In this third installment of the Moonrise saga, characters new and familiar collide in the aftermath of the great Crucible disaster that has pushed the northern realms to the brink of chaos.
A mutineered ship captain finds a desperate woman lost at sea. An incognito Wolf sentinel reunites with an old friend. A tribune uncovers a dark and insidious plot pointing to the very top of the Ehlronian military. And an Eskan noblewoman navigates the Diamond Court and the dark politics lurking therein.
The pieces are moving and the board will soon be set. Who will come out on top and who will be left behind by this new awakening ?
DNF This book put me in a reading slump. I couldn’t finish it. I read 56% of the book. That’s more than 2 and a half of a trilogy, and all I got was more and more questions and mysteries. Nothing is getting solved, no answers anywhere. The dialogues are cheesy, cliche, and hollow. For a book with so many characters you’d expect to see some connections between them by now but they’re as far away as each other as it’s possible.
-spoiler alert-
There are also some scenes in the book that pissed me off so hard just because there were either cringey or meaningless as hell. Like the dialogues at the start of the second book about girls’ period. What the hell was that?? Or in the middle of the third book where Brenden is thinking that a woman that she just met is “the closest thing he has to a parent” like… what?? Why???? How???? Like he literally just met the woman??
All in all I had really high hopes and expectations for the story after I finished the first book but I just got more and more disappointed. I think the book takes so much time to describe things and so little time to actually talk about the storyline.

There is a content warning because A New Awakening contains depictions of murder, mysogyny, racism, classism, military, warfare, homophobia, assault, blood, human trafficking, people in cages, house fire, home invasion, war, military conflict, and loss of a loved one.
This story is well written, pulling you in quickly and you immediately become attached to the main characters. I really enjoyed this book!! The author has clearly defined their world and put a lot of thought into the social and political dynamics. Though the world building is huge, the author also takes time to let the reader get to know the characters too. This is a really great book I look forward to reading book 4.

So far, this is probably one of my favorites in the series, simply because the story progressed so much and we finally have some idea of what's going on, why the Cavallo name holds so much weight, and what Brendon's future is going to look like. We are also introduced to new characters and even get Augustus's perspective on what is happening, a character we were briefly introduced to in the second book.
This book is fast-paced, and an "awakening" indeed happens as the events in this book crescendo into war, grief, and political espionage. I am looking forward to reading book four, which is set to release in October 2023. The character growth, world-building, and commentary on the human condition, coupled with the action kept my attention. In fact, I was able to read this entire book in just a couple of hours.
Overall, this is a great third book in the series and goes back to the roots of the first book, with each chapter being told from a different perspective. I can't wait for more!.

3.75* My favorite Moonrise book thus far! This book expands the story with 5 (or maybe 6? I forget if there is a Kumori chapter towards the beginning) POVs.
The good: We get some 5* moments near the end, especially through Arlo’s POV and Augustus’s POV. I also really enjoyed reading about the Eskan politics through Nadia. I feel like the author really shines when describing the personal or political non-combat scenes. Also in all of my other reviews, I’ve forgotten to mention the art! Unsure if they’re in the stand alone versions, but the art the author creates himself is awesome! It’s so cool to see what certain characters and settings look like through the eye of the author, and they help visualize certain scenes much better.
The could be improved: Some of the pacing felt off. I wanted more time to get to know certain characters before moving on (hard to say more without spoilers). The more combat-adjacent/violent scenes felt a little muddy. I’m also going to explain this next point poorly, but maybe it’ll help someone: I feel like certain events happened at too perfect of a time, which took me out of the world. One of the most important parts of a fantasy world, to me at least, is making it feel real. Not in the sense of Earth-plausible, but in the sense that the world building makes the land, culture, people, etc. feel rich and tangible. When events slot in too perfectly it either indicates (1) some higher power is controlling the narrative or (2) the author is trading some of that realism to push plot within a manageable number of pages. We have not seen much of (1) in this book, so if it is happening, it should be explained how that higher power (be it a god or magic in general) works. As for (2), I felt like there was no plot reason for the perfect timing of certain events all lining up. And that’s what took me out of the world a bit.
Overall, a solid book that I would recommend to those who love adventure stories and are interested in politics.
I received this book from Booksirens in exchange for my honest review.
Uff... This saga is starting to grate on my nerves. I am all in for a slow pace, multiple characters and plot lines but it is starting to feel a bit redundant. In anime/manga, this will be a filler arc: no real development to the plot yet charming in an unexpected way. The new characters and plot lines are interesting and well written, but they justa add to the mystery. No answers are obtained about the real goal for this massive universe just hints. Leara and Nadia are the saving grace of this book for me. Augustus frustrates me with his "I wan't to help, but I most follow orders first". Brendon, finally, makes a choice and discovers who his father was. Overall, an okay book 3.5 star maybe (.5 for being an easy and fast reading).
If the plot doesn't move in the next book, I would have to DNF this story for a few years and resumed when more books are out.

