I'm short on time today, so, I won't give my usual detailed review. What I will say is that, what the writers and illustrators of the previous volume did well before, they excel at here...but the hard-edged nature is still present, as you'll see below.

Content Concerns: Three or four sexual remarks, including one about syphilis; d-words and h-words get used about five times each, and other expletives (b-----d), euphemisms ("flippin'," "dang") and implied profanity are seen as well; freaky visuals, including scary monsters and scenes of rather bloody violence, are seen throughout; emotional intensity in nearly every issue.

This was a pretty long read, the first is about Peter fighting this new threat called Freak whose a drug addict and transforms into that and he goes through different transformation and in different chapters fights Pete and that final fight was something meanwhile Peter has to deal with heavy blizzards and this guy Dr Rabin who wants to merge with some Mayan God Kuhul Ajaw and that story was quite fun and a good wolverine cameo but was so stretched but decent, seeing Spidey do good deeds with that old man was something and then the threat of Menace continues as he is targeting politicians and also good stuff with Jonah. It was a fun read and just shows the many different threats Peter has to face while some big threats are brewing in the background and the art was good but the one in the winter story was bad. Overall a good but lengthy read and has good spidey moments and new villains and progresses the brand new day arc!

A villain created out of his own drug addiction (and a horrendous coincidence that he just happens to steal a fix from Dr. Curt Connors)? Wow, did Gale take one of those 80's DEA payoffs to "just say no to drugs"?

Gale does some pretty humourless windy dialogue, and it's incredibly painful to see him narrate every single step of Spidey's "Charlie Brown running for the football" stupid optimism. We also get to see some grade-school moralising which is always fun. And he does that thing in the middle of a fight where two people who should be moving fast and not thinking hard are having a thorough debate over some issue - yeah right, as if you'd be debating while throwing fists.

Jimenez does a great job of conveying the fluidity of the battles, and does some great, clear art of the figures, but something seems funhouse-mirror warped about the faces.

OTOH, the combination of Wells and Bachalo is an amazing read. The panels glide by as smoothly as the dialogue, and the sense of humour is right there front and centre. I'm amazed how much better this stands up against Gale and Jimenez. The idea of a mathematician messing around with ancient Mayan symbology (and this years before the so-called Mayan Apocalypse) and bringing down some ancient heavy hitters was cool.

The only complaint I have of this pairing is that Bachalo doesn't do a great job of making it clear what's in each panel or how the action progresses from some panels to others. He's clearly tuned his skills in the last few years, because his work on Wolverine and the X-Men is just as fun and reads much clearer.

Spider-Man goes up against Freak, a drug addict who's shot himself up with Dr. Curt Connors' animal serum and is seemingly invincible, and then Wolverine and Doctor Strange assist against the Mayan god Wayep during a magical blizzard.

For some reason most of the mysteries and plot threads from volume one are ignored in favor of a couple of multi-issue fights against new bad guys. Bob Gale's Freak issues left a bad taste in my mouth. They felt like old-school Spider-Man, but not in an especially good way; Freak has a flimsy excuse for going after Spider-Man and their interactions are all fairly straightforward fights. Gale also seems to do something weird with his explanations within the classic editor's caption boxes at the bottom of some panels, with his tongue so firmly planted in his cheek that it borders on snark or parody. Wells's set was definitely a step up, though Wayep seemed like an odd choice of villain for Pete to go up against. The couple of twists and the effects of the blizzard were high points but it wasn't enough for me to say that I really liked the volume as a whole.

A little bit better, but not by much.

World: The art is generally okay, but it does get really good when it hits the snow storm but then gets back to what it was before which is okay. The world building is okay, for what it is. All the things built from the run before is now washed away with Brand New Day...and now I regret thinking it was aight with it, cause I'm not. The current status quo is fairly meh. I'm not really invested in the DB, the political stuff and also the villains...yeah.

