Philippi is Paul's first destination outside Asia Minor, his first city to visit in Europe, and his first mission in a place where there was no Jewish community from which to begin preaching. Cynthia Campbell writes that in Paul's letter to the Philippians, we get a unique glimpse of our beginnings as Christians. Some themes explored include the importance of community for followers of Christ, Christian joy in spite of persecution, the nature of Christian unity, what it means to be "in Christ", and mutual hospitality.
I'm proud to say that the Reverend Cynthia Campbell was my pastor until her retirement from Highland Presbyterian Church in Louisville, Ky., until her retirement, although this was written while she was still president of the Presby seminary in Chicago.
Philippians is one my favorite books of the Bible, but reading this was absolutely eye-opening. Highly recommended.
This is a terrific study guide on the Book of Philippians and the core themes in Paul's letters that resonate throughout the scriptures. It has suggested Group Study aids and approaches in the back that make it a practical book for Church Adult Education programs as well that work well across various age groups from teens to elderly members. Particularly during this pandemic time, the themes of Philippians are relevant: In this Together, Great Joy, Beliefs that Matter, Being of One Mind, Christian Identity and Mutual Hospitality. This is the 3rd 'Six Themes' book I've utilized to enhance my understanding of the Bible and enable conversation & study and I've enjoyed them all equally! Am certain I'll be doing more!