As we get further into the series, the author draws the reader in further and further. The pieces are starting to fit together as we start to see more of the wider world from a big-picture lense. As a personal preference, I prefer to have more of the pieces put together sooner, but I understand the allure of keeping everything apart until just the right time.
We get just enough insight into to characters to keep wondering what's going to happen next and what external forces are going to affect their plans to themselves.

I think this book has some amazing ideas I really like most of the characters But it's too much, too many characters to much pages wasted on something that does not lead to anywhere It builds up tension like a master but it gets to the point where it's just so much that when you reach the climax of the story it falls short I really like the world building I really enjoyed reading the different POV but I feel like I don't have answers And I already ended the trilogy.

This book is what I would call a plot-mover. Part of me wants to say it's my least favorite of the three, but the other part of me wants to put it above book one (yes, I know the start system doesn't show that, but it's where I'm at.)
The first half of this 2/5ths of this book was incredibly slow to me. I kept checking how far into the book I was and it was never as far as I'd hoped. But the last 3/5ths finally started to pick up. New characters that were introduced finally started showing some good reason for their introduction. Previous main support characters that had been relegated to sidelings made more of an appearance with hints that they would perhaps thrive with time. Previous sidelings that had stepped up to main/main support characters started making decisions that could change the status quo and make a real difference.
That said, there are still some issues with the book. A character sits on a rock and then lays back into the grass, a character has been in a town for a month but the castle within for several months. Little things like this make for a slight issue with immersion-continuance, but could be fixed with a little bit more editing and don't truly affect the story that much.
It's hard to introduce new characters in your third book that aren't interacting directly with previously known characters. It can make readers just want to skim or entirely skip their chapters, but I think this new stand-a-lone character, who is discovering a web of lies, will be good in the long-term. Her story was definitely more interesting in the last half of the book.
Moral of the review, if you're struggling at the beginning with this book, I would definitely encourage you to stick with it. It gets much better and I am looking forward to the next part of the story.

With each book, Dovidans seems to become a better and better writer, and the narrative he is weaving continues to become more and more intriguing. This was definitely and by far the best of the three, so far. While the first two books definitely have hints of political intrigue happening behind the veil, it becomes full-blown in A New Awakening.
I was stoked when I saw that Augustus was a POV character in this book because he was a great character in Legion, despite being moderately mysterious. Arlo was also a great addition to the POV characters. While I like all of the youngen characters, it was nice to have a more seasoned and mature POV to read through. Beyond that, he's just such a good character, both in terms of morality and quality. Was nice to get back to Leara as well, and I felt like it was a good call to not show us her deterioration into a savage killer, simply just showing us what he quest for revenge has turned her into. Also love how Kumori is such a little slut, picking up ladies right left and center. I'd seen on Dovidan's TikTok that him a Nadia strike something up at some point, and I'm really looking forward to that, as there characters seem quite comparable with each other. And how could I forget Nadia, another great addition. She is a very sweety character, intelligent but naive, and I really look forward to seeing where Dovidans takes her character.
The pacing of this book was the best yet, but there were a couple parts that felt a bit rushed/abrupt, primarily what happens with Olga near the end. This was easily overlookable, however, as the rest of the book flies at a lightening pace that feels earned.
Overall, this was a really great read that has gotten me quite excited for the last two books in this 'arc'.
Book 3 is really starting to open up and find it's stride, although there is still a lot going in which is unclear as to the overall storyline. I'm always going to be willing to stick with it though, wherever it leads, as I really enjoy the whole experience. The story as it is progressing: Brendon has now been scooped up by Kumori and is making his way across the country trying to find allies and give him a chance to recover from his ordeal in the Crucible. He's still not sure of his future path and is a little resentful as it seems all choices are being made for him.
Leara's back and is on the trail of her father's killers. A pretty bleak revenge storyline with a lighter note being added by her avuncular travelling companion. We also see a new nation being introduced and get a little peek into how that society is run, complete with an uneasy sense of conspiracy that the characters themselves seem almost entirely unaware of. Just leaving you with a low level dread that not all is right in this land. Brendon's old military buddies appear in a very peripheral capacity, as the intrigues there continue. They seem to be the only ones in that enormous army who can take care of their business so it's nice to see them shine.
As was the case with the first book, there's a lot going on for such a short novel. I'm conflicted because I find that extremely frustrating - but I enjoy every minute. I will have to maintain my trust in the author that he has a larger game at play here that will gradually be revealed in time.
The progress of this story is amazing! It moves quickly and is super entertaining. We return to the multiple POV that the first book had, and we meet again with characters we didn't know anything about during the second book, learning more about their progress and the difficulties they face, we also meet new characters, full of life and who let us know many more details about the past and why Brendan is so important. There is such a wide variety among the cast and we visit so many stories in the different chapters, it is a super enjoyable story to read. You don't get bored at any time.
With this book you go through so many different situations and emotions that drive you to keep reading without stopping. Again a super fast and enjoyable read, easy to follow the development of the world and not get lost among the different politics, stories and cities. The author put so much care into the creation of this world and the details of it that I can't help but fall in love with it.
This will be the last book I read for the series. I almost DNF’d this book, however, I was really hoping we would at least get to learn about the kid’s dad and what made him so special. No such luck. This one jumps POVs between different characters as it did in the first book of the series but now they’ve arbitrarily added on a couple more POVs that don’t really add anything to the story.
I’m not a big fan of the writing of the series. It almost reads like a fanfiction that relies on you already having background information of the characters. The book continues to revolve around some mystery that you are not privy to as the reader but everyone else in the story seems to know. The dialogue is also a bit cringy and seems to be the same cliches used even if the character is talking to different people. The characters also come across as immature even when they are supposed to be wise and experienced.

