This book was good for me in the season of advent to focus on God again. It was definitely an interesting book with many good perspectives on the men of the old and new testament. If this is your thing then give it a try. I enjoyed it.

This is a really good look at the lives of some of the men in the Bible. Richard Rohr is insightful in his exploration and his writing is very readable. He looks at each character using paintings done by Louis Glanzman that add depth to his understandings as offers insights into the painter's vision of the characters as well. The paintings add a beautiful dimension to Rohr's scriptural and historical analysis of each figure and his thoughts on their relevance to men of faith as we seek to live out our faith in light of the cloud of witnesses who went before us as presented here. The art is very good and Rohr's thoughts and insights are timely.

Rohr's style is very accessible. The tone is conversational, the approach is very contemporary.

In this collection of reflections on Biblical figures, my favorite First Testament man is Abraham. His leap in faith is the trust in God required when he is taking his only son up the mountain to sacrifice him, as he believed was the desire of God. But God corrects that notion, and so is revealed as the God who wants intimacy, communion, not distance or fear.
Of the New Testament figures, Rohr resents John the Baptist as a bridge between the 'old' dispensation and the new. Again, revelation is one of forgiveness. John is from a priestly lineage, but he is also an 'outsider', an upstart. He is someone clearing the way.
