While I work in behavior supports and Palay makes clear that when it comes to trauma, traditional behavior support “ain’t it”, I love this book. Palay and Aldridge have taken what we know to be true about the lived experience of people with ID and their supporters and created a simple and clear way for supporters to not only be trauma informed but trauma responsive and create healing. And lo and behold, it starts from the relationship with those around the person and how we manage ourselves first. Engaging, clear and easy to get through. This could easily be the most important thing for anyone working with those with ID who have experienced trauma(so that’s everyone) to learn.
