New York Times bestselling author Shelley Shepard Gray returns with the second novel in her “tantalizing” (Publishers Weekly) Rumors in Ross County series. In Ross County, love can stay the course, but first you have to know who to trust.
There’s a lot going on in Joy Howard’s life. She’s got an ex-husband who starts acting like he doesn’t want to be an ex anymore, a sixteen-year-old daughter in need of a guiding hand and a lot of rides to dance practice, more orders for paintings than she has time to paint, and a roster of tutoring clients who sometimes need far more than she can give.
What she doesn’t have is time for a new relationship.
Samuel “Bo” Beauman is a lot of things. He’s a counselor for transitioning ex-cons, a good friend to many, a construction worker, a brother and son, and even a part-time model for a high-end sportswear catalog. He’s also a man searching for redemption.
One thing he isn’t is a man in need of a girlfriend.
But none of that seems to matter when Bo hears Joy’s kind voice in a crowded coffee shop. He instantly knows she’s someone he wants to know better. The two of them hit it off—much to the dismay of practically everyone they know—but Bo doesn’t care what other people think. He feels at peace whenever he’s with Joy, and he won’t let her go without a fight.
When Joy starts getting mysterious texts and phone calls from unknown numbers, she tries to ignore it. But instead of going away, the messages escalate and Joy realizes she can’t handle it alone. But she is juggling a jealous ex-husband, a handful of students with little to lose, and a brand-new boyfriend who spent several years behind bars. Who can she trust?

This is book 2 in the Ross County series by Shelley Shepard Gray. Joy Shepard is the divorced mother of a 16 year old daughter (who loves dance) who meets Samuel “Bo” Beauman at a coffee shop. Bo is an ex-con who works with other ex-cons as they re-enter life after prison. They are two people you wouldn’t expect to meet and talk with each other. As nearly all the characters in Shelley Shepard Gray’s books, they are believable and work toward making a better life for themselves and those around them. I liked learning more about the characters as the story progressed, the development of their relationship with each other, and the outside factors at play. Joy spends her time tutoring adults who want to learn to read and drawing / painting. Joy also has an ex--husband with whom she tries to have a cordial relationship. There is also a stalker in the mix. Bo tries to lead and encourage recent ex-cons as they find their way after prison (some are challenging in their actions) as well support Joy recognizing the newness of their relationship. As in Shelly Shepard Gray’s other books, I really like the characters. The people are kind at heart and really try to do their best. Sometimes they make questionable decisions or don’t communicate all the information they could, but that adds to the story and development of the plot. In this book, the mystery/ suspense of a stalker adds to the storyline as the reader tries to discover who that person could be. There is also a budding friendship / romantic interest between Chloe (Joy’s 16 year old daughter) and Finn (a young Amish man who is considering leaving the Amish life). I also appreciated learning about adult illiteracy as Joy explains and tutors as part of the story. I liked this book better than the first, Edgewater Road, in the Rumors in Ross County series. I found the characters to be more even tempered in their approach to life. I enjoyed the book because of the character development, relationship development between the characters, and the mystery / suspense of the stalker identification as well as the stalker’s actions. This book was hard to put down. I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did, and that you read other Shelley Shepard Gray books; she is one of my very favorite authors. Thank you to the publisher for an advance copy of this book. The opinions expressed are my own.
I laughed, I cried, I held my breath, I cheered and celebrated. I absolutely fell in love with all of these characters all over again and made some new friends in book 2. I can't wait to hear what happens in book 3. I Highly Recommend Sycamore Circle and all Shelley Shepard Gray's book. Shelley has a way of pulling you in and making you part of the story and making the characters come a live.
Sycamore Circle ( The Rumors in Ross County Series ) #2 By Shelley Shepard Gray Wow, Shelley Shepard Gray has did it again. Sycamore Circle is installment two in the series, The Rumors in Ross County. Loved the story and the characters, both were well written and developed. This is Bo’s story. Bo is an ex con who helps inmates adjust outside of prison. I loved Bo. Joy is a single mother who loves to paint and help tutor people who cannot read. Someone is out to get Joy. Who would want to hurt her? Can Bo help her before it is to late? I started reading and could not put it down. I was not disappointed. I receive a complimentary copy of this book. All Opinions are my own.