Story: The Freak story is rather meh and really a boring villain, add the weird pacing where the middle Mayan God snow storm thing that cuts into it in the middle and it's a bit of a mess. I am not liking and invested in any of the multiple storylines in place...zzz. I liked the Mayan story but it was only a middle of the road storyline but compared to the rest...zzz.

Characters: Peter is okay, his voice is a bit off for me and a bit too whiney and I feel like he is without and anchor or a point at the moment, this needs to change. Freak is a very stupid villain so is Menace. The Mayan God thing looks kinda cool but that's about it. I don't really feel the JJJ storyline so yeah..

Overall this is not a good reboot at all, this book needs to find a point and an anchor...

Onward to the next book!

I rated The Amazing Spider-Man: Brand New Day 2 by Bob Gale five stars because it is a good book and kept me reading. I feel this way about the book because there was so much action and events that kept happening and it kept me wondering what was next. One example is when Spider-Man started fighting the ancient mayans, i didn't know what was going to happen next. I would read another book by the same author and will finish the Spider-Man Brand New Day series. I really liked the art and it was easy to read.

Collects Amazing Spider-Man issues #552-558

This collection continues the early stories after the "Brand New Day" era kicked off in Peter's life. Instead of Dan Slott, this collection has stories from two other members of the Spidey Braintrust, Bob Gale and Zeb Wells.

This volume features the debut of the Spider-Man villain, Freak, who is simultaneously a mix of (1) an interesting idea for a villain and (2) an incredibly boring character with little to no motivation (other than being a drug addict and wanting to find drugs and beat up Spider-Man because he once stopped him from finding drugs).

This volume also had a boring story featuring Wolverine, Doctor Strange, a blizzard, and some Mayan ninjas. Trust me, it sounds better than it actually was.

I've read future stories, so I know the true identity of Menace, but I think the mystery continues to be one of the best part of these early "Brand New Day" issues (for a first-time reader, that is).

You know which new character I like? Dexter Bennett, Peter's new boss at the newspaper.

First off I will say I loved the art. Probably the best part about this book. It's an alright spidey book and all, nothing fascinating by any means. There were some great classic Spidey one liners that did cause me to literally laugh out loud. The main story is of the meth addict who shoots up with Doc Connors stem cell research stuff and mutates. Not a bad villain sense every time they try and kill him he goes Into a cocoon and comes out stronger. I also enjoyed the break from that story with the Mayan God during the Blizzard storyline with Dr Strange and Wolverine. Watching Pete struggle with finances and everyday life and finding balance is always the part that makes a good Spider-Man story. And this book delivers that. All in all it was worth reading once and was enjoyable, but it won't be a classic.

After a strong opening trade, this one was just ok. I applaud Marvel for trying to create new villains, but the one introduced in this trade doesn't really have that special something that makes him interesting.

There is Chris Bachalo art in this though, and it is gorgeous. When you read the story with his art in it, you'll wish he drew 30 Days of Night. But still, the mystical nature of the story didn't feel very Spidey-like.

They've got a good handle on the Peter Parker voice, and I'm enjoying the supporting cast a bunch, so I'm still excited to read on. This was just a bit of a downer trade after such a good beginning.

Is it just me or has the quality of "Amazing Spider-Man" really dropped off since JMS left?

This collection of two recently storylines is hit or miss. The stuff in the blizzard is decent, but it's bookended by a storyline that tries to create some kind of new menance for Spidey to battle and ends up being pretty much unreadable at times. I know we can't rely on classic villains all the time, but at least creating one that is interesting would be a nice step.

The first half of this collection is pretty forgettable. It involves a new - boring - villain called the Freak who likes to do drugs. Because we have different writers in every volume there is no follow up in this volume on Jackpot accidentally letting a mayoral candidate be killed or the villain from the last volume called The Menace (the freak the menace? gee - these writers sure seemed to run out of names for villains).

But the second half is a story about the coming of a Mayan god who happens to bring a snow storm with him. And it shines because of the art of Chris Bachalo. There is some jaw dropping art and beautifully rendered snowscapes. It is a straight forward plot with a twist or two but the art makes it worth it - along with the budding character development of police woman Carlie - who will play a bigger role in Peter Parker's life in the coming years. Because of this story arc I'll give the whole volume 3 stars.

