I hope that the prayers in this book, designed for the different hours of the day, will help us ... to make our prayer not just an intermittent activity, but a dimension present continually in all that we undertake... -- Bishop Kallistos Ware, from the Preface
His Excellency, the Most Reverend Metropolitan Kallistos of Diokleia (also known by his lay name, Timothy Ware) is a titular metropolitan of the Ecumenical Patriarchate in Great Britain. From 1966-2001, he was Spalding Lecturer of Eastern Orthodox Studies at Oxford University, and has authored numerous books and articles pertaining to the Orthodox Christian faith.
This is a nice brief (76 page) collection of Orthodox prayers going back to the eight century A.D. I didn't naturally appreciate these prayers as much as others I've read--for instance, selections from the Book of Common Prayer--but they may just be because I'm a Protestant and a Westerner. Some of the best ones reminded me of the book of Psalms (a book which, of course, is also neither Protestant nor Western).
A beautiful little compilation of Orthodox prayers throughout the day. Not all-encompassing by any means and with some less-than-perfect formatting of chapters/sections, but a worthy addition to anyone devoted to praying more at all hours of the day.
This is a neat collection of Orthodox prayers. I appreciated how they were organized by time of day, and for the insightful introduction to the Orthodox approach to prayer.
A collection of prayers from the 8th Century document The Barberini Codex for various hours of the day. Ancient though they be, I did not find them to be prayers I would want to say, but only of some historical interest.
