It's the year 2023, and a government-created virus meant to produce super soldiers has activated a hidden gene in half the population The end-result gave them superhero-like powers. Decades of covert operations followed by an all-out war to destroy this new race has left the country decimated. One group of these Exceptionals is out to heal the world. They take in stranded Exceptionals, and fight against the army trying to kill them all.
Their efforts lead them to Annie, a young woman in New York City who doesn't realize the danger she is in. The rescue takes a side turn that leaves them in a scramble to save her life.
Meanwhile, hidden deep in the compound of General Steele, the man in charge of the soldiers, two key Exceptionals are being held against their will. They have a plan to escape, which could lead to freedom, or certain death.
These two branches of rebel Exceptionals are in for the fight of their lives. Only problem is, in a world that is out of glass slippers and fairy godmothers, not everyone can make it out alive.
Hi! I’m Sarah Cass, author, nurse, mom of three, wife, and caretaker of six spoiled rescue cats. I’ve been writing stories for over 20 years, and they tend to get a little spicy, a little emotional, and a little mysterious—just the way I like them.
My published series include: • The Dominion Falls Series – spicy historical western mystery/suspense (10 books & counting!) • Holidays in Lake Point - A sweet small-town standalone romance collection (all set around holidays!) • The Tribe – a shifter-based urban fantasy/paranormal romance • And coming soon: Dark Sky Valley, a contemporary western romance set in the present-day version of Dominion Falls!
When I’m not writing or working as a nurse, you’ll find me crocheting, knitting, watching Friends or Star Trek for the millionth time, or plotting my family's next move—hopefully to Colorado!
Let’s connect—I love chatting with readers and fellow book nerds
This book ticked so many boxes for me as a reader. Set on a devastated post apocalyptic earth in the not so distant future, genetic mutations caused by a government created virus have changed humanity as we know it, creating a group of "Exceptionals", people with a range of extraordinary abilities, hunted by those who are responsible, and who now seek to destroy them or use them for their own nefarious purposes. Annie, a young woman holed up in New York City , knowing she is about to die, has her world turned on its end when she becomes the focus of a rescue mission, her rescuer one of a group of Exceptionals who have dedicated themselves to hiding and protecting their fellows, while also trying to fight the man responsible for their creation. When the degree to which Annie is linked to several of this community is revealed, she is not the only one to have her world tilt on its axis and the community may never be the same again. The first book in what promises to be an exciting and action packed series , this is one I would recommend to fans of the likes of X-Men , with its diverse cast of superhuman characters. One of the most interesting aspects of the story , and one that I hope is expanded on in later books, is the ties to Native American heritage and culture, this I felt gave the book a unique extra dimension. As I have said there is a diverse cast of characters, and in a way, this is one of the few things I could find fault with. We are introduced to so many, so quickly , and with a web of interconnected relationships, both familial and romantic, that it made the first few chapters of the book a little complicated to follow. It also didn't help that some characters had multiple names, and some had names that were very similar to each other, but once I got my head around it, it got a lot easier, though it might have been nice to have a list or chart at the beginning of the book to refer back to if needed. There are some really intriguing characters that I hope to find out more about as the series goes on, particularly the intriguing and dangerous Caiman and the smart and determined Talisa. I thought the writing flowed very nicely, particularly impressive given the fact that there are two authors involved, if there were not two names on the cover, as a reader I would never have known. The pacing of the story itself is very good, with plenty of action and drama to keep the reader hooked, and while the book does have a satisfying conclusion it also has hints about where the story may go, and I for one am excited to find out. I received and advance copy from the author , but all opinions are entirely my own
This book is an absolute WOW!!! I adore this author and her writing.
Annie meets James when he comes into her home and tells her she is in grave danger. She is reluctant but agrees to go with him. Things get very weird. She is an exceptional. She survive the war but her life is in serious danger. She meets a whole group of people and quickly finds herself surrounded by love. She is out through s series of test and the results are not good.
James is always angry. Annie somehow soothes him and he can’t understand why.
Can he save her or will her life be over?
The characters in this book are amazing. My favorite is Caiman. I hope more is to come.
