About the author

Sujatha was the allonym of the Tamil author S. Rangarajan, Author of over 100 novels, 250 short stories, ten books on science, ten stage plays, and a slim volume of poems. He was one of the most popular authors in Tamil literature, and a regular contributor to topical columns in Tamil periodicals such as Ananda Vikatan, Kumudam and Kalki. He had a wide readership, and served for a brief period as the editor of Kumudam, and has also written screenplays and dialogues for several Tamil movies.

As an engineer, he supervised the design and production of the electronic voting machine (EVM) during his tenure at Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), a machine which is currently used in elections throughout India. As an author he inspired many authors, including Balakumaran, Madhan.

Move over GenerativeAI - meet the OG who came up with "downloading" almost 30 years back. This is one of those books that scare you like crazy given, in hindsight from when it was written, it's very much possible.

Maya joins a research firm where her sister used to work. Things are weird from day 1 with extensive tests, endless forms and inappropriate bosses. There are two scientists with seemingly contrasting means and are on their quest for nobel prize in research. And yet, she is reassured by her sister in USA that things are ok, to trust one of them - until she finds out way too much.

Enter Ganesh and Vasanth after almost 60% of the book is done. Surprisingly, the book becomes more improbable after they come in with bullets missing, surviving knife wounds and stupid villains in car chases.

Immortalizing a human being by downloading the core of the person into another body is not new in sci-fi. However, written in 2000s when VLSI, cryogenics were in nascent stage and someone connecting the dots in a real world. Amazing idea - execution too filmy.

அதற்கு சுமார் 28 ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்னரே சுஜாதா இந்த புத்தகத்தில் downloading என்ற முறைப்படி மனித மூளையில் ஒரு சிப் பதித்து மனித மூளையை ஒரு பிரதி எடுத்து இயந்திரத்தில் கொடுத்து ஒரு மனிதனை மரணம் இல்லாதவனாக மாற்றும் நிகழ் கால பிரம்மாக்கள் பற்றின கதை எழுதியுள்ளார்.

ஒருவர் மூளையில் இருக்கும் தகவலை பிரதி எடுப்பது, இறந்த ஒருவரின் மூளையில் இருக்கும் தகவலை இன்னொருவர் மூளைக்கு மாற்றும் அறிவியல் என சுஜாதா தனது வழக்கமான அறிவியல் மூளையை த்ரில்லர் கதை களமாக எழுதி இருக்கிறார். இரண்டாம் பாதியில் கணேஷ் வசந்தின் வருகை பின் புலப்படும் உண்மைகள் சஸ்பென்ஸ் நகைச்சுவை என கலக்கி இருப்பார் சுஜாதா.

வழக்கமாக சுஜாதா நாவலுக்கு கூறும் அதே வரி... சுமார் 30 வருடங்களுக்கு முன் இப்படி சிந்தித்த அந்த மூளைக்கு ஒரு சபாஷ்....

Don DeLillo's 2016 novel Zero K is about immortalization of a person by cryogenic preservation of her body - which is stored only to be brought into life at an advanced age when technology has sufficiently advanced to enable such an act. This novel written in 1991 takes two smarter steps forward and aims to immortalize a person by merely preserving her memories and downloading those memories into another, preferably a younger specimen's body. So that a person can live forever - what is a person if not a constellation of her memories?

An amazing suspenseful first half gives way to a vapid second half. The second half is such a drag and the book could've been at least 75 pages shorter. A brilliant concept that's lost in execution. But still a good read nonetheless.

An Enthralling book. Intense from the very beginning. The characters of Ganesh and vasanth bring some humour in the later part of the book. Even after 2 decades of its publication, it is captivating(though it is not possible to fake a person's death through letters and phone calls). Eventhough it is predictable at times, it was an interesting read..

புத்தகத்தின்எ ஒவ்வொரு பக்கமும் என்ன நடக்கும் என்ன செய்வார்கள் என்று எதிர்பார்ப்பை தூண்டிவிடும்.

வசந்த் மற்றும் கணேஷ் ஹீரோ வந்த உடன் இன்னும் விறுவிறுப்பாக செல்லும்.

I am still in a daze..how did he manage to write all this in 1991. From voice processing to AI, every factor of this book left me awestruck. Loved Ganeshs intelligence and vasanths humor. Hats off to one of the greatest writers who lived in this face of the earth!!

Beautifully written sci-fi medical thriller.
1991 ல் எழுதப்பட்ட நாவலை 29 வருடம் கழித்து படிக்கிறேன், ஆனாலும் சுவாரஸ்யத்துக்கும், அறிவியல் தகவல்களுக்கும் பஞ்சமே இல்லை. Wondering how in 90s he could think much ahead of time...Climax twist is superb!!!

As in other reviews, till entry of ganesh vasanth the novel was in n-th gear and then slowly came to n/n gear towards the end.
But only sujatha can come up with such stories. Also makes us to wonder how many such experiments really happen in the world around us.
The final word and pun in it ... typical sujatha
Definitely a different read ... for sujatha fans it is a must read