Okay, where do i begin? I enjoyed the first part of the book, but it gets a little too hard to continue reading it. One of the best things the author gets are the characters, they are good, you get to empathize with them and like them or hate them. But at the same time, you get a little mad when they are put aside and new characters appear. It's okay to have a lot of characters to portray different perspectives for the story, but only if they serve fot the principal story to continue. Unfortunately in this case it doesn't feel this way, there are some povs that, if they were cut, it wouldn't affect the book, maybe it would be better. Talking about the world, it's a really well constructed fantasy world, that's one of the things I loved from the first book, and I still love it, the author nailed it to make the world interesting. Most of all the magic and the big problem that was presented to use since the beginning should be more relevant, because I forgot about them until the last pages from this book. It got better than the second book, but still could be a little bit better.
After reading three books, Brendon and Leara still have absolutely no connections in the books. It feels like you reading 2 books at the same time.
Kimora and Brendon for sure have the most interesting story… but what it is… after three books I’m still clueless as to why Brendon is such a threat or what his father did that created all the drama.
I would love to give a better review but honestly after three books I’m just done. How many more books before we get to the story… the adventures are great don’t get me wrong… but now I’m like how many books do you need to know to know the back story before the adventure continues.
3 book with black book context but no clarify. It’s just to much and at this point I feels like it’s a money making scheme… buy one more book to get additional two clues….
“A New Awakening” certainly “awoke” interest in new characters and new parts of this world. After "Legion", getting used to the change in characters throughout the story took some time, especially with new ones, however, it didn't take long to fall in love with every single one. I loved that Brendon’s story continued and we got to know much more of Paul Cavallo. Everytime you learn something new, it opens the door to more questions. Even when the focus changed between characters, there was something going on everywhere all of the time, all equally exciting. So many parts of the story made me laugh and others left me soaking in all the new information in this great adventure.
As usual, it was very cozy. I would recommend this book to someone who loves complex fantasy world building but still wants to relax and take in the experience.
The world of Moonrise has definitely captured me, and I was excited to start the newest story in the series. The multiple POVs return, yay! While I loved how book 2 developed Bren as a character, I was really missing the other characters introduced in book 1. In addition to bringing back the POVs from book 1, A New Awakening also adds 2 new POV characters. I rather enjoyed the new Eskan noble POV, and I was left wanting many more chapters from her.
I read the first 3 Moonrise stories in quick succession so I can't complain too much, but I do wish that this story had been published as one larger novel instead of a series of short novellas.

A New Awakening was just that, a new awakening of adventure, rollercoaster emotions, old friendships/acquittances, hardships, growth... so much all rolled into one book.
This book delves even deeper into what is going on and why it is going on. You are drawn in and taken on the adventure alongside the characters.
This book did not let me down, and I was happy to be able to read all three books so far in succession so that I was able to grasp what was going on, and what was going to happen or potentially happen.
It is a beautiful book, and so are the other two. If you get a moment, and you really want to go on an adventure, I suggest giving the Moonrise books a shot. Who knows what will happen next!!
Fantasy, adventuring, and guild novel. Main character is Bren but the 3rd story line from the first book returns here her name is Leara. Bren goes on yet another adventure. A few questions have been answered but many remain unanswered with more questions piled on. Bren learns more about his father. Leara makes a friend. There’s much more description and setting changes in this book. This book held my attention more than the others. There are many plots in play and there’s no way to see how they connect yet. Short read.