Looking for romance, suspense, and mystery? Look no further than the Rumors of Ross County Series. Joy Howard is a strong independent single Mom. She juggles her 16 year old daughter's schedule, an ex-husband, a tutoring job, and painting. She has no plans to add a new boyfriend. Bo Beaumon has his hands full helping Lincoln to rehabilitate ex-cons, of which he is one. Knowing that his future would most likely not involve any woman, he is surprised when he is pulled by the sound of a beautiful voice in the coffee shop. Falling head over hills, Bo protects those he loves. When Joy starts to received stalking texts, Bo is determine to find who the culprit is before they can hurt Joy or her daughter. Will these two be able to put aside their differences and find love? Can they find trust despite their backgrounds? I loved the first book in the Rumors in Ross County Series. This second book took it to a whole other level. I love forward to the next. I received a copy from the author. A review was not required.
I have one word for you when it comes to Shelley Shepard Gray’s newest Rumors of Ross County book – Bo. This ex-con turned mentor grabbed my interest in Edgewater Road and he grabbed my heart in Sycamore Circle. Part Southern gentleman, part rough-around-the-edges former bad boy, he is completely swoonworthy. That accent (which Gray describes perfectly) … be still my heart. And there’s something about a guy like Bo saying endearments with that drawl that makes you all melty inside.
Joy is equally lovable, just in different ways lol. She’s got a kind heart (and a voice to match – which is what drew Bo to her in the first place) and believes the best about people, despite the struggles she’s faced with her ex-husband. I appreciated her passion for teaching adults to read, and I loved watching her with her teenage daughter Chloe, too. Bo’s gentle but persistent pursuit of Joy is especially sweet, and his kisses raise the heat quite nicely.
Along with the brewing romance between Bo & Joy, there are a few other subplots that add layers to the story and infuse a bit of suspense that keeps you on your readerly toes. One of those is a precious friendship-maybe-more for Joy’s daughter Chloe and an Amish young man which also serves as a sweet nod to Gray’s prolific Amish novels. I really loved reading about these two and would love to spend time with them in future books. I also thought the suspense thread of Joy receiving threatening messages was very well written and kept me guessing as to who was behind them. (I was wrong lol)
Bottom Line: Once again, Shelley Shepard Gray has created a heartwarming page-turner of a romance. Vividly drawn characters with compelling backstories and intriguing layers keep you firmly invested in the outcome, and you’ll be cheering for Bo & Joy to find a happily-ever-after despite the obstacles in their way. A dash of suspense infuses the plot with more than just the romantic kind of tension and sometimes makes it difficult to breathe for reasons beyond Bo’s swoonilicious kisses. Readers will be on guard as much as Joy, and you’ll find your heart in your throat as the suspense thread crescendos to a dramatic finish. Sycamore Circle is a must-read for fans of bad-boy-good-girl romance, Shelley Shepard Gray’s books, or just a good story with engaging characters.
(I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book)
Sycamore Circle is the second book in the Rumors in Ross County series. Shelley Shepard Gary is an author who is talented in writing multiple genres. I enjoyed reading Bo and Joy's story. They both do community service. She's helping people better themselves as she's serving as a literacy teacher. Bo is a counselor for transitioning ex-cons. He's big, brawny has tattoos and is an ex-con she's soft, sweet and kind to everyone. You wouldn't think there would be that connection there but there is. Both are learning to trust again and recovering from things in their past. Joy has an ex-husband, a daughter and a secret she's been keeping from Bo. Someone is stalking her and sending harassing messages to her. The story moves at a steady pace and escalates as we approach the end. This is not one of the author's Amish books but there are Amish characters and the culture added to the book which I enjoyed. A light faith message, we see no one can do it all but through him all things are possible. Positive and uplifting. I look forward to many more books by this author.
Pub Date 07 Feb 2023 I was given a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions expressed are my own.
The author gives us a great mystery with ex-cons, an ex-wife, ex-husband, and a teenager, all being important characters in this book. Love, forgiveness, redemption and mystery make this a very interesting book.
Bo, the ex-con who is working so hard for redemption from the world, works with other ex-cons to help them find their places back out in the world.
Joy, the ex-wife, who lives on Sycamore Circle is such a busy woman with her teenage daughter who always needs to go places, her volunteer work teaching people to read, painting pictures to sale and just life in general keeps her so busy that she does not have time for much else in her life. Her ex-husband suddenly decided that he is interested in her again, but she has no interest whatsoever in him.
Love at first sight? Bo sees and hears Joy talking to one of her clients across the room at a coffee shop and immediately is drawn to her.
Bo tries to become close to Joy, but she is hesitant, especially when she finds out his background. When Joy starts getting mysterious texts and phone calls, Bo wants to protect her.
You will not want to miss how all of this ends. I highly recommend this book to lovers of clean mysteries. Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for a copy of this book. The opinions expressed are my own.
I was hooked from the beginning. Great story line with wonderful characters. Loved the blend of romance, drama, suspense, and mystery. Had me engaged from beginning to end. The twists were unexpected and kept you wanting to read just a few more pages. Always wonderful stories from Shelley Shepard Gray. Highly recommend.
