British author and botanist of Cypriot descent who is known for a best-selling series of paperback gardening manuals known as the "Expert Guides" under his title Dr. D. G. Hessayon. The series started in 1958 with Be Your Own Gardening Expert and in 2008 it celebrated its 50th anniversary and the 50 millionth copy in print. They have become the best selling gardening books in history.
I’ve had this book a long time. I don’t usually write in my books, but I highlighted and made notes in this copy when I was first learning about gardening and planting bulbs. It’s a really useful reference, with the majority of the text devoted to an alphabetical listing by Latin name of bulbs, corms, tubers, rhizomes, etc.
The profiles include planting depth and when to plant. Color illustrations and photos throughout. This doesn’t give a lot of detail on specific varieties, but I find on-line retailers are a better source for that, as you can see what’s actually available (and buy them!) I find most garden centers no longer carry bulbs. There’s a limited selection at big box retailers like Lowe’s and Home Depot, but for something more unique I like ordering from Brent and Becky’s Bulbs on line.
Verdict: Definitely a keeper, a great garden reference with sentimental value.