I couldn’t put the book down. We are back to several POVs and it continues to grow the universe. I was feeling like Brandon and getting frustrated with the way everyone mentions Paul Cavallo but not what he did and we finally get some answers in this book. It was a little slow paced but it works. The way it’s written makes you feel the way you felt while finishing high school; feeling like you are being dragged by the currents trying to catch your breath while figuring out what you want to do with your life. I really enjoyed reading the first 3 books and can’t wait till book 4 is released.

Finally we are back to multiple povs which made me happy to read it more and felt more invested the storyline now follows instead of first book two men and one girl point of views but now two women and a man. The 3rd installment of the series follows Leara and Bren on their adventures as well as a newly introduced character - Nadia - as she tries to navigate court life and the politics of being high born. And again check up on our favourite assassin.
But sadly we are not yet in resolve since many mysteries lie yet unsolved.

We are thrown into multiple points of view again in this installment, from a varying amount of perspectives in the world that is being built. It's a little dizzying to me, as I'm terrible at keeping track of names sometimes, but that shouldn't diminish from the larger, overall story it's building.
Some questions I had with the previous books were answered, but mostly it led to more questions, especially with the addition of more new characters. I'm now expecting this to be a trend, as the story seems to be much larger than I'm anticipating. I'm hoping it all pays off, and so far it seems very promising.

This book is a promise for a fun trip through fantasy land. the first two were setting the scene and were quite slow paced, but once I read this one, I was lost in the story.
We get to follow many characters and feel what they go through, which i prefer over the previous book. It also introduces many new plots and characters (I take it as a promise for an even deeper story in future books) And the fascinating thing is, I enjoyed following all the characters, I never felt bored or irritated reading a chapter over another. I also liked how long the book was, i hope future ones are too.
3.5/5 This series is consistent in its writing style and prose. It’s pretty quick which is nice but each book feels like it’s not doing enough. They feel more like installments or novellas than full novels with complete arcs. That being said, they are mostly enjoyable to read. I finally feel like we have hit some character development in this book. Nadia and Brendon were engaging to follow through this book. Augustus felt very flat and I think I would have preferred his compatriots POV - she seemed to have more of a spine.
I really do want to continue the series, and I think it would be pleasant to do so if I manage expectations about their structure.
I feel like this is where this story really starts to take off. We find out much more about the plot and the role that Bren, one of the main characters has to play. We find out more about the events that lead to this adventure and the picture becomes a bit clearer. The writing is beautiful and the author really does a great job of being descriptive but not boring. I'm excited to read more in the series as it unfolds. It seems like this is going to be a very intricate and detailed world with lots of vibrant characters.

This is my favorite book of the series so far. Now that the world is established and we're more aware of the political maneuvers that are going on, the pace really picked up with action on every front in this book. Every character had a clear motivation and made me want to know more about their story and what was going to happen to them. I especially loved Nadia's story and can't wait to see where it goes. The art, as always, is impeccable and really helps to immerse the reader in the world. I can't wait to continue reading in this world as more of the story is released! 4.5/5 stars
I do like that the story structure has come back to the way the first book was written. I am frustrated reading these as there is never any resolution in any of the books. You get questions then more questions, and the book ends. I much prefer when book series start on a new phase of life, but this isn’t. The writing isn’t bad, but writing just to drag the reader along into another book is frustrating. I won’t be reading anymore of these as I have no hope for any true story structure happening.

I liked that it went back to the multiple pov's, it shows exactly how each character feels and thinks and lets us get to know them better. I love the way these stories are written, but this one was little more slow paced for me, I had to stop and read something else a few times to get back into it, I don't know why, maybe the fact that there were more questions and mysteries showing up and not always answering the previous ones, but at the same time I liked those new storylines. In the end, I loved it!.

We finally get Leara back, but we are also given a few more characters. Another odd twist going from three main characters to one and then back to many.
So we learn a little more about the conspiracy that movers around Brendon, and we finally get another glimpse of the past.
There are many players in this game, and as we see more conspiracies and people involved in this. It's way bigger than it first appeared to be. We don't know what Leara, Arlo, or Nadia have to do with this, I guess they are involved somehow, and I want more of their stories. We only know that the government or at least some of their high-ranking members are involved and want Brendon for their own reasons. And we hope that the Wolf Guild is really trying to protect him.
This installment was somewhat less compelling than the earlier books in the series. I like that we got to see some of the other perspectives again because it made for a more well rounded picture but I feel like there wasn't as much character development as there should have been and that the story could have been a bit faster paced. All in all it was still a good story and I'm excited to see how things resolve.

I am absolutely hooked into this story, 3 books in! I loved this one with the different characters' points of view that intertwine with one another. The story is really moving along now and seems to be building into something big. As with the first 2, the writing really pulls you in without being over the top. The author is skilled at giving all the right amount of detail. I'm very much looking forward to book 4!.
