I Am Picky: Confessions of a Fussy Eater

Rate this book
A laugh-out-loud picture book about a self-proclaimed picky eater of a raccoon—perfect for human picky eaters!

Don’t look at this raccoon and think she’ll eat just anything. Oh, no. She is picky! She’s been choosy forever—and listen, it’s a tough life. It’s not as though the perfect snacks just fall from the sky (except when they do). You’ve got to work to find the sourest milk, the crunchiest bumblebees, and the most delicious trash. Snacking while picky is a real challenge sometimes…but you never know where you’ll find the tastiest treats to try!

From children's author Kristen Tracy and rising star illustrator Erin Kraan, I AM PICKY is sure to delight even the choosiest of eaters—and readers.

Can a racoon be a picky eater? Not in the way that you think! This cute picture book is a lot of fun to read about the eating habits of racoons. It is silly and that is the best part! The illustrations really help to bring the point across the page. A fun read for at home or story time!

Could have been a classic but was pretty one note. I will say the illustrations are remarkably disgusting, so Erin Kraan held up their end of the bargain.

First sentence: Don't look at me and think I'll eat ANYTHING. I will NOT. I am PICKY. I've been choosy my whole life.

Premise/plot: Is this raccoon a picky eater? Is pickiness all in the eye of the beholder? Is it all relative or subjective? Perhaps. The text definitely reveals that everyone is picky sometimes...in differing ways.

My thoughts: I like picture books about picky eaters. However, while I really LOVED the cover of this one, I thought the story itself was a little too gross for me...personally. No surprise to anyone...that I can be a picky reader. I think the 'gross' nature of this one--the raccoon's favorite treats from garbage cans--will appeal to certain readers. There's an age and stage that this one will appeal to.

As a fellow picky eater, I was interested in the title to see how one lives as another picky eater. I didn't know that a raccoon would even consider being picky because they usually eat anything. The grossest thing the raccoon had was a carton of spoiled milk from the 1980s...she would be dead unless the raccoon has a stomach of steel. Nonetheless, it was a silly but gross book to show that even when we assume something about a person, place, or thing that our assumptions could be very wrong. It makes us be more cognizant of other perspectives.

This little raccoon is picky, only the moldiest milk and putrid pizza slices will do. Surely you won't assume that they will eat anything! A goofy and gross book that is (probably) better to read after you've finished your dinner.

This one didn't work for me. I'm not sure why. It was just ok. I kept waiting for some reveal or twist about racoon realizing he liked other food or that stealing his snacks was a mean, but it never happened. I'm sure some readers will like it, it just wasn't for me.

Loved the art! Really great. The story, however, was a bit flat. The book said “I’m a picky eater” but that’s all. Didn’t go anywhere, didn’t learn anything. Felt like it could have really said something impactful but regardless, was cute!

I am not saying someone can't like this... I just don't. It's gross. The pictures are gross. The words are gross. The story is gross. But, if you are into gross you may like it. Not "evil" gross just yucky gross.

I personally picked out this book because as a picky person I thought it would be relatable and working with kids I know they can be picky too. I personally thought this was more of a fun read, it’s silly and can be engaging for students, at least it was for the children in my preschool classroom.

Lots of great visual irony. I love the illustrations and as the parent of a truly picky eater, this was just a fun one.

Very good read. My son is a picky eater and this helped him understand what it’s like to read about being a picky eater

The colors are striking, and has that gentle gross out factor some kids love. It's vibrant. I don't think I would actually love it if my little one picked up the catch phase though.

I enjoyed the illustrations. The storyline, not so much. Kind of gross thinking about it.

It was good I guess. I don't know how the book has anything to do with being picky. And I probably wouldn't want to read it again.

It's a perfect book for any picky eater. My pickiest eater laughed as the little picky raccoon showed foods they wouldn't eat and foods they would eat. This is a cute picture book for all ages.

4.0 - close to being really good. I felt it could use more of an overarching story and more text with the illustrations.