This story has everything a reader who loves intrigue and a bit of romance look for. The characters jump off the pages with realism and I became so glued to the book I didn’t put it down until I finished it. Joy is a great character who has a big heart. She loves to help others who don’t know how to read. I love how the author highlights illiteracy and how many people deal with this daily. I am happy that we have volunteers like Joy who give their time to help others. She does have a group of people she teaches to read who she feels needs that extra touch to show that they are important.
Bo is by far my favorite character in this book. With his background I can see why he is a little uncomfortable putting himself out there. Something about Joy catches Bo’s attention while at a coffee shop. You can feel his shyness as he approaches Joy and I thought it was cute to see this big strong intimidating man feel so shy around Joy. The author gives us history on Bo’s past which helps readers see that people can change and be a better person.
The story is filled with emotions that are raw that shows how important it is to open up to someone when you are in trouble. When Joy finds herself being stalked she starts to become anxious and withdraws a little from Bo. With an ex-husband to deal with she is not sure she can share her feelings and let Bo in. Can she trust him?
The author is very good at unraveling a mystery with gripping suspense. I wasn’t sure who was behind it but I never suspected the person that was revealed. When Joy’s daughter realizes that her mom could be in trouble she turns to her Amish friend Finn. His calm spirit helps them decide to call Bo. With an action packed ending, readers won’t have a chance to rest as tragedy is very near. Get ready for an intense story that puts this author on the front burner for one of the best books for 2023.
I received a copy of this book from the author. The review is my own opinion.
Wow! This book blew me away! I have not read the first book in the series but I definitely will now! The characters were fabulous and the story line was incredible! Joy is a strong, independent single mother who enjoys tutoring and painting. Bo is an ex con who is dedicated to helping convicts adjust to life on the outside. I like how open Joy and Bo are and that they take their relationship slow. Bo certainly won me over with his protective and caring characteristics. The other characters are interesting with their own great stories. I like the suspense aspect- the ending was a total surprise! A definite must read!
Wow! I don't even know where to begin. Sycamore Circle is just another example of author Shelley Shepard Gray's amazing writing. She has once again blown me away with another fantastic story.
Joy and Bo's story captivated my heart, and I especially loved hearing tough guy Bo using terms of endearment. (sigh) Joy and Bo each have a caring heart, but their background stories are so different. Those differences, their feelings and their uncertainties about a relationship made their story so endearing and kept me guessing just how their relationship would evolve.
The romance was just one of the things that made this such a great story. Entwined with the romance is intrigue, mystery, suspense, a light message of faith and some really great secondary characters. No element overpowers another making this a perfect combination that kept me glued to the pages.
Sycamore Circle is a truly amazing story and a great addition to the Rumors in Ross County Series. Even though it is part of a series, it contains plenty of background information from book one, Edgewater Road, that it can be read as a stand alone. It is a great read and one that I highly recommend.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with a complimentary copy of this book. All comments and opinions are strictly my own.
A modern day damsel in distress; this plot will keep you on your toes guessing! Who is the mystery stalker and what are his connections and motives? The main characters, Joy and Bo are in a budding relationship learning to trust again and lean on people. They are both independent, strong individuals who have some baggage. Both are doing valiant community service work and find themselves in a tangled mess. I enjoyed the unique plot, and the way that the author kept the story moving. I never found the story dull or slow. There is a bit of Amish culture woven into the scenes as well.
This book is acceptable for teenage readers, even with the slightly romantic moments. I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for my review.
Sycamore Circle is a must read!! Based on romance and suspense. This story is about a women name Joy and an ex-con named Bo. I couldn’t put the book down once I started reading. So well written to keep the reader wanting more. This books was just simply wonderful from beginning to end. I highly recommend you read this book. Shelley Shepard Gray is one of my favorite authors. She never disappoints!
Wow! I haven't read the first book in this series but I will definitely be reading it now! The characters were fantastic and the story line was unique! Joy is a strong, independent single mother who paints and tutors. Bo is an ex con who helps inmates adjust to life outside of prison. I liked how Joy and Bo took their relationship slow and genuinely took the time to get to know each other. The other characters were great and they each had interesting stories going on with them. The suspense aspect took me by complete surprise! The ending was unexpected! A definite must read!
Sycamore Circle was a book that was hard to set down! It is book two in the Rumors in Ross County series, but can easily be picked up and enjoyed on its own, without having read book one, Edgewater Road. Since I had read book one, I already knew Bo and some of the other men who helped ex-cons adjust to life after prison. They were also ex-cons themselves, including Bo. It was very clear that Bo had changed his life years earlier and that he was a good and honorable man. He had a worldly roughness about him, yet also a caring and protective side. He went above and beyond to help his friends, family, and those he cared about.
