Collected Hutch Owen, Vol. 1

Rate this book
The Collected Hutch Owen is at once hilarious and enraged, snotty, and smart. These acclaimed dregs-of-society farces skewer the multinational, mega-merging, corporate forces that control our lives. Tom Hart's popular vagrant/rebel, Hutch Owen, rages while the world around him builds, merges, attends marketing seminars and goes IPO. The streets and alleyways that are his bedroom and study are now invisible beneath a coat of crude and insulting ads. His may be the only dissenting voice left! When the first tale, Hutch Owen's Working Hard, was released in 1994, it created an underground sensation and gained Tom Hart a die-hard following. Here are the two previously published tales, with two brand new, full-length stories, never before seen. Feel the Power! Catch the Wave! Join the Splurge!!

Hutch Owen is an irrepressible little punk, fightin' the man. Avoiding the 'real' world of modern commerce as much as he can. Very 90's feel. (Because that is when this was written.) I want more!

Comics about the adventures of a counter-culture anti-capitalist. In the first two, he battles against a villainous capitalist. In the 3rd, he tries temping at a Stock Market company. In the 4th (my favorite), he meets an old girlfriend from college who now works as a writer and editor at a women's magazine.

Hutch Owen is my hero! But even he must grow and change. I just noticed that Tom Hart is now doing a Hutch Owen daily strip, but honestly (sorry) I like these long-form comics so much more. Hart's illustration style becomes so epic when it has room for shapes large and small. It seems so simple at first, but there's such great artistry in the composition, such character in the little eyeless faces ...

4 stories. The first one is the original Xeric-award-winning "Hutch Owen's Working Hard" which I had as a mini-comic and loved so much. The other 3 stories are a little more hit-and-miss, but I snickered a bit at the one about Wall Street. The last one was pretty good, about people growing up and selling out, etc.

I wanted to enjoy this but couldn't. The first and last stories were my favorite but even they seemed to be focused on shooting down strawmen instead of actually pointing out the moral failings and hypocrisies of capitalist culture. Perhaps in a few years I'll read it again and have a better experience.
