Green Beans

Everybody obeys what Gramma says. Even the flowers and vegetables she plants grow the way she says they should! Then one day she plants green beans that simply will not listen to her. The illustrations are lovely, and the character of the grandmother is interesting and well defined. I was disappointed that the little girl's role in getting the green beans to grow while the grandmother was on vacation was passive. (It was the rain that did it.)

Grandma is very good with her plants. Whatever she plants grows big and grows well. Until she plants some green beans.

Green beans are both the most overused and underused resource in America. How they are overused is obvious. Green bean casserole is quite possibly the worst recipe ever created in the new world. They are ubiquitous in every vegetable mix pack in the grocery store. No matter how many you eat, there are still hundreds left on your plate.

Their underutilization is less well-known. While corn prices soar because of new ethanol production to ease the energy crisis, many are left cob-less in their houses. Crying babes are heard throughout suburbia because of the lack of corn to garnish tacos or make corn chowder. How could there be such a lack of the most American food there is?

That's why we need to switch ethanol production from corn to green beans. They are clearly inedible and the supply is inexhaustible as seen by my plate despite how many I eat.

Green Beans, a book a young girl who has loves gardening. But her green beans refuse to grow. One day the grandmother has to leave and she lets he granddaughter take care of them. The book describes the techniques that the grand-daughter used to help the plant grow. This book would be used to inform students what plants needs to grow. Great for a lesson on plants!Grades 2-4

a prim and proper grandmother is teaching her granddaughter to grown green beans but they just won't grow. What will happen when grandma goes away for the week. Will the beans change and will the girl ever like them. Loved the family aspects and the ending. Length one on one or preschool.
