Sujatha
303 books1,371 followersSujatha was the allonym of the Tamil author S. Rangarajan, Author of over 100 novels, 250 short stories, ten books on science, ten stage plays, and a slim volume of poems. He was one of the most popular authors in Tamil literature, and a regular contributor to topical columns in Tamil periodicals such as Ananda Vikatan, Kumudam and Kalki. He had a wide readership, and served for a brief period as the editor of Kumudam, and has also written screenplays and dialogues for several Tamil movies.
As an engineer, he supervised the design and production of the electronic voting machine (EVM) during his tenure at Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), a machine which is currently used in elections throughout India. As an author he inspired many authors, including Balakumaran, Madhan.

Book 42 of 2025- அனிதாவின் காதல்கள்

காதல் கதைகள் வாசிக்கும் ஆர்வம் குறைந்து பல வருடங்கள் ஆகிறது. இருப்பினும், சில எழுத்தாளர்களின் காதல் கதைகள் எப்போதுமே வாசிக்கப் பிடிக்கும். அப்படியான எழுத்தாளர்களுள் ஒருவர் தான் சுஜாதாவும். “பிரிவோம் சந்திப்போம்” புத்தகம் ஏற்படுத்திய தாக்கமும் ஒரு காரணம். தலைப்பிலே காதலை பார்த்ததும் பெரும் ஆவலுடன் தான் இதை வாசிக்கத் தொடங்கினேன்.
அனிதா கல்லூரிப் பெண். இவளை உருகி உருகி நேசிக்கும் முறை மாமன் ஒரு பக்கம், கண்டவுடன் காதல், திருமணம் வரை செல்லும் ஒரு பெரிய business man, வீட்டில் பார்த்த அமெரிக்க மாப்பிள்ளை, மூவருக்குமே இவள் மேல் காதல், இவளுக்கு யார் மீதும் பெரிய ஈர்ப்பென்பதே இல்லை.Business man எப்படியோ எல்லாரையும் கவர்ந்து அனிதாவை திருமணம் செய்து கொள்கிறான்.
விருப்பமே இல்லாமல் இவளும் திருமண வாழ்க்கை தொடர்கிறாள். இவளது படிப்பின் மீதிருக்கும் ஆர்வம், மேல்படிப்பு படிக்க வேண்டும் என்கிற பிடிவாதமெல்லாம் மறைந்து போகிறது. அவன் மேல் இவளுக்கும் காதல் வந்ததா? திருமணத்தால் இவள் வாழ்வில் ஏற்படும் திருப்பங்களே கதை.
சுஜாதா ஏன் இப்படி ஒரு பெண் கதாபாத்திரத்தை எழுதினார் என்று தெரியவில்லை. இவள் ஒரு சராசரி பெண். சுஜாதாவின் கதையில் வரும் பெண் அல்ல. முடிவெடுக்கத் தெரியாமல், எடுப்பார் கைப்பிள்ளை போல் இருக்கிறாள். இந்த கதையின் முடிவில் எனக்கு துளியும் உடன்பாடில்லை. எழுதியது சுஜாதா என்பதால் ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளவே முடியவில்லை. வழக்கமான கணவன் செய்த தவறுகளை மன்னித்து ஏற்கும் பெண்ணாக இருக்கிறாள் அனிதா. மீண்டும் அதே கேள்வி, why Sujatha? Why?

A shockingly conservative climax and an absolutely irritating female protagonist.

One of the less satisfying Sujatha novels.
Anitha is a middle class girl who has a line of suitors who want to marry her. There is the US groom through arranged marriage who doesn't give her time to decide, there is a poor and supportive relative groom. Ultimately a rich industrialist buys out her entire family just to marry her - a family she was sure will never allow someone outside the caste to marry.
After this the book turns weird with futures trading and share market irregularities. An arrest followed by investigation with every suitor trying to exploit her situation. You can feel the suffocation and know that it was true for 80% of the women in the 80s and 90s.
The ending was too backward for Sujatha's novels I felt. Maybe the contemporaries would have done it differently at the time (Thi Ja). It was engaging but ultimately let down.

The ever confused lead female character of Sujatha.
“தெரியலையே, புரியலாயே, பயமா இருக்கு, வேண்டாம்”
This Anitha becomes the strong - “I will save my husband from this predicament” Iron Lady in the end. The men were…colourful!

It's sujatha book. do u need anything more to convince you.
a family drama happening around anitha, with each page anitha's life gets more pathetic and pathetic. but ended with a hopeful note.
the story was written in 90's. The main theme of the book is about marriage and love-life of anitha. but the subtle way how sujatha engraved feminism in it show his power over narration and words. there's satire and simple silver lining in every line.

Slow moving story. Nicely describes a pathetic situation of a girl from a middle class family where rather taking her own decisions, she is forced to accept the decision of her family members. Couple of characters don't have a lasting at all on you. Okkk to read.

A Feel good family drama. Oru middle class traditional family la valarra ponnoda nelamaya puttu puttu vechurukar. Her life is taken by the Storm called "Vairavan" . Liked the ending. Sujatha fans give a try.

A sweet story, Sujatha's narration style was so obvious throughout, but the storyline itself is... Quite something you wouldn't expect from him!
