Healing Through Words is a guided tour on the journey back to the self, a cathartic and mindful exploration through writing. This carefully curated collection of exercises asks only that you be vulnerable and honest, both with yourself and the page. You don’t need to be a writer to take this walk; you just need to write – that’s all.
A breakout literary phenomenon and #1 New York Times Bestselling Author, Rupi Kaur wrote, illustrated, and self-published her first poetry collection, 'milk and honey' in 2014. Next came its artistic siblings 'the sun and her flowers' and ‘home body’, both debuting at #1 on bestseller lists across the world. These collections have sold more than 11 million copies and have been translated into over 43 languages. Most recently in 2022- she released her 4th book ‘Healing Through Words’ which is a journey of guided writing exercises to help the reader explore their creativity.
As she has done from the very beginning, Rupi self-produced ‘Rupi Kaur Live’, the first poetry special of its kind, which debuted on Amazon Prime Video in 2021.
Rupi Kaur graces stages across the globe on sold-out world tours. These shows are a poetic theatrical experience interlaced with her own touch of stand-up. Her work touches on love, loss, trauma, healing, femininity, and migration. She feels most at home when creating art, performing her poetry onstage, and spending time with family and friends.
“[Poetry] is long conversations by the ocean. Our lives are poetry. And the final act is writing it down.”
I fell in love with this book the minute I picked it up. First of all, it is beautiful. Second of all, I just love how Rupi writes. It’s so succinct, and hits the nail on the head every time. You can feel her every word through the page.
Next, this book takes her poetry, her experiences, opinions and passion and gives you a chance to start documenting your own experiences and feelings. This is then channeled into healing. What’s not to love?
She takes us beyond just reading her words. Now we have a chance to start being creative ourselves, and turning our experiences into words we might not otherwise be able to speak.
I just love this.. and know it is something I will really benefit from, because I loved reading her book milk and honey, but did feel like I had all these feelings after reading her poetry but had nowhere to put them. Thankfully now I do!
Where do I begin, this book takes Rupi Kaur’s passion to another level and it gives you a chance to write your own experiences and feelings. She did this in such a clever way that in doing these writing exercises you channel healing. 💕
What an experience this book created, it gave me a chance to say a lot of things I wouldn’t have said before. 💫 If you are looking for healing and creativity, this book is all you need 💖
Spoiler- I have not yet finished this book, but wanted to put my thoughts out there to hopefully inspire and help another reader/writer to explore this book.
I like journaling, but this book walks you through different parts of your life with prompts that make you truly dig deep. I was diagnosed 2 months ago with Bipolar 2 and honestly, I have been struggling. I had never been one to read poetry but bought this book in hopes it would provide some comfort.
There’s space (both physically and mentally) where you can go off in your own thoughts, but there is enough structure to keep you on track. This book has helped me immensely with dealing and exploring past traumas and emotions, and helps me feel grounded after I write.
I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to reconnect with themselves and feel all the emotions, the good, the bad and the ugly. Happy writing!
If you’re looking for a way to practice grounding or a present for your bookworm friend, then look no further. I received this as a gift for my birthday from a good friend. I’m very big into self improvement and mental health and the exercises in this book were very thoughtful. Gets you thinking about things or feelings you may have forgotten. As someone who suffers from anxiety, this was a great gift to receive.
Boi its not a book. I'm being kind with my 1 star, I don't wanna do homework in real life why would I want to sit down and relax and trauma dump with writing exercises
I've been writing poetry for about a month. I dived into this book as soon as I got it. I've done a couple exercises and they are probably my best writing. Her prompts and activities help me to to bring out emotion needed for good poetry. I cannot wait to continue to see how I'll develop as a writer. Even for experienced writers this book can be good to learn about Kaur's method/writing process and to try new writing techniques. Highly recommend this for any writers or want-to-be writers.
if you want to write like rupi kaur this is a good book but ONLY if you want to write like rupi kaur (ps: your experiences are not universal and your prompts are not as relatable as you try to make them)
This book is not what I expected. When I pick up a book by Kaur, I expect poetry that rips through my soul and while this included some poetry, this book is more of a book of journal prompts and self-help trauma healing. I got this book to review for my students, but ideally this book is meant to be written in. I think this would be a great addition for teens, but most would want to write in it, so it is better purchased individually as a journal.
What a gentle natural feeling this book gave me. It eases one into learning more about themself and brings them to feeling better about where they are. Most of the writing exercises are three step ones and made total sense once done. Great ideas on how to get started writing but also if just reading it-made you think the answers and was very worth the read.
a complete workshop. it reminded me of the shadow journal, just built for a poet or writer. this was absolutely beautiful with poems from “milk and honey” to help guide the way. i always enjoyed the way rupi put her all into this. the advice, honesty, and guidance from this was beautiful. it does take some getting used to., but i very much enjoyed it & would recommend.
What if you could heal your trauma and do it in a really artistic way? Reading my essays and poems months after, they seem so dynamic and true. It's a gift to have them articulated in this way, and something that I will revisit time and time again. Thank you for this exercise book and a peek into how you create poetry. I hope to finish the book this year.
This fill-in-the-blank journal is excellent for those trying to heal from trauma; I could see therapists recommending this to clients. This is currently not for me right now, though it would have been very valuable at other parts of my life. Nice work from Rupi.