"YOU GOT A REAL FACE FOR RADIO, PAL... IF YOU TURNED THE RADIO ALL THE WAY DOWN... AND UNPLUGGED IT... AND SOLD THE RADIO."
- Spider-Man to the horribly mutated "Freak."

First, a guy who'd inject or ingest anything drug-like mutates into the poster child for "say no to drugs," while also ruining Peter's coverage of the city mayoral race.
Next, a blizzard hits NYC, and Spidey has to find the solution to a magical Doctor Strange riddle. This was drawn by Chris Bachalo, one of my favorites, whose abstract, busy, and detailed style has grown on me over the years. Though written by Zeb Wells, the art saved this from sliding into the dumpster fire that can, at times, be any Wells' story. Decent story. Excellent art.
Finally, the Freak returns to deal with Spider-Man. Spidey teaches us about quicklime.
For the Bachalo story alone, four stars.

Talk about a mixed bag! There are two story arcs in this volume: one that's really cool by Wells—yes, Wells wrote some good Spidey stories back in the day—and another by Bachalo featuring a Mayan god and New York City in the middle of a blizzard. I know it sounds weird when you put it like that, but Wells mixes action and humour well and really captures Spidey's voice. Bachalo has a blast and the colours are great.

As for the other one... Bob Gale writes—badly—a mediocre story with an accidental freak. The main plot is very poorly handled, the dialogue is poor, and Gale doesn't get Spidey. The opposite of Wells, in short. In the end, it's the subplots that maintain a bit of interest.
Phil Jimenez's artwork leaves a dull impression.

A seguir.

I was one of the many Spider-Man fans who felt completely betrayed by the One Day More/Brand New Day revamp storyline. It smacked of lazy storytelling so I stopped reading Spider-Man for a while when it happened. I picked this up when Amazon had the Kindle version dirt cheap. I finally got around to reading it and I have to say, it was entertaining. I love it when writers try to expand a hero’s rogues gallery and while Spidey has arguably the best (only Batman is competition), there are times when villains can get a little stale. Freak and Menace are weird but interesting additions. I’m sure I’ll keep reading at some point.

Didn't like the whole "Freak" story for many reasons. [1]Doc Connor is still whining about only having one arm? Really? And Spidey feels the need to tell him not to turn into the Lizard again. Done to death that one. [2] Spidey whines a lot too [3] JJJ whines a lot too. [4] others whine a lot about the new publisher [5] super-whiny comic

The villain in this wasn't exactly my favorite, and I think the main storyline itself felt a little long. There were some great panels throughout, though, really bringing to life some of these scenes. And we always love a good team up, so it was fun to see Wolverine and Doctor Strange make an appearance. Overall, it was just a fine read. Nothing really stood out to me.

4/5⭐️

A drug addict accidentally becomes a super villain while being chased by Spiderman. Meanwhile, Jonah Jameson is in hospital, and the DB has become a questionable newspaper. A fun storyline that is still introducing the changed universe and how the characters interact in it. A good read.

It was fine overall. The first Arc, about Freak, was bad. Super uninspired, very cliche. Trying vaguely to imitate the 70s, but not trying too hard. Very boring. The second Arc was better, but kind of high concept. Art style was very cool though. Feel like 3 stars might be a bit generous.

Brand New Day is amazing! These feel like authentic Spider-Man stories in the tradition of Stan Lee, Gerry Conway, Roger Stern, and Tom DeFalco. The Spidey “brain trust” of Gale, Guggenheim, Slott and Wells really seem to get what Spider-Man is all about.

It's spiderman

3.5 rounded up

It's spiderman being spiderman and doing spiderman things. I can see the rogues gallery forming, but none are all that compelling. Gotta say, I'm feeling like this might be the beginning of a slog through a long run of average stories.