I really liked the way the relationship developed between Bo and Joy. They were both such nice characters and it was fun to see such a kind and caring many fall for Joy after she had spent the last four years knowing that her husband had cheated on her and left her for another woman. Now a kind, handsome, younger man was showing interest in her and treating her daughter with respect and thoughtfulness, as well. It was sweet.
There was a thread of suspense in the story relating to texts and letters that Joy was receiving from what appeared to be a potential stalker. The author did a great job of keeping me guessing at who it could be. There was also a nice side story involving a romance that grew gently between Joy’s teenage daughter, Chloe, and an Amish boy, Finn.
I am really enjoying this series and look forward to reading more books from it in the future.
(4.5 stars)
I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
Sycamore Circle is a very well written romance. Ms. Gray has written another winner. I always know when I pick up a book by this author that I am going to enjoy my read. I highly recommend this book.
This book was so interesting! It mixed the Amish genre with a very contemporary theme. This is a continuation of the storyline of Lincoln's work of rehabilitating ex-cons to be able to handle life on the outside. It had romance, danger, mystery and suspense and wonderful characters that you can't help but love. I have to admit, I found myself wondering how I would react to find myself as the interest of a man who had been incarcerated. How would I deal with the trust issue, etc.! Joy is a very conscientious divorcee and a mother of a teenage whose life is full of events, dance lessons, and her work as a tutor for those who can't read. As these two meet their story begins. Joy receives threatening texts and life becomes very insecure for her and her daughter and it appears there is someone with evil intentions. This book is very good and I really enjoyed it and didn't know who the culprit was until it was revealed. It was great! Definitely want more of this series!
I received a complimentary copy of this book. All thoughts are my own.
It seems like forever since we first met Lincoln and his group of ex-cons. This is Bo's story. He meets Joy at a coffee shop where she is tutoring someone in reading. Just hearing her voice draws him in. Their relationship is so sweet because of both of their insecurities, his with his past and hers with being divorced. Someone has targeted Joy and Bo wants nothing more than to help her find out who is after her and to protect her.
Just like in Edgewater Road, the guys are there for each other. If one of them needs something all they have to do is ask. Bo's friends are there for him when he really needs them. This is a romance story but it's also a story of forgiveness, overcoming your past, friendships that can't be broken, brotherhood, mystery, suspense, and a story of faith. I'll be anxiously awaiting the next book in the series.
Second in the Ross County series, Sycamore Circle is a winner! I think I like it even better than the first one, and that was a great story too! Romance is not necessarily my favorite genre, and thankfully in this series though the romance is alive and well, there is so much more going on!!! This has the perfect blend of suspense and action, complex characters and a great turn of events in the plot that kept me turning pages as quickly as I could. I literally read this book in two days, and that was only to pace myself!! I was fortunate enough to get an advance copy with no promise of a review, and this opinion is my own.
I know the author is a wonderful Amish fiction writer, but boy howdy, she can sure write a mystery romance as well. I really enjoyed the story line and the characters. The hero is Bo, and I fell for his brawny bad boy persona. He is tender hearted and loving under all those tattoos and scowls. He is a fierce protector to those he loves. The heroine, is Joy and she is a beautiful person who takes care of her daughter but also teaches adults how to read. Joy has a stalker and the reader is poised to find out who it is. Honestly, I had a few suspicions, but didn't guess who the bad guy was. I thoroughly enjoyed it and I certainly hope there will be more books in the series. *I was given a copy of the book by the publisher and this is my honest opinion.
Shelley Shepard Gray always writes characters that feel very real and honest. She doesn't write about billionaires or super soldiers - she writes about single mom's and men who are trying to change their lives. And this book is no exception. It will definitely resonate with you and give you a lot of things to think about.
Bo is an ex-con who truly has changed course since his time in prison. He was never a bad person or a career criminal. He's a good man who ended up in a bad situation. Since he's been out of prison he's been working to help others find a new path in life after they've served their time. Meeting Joy is something of a revelation to him. He truly feels unlovable - so to find someone he's interested in and wants to connect with on a deeper level is pretty amazing. Joy is a very sweet person - who truly is one of those angel people out there. She's a single mom who is really struggling - but trying to do the best for her daughter and still make a difference in her community. Meeting Bo challenges her to open her heart and mind - to find love and comfort after a tough divorce.
I loved the storyline for the book and the characters - but there was just something missing for me. I think the connection between Bo and Joy was undeniable - but I wanted to see more time between them on the pages. We spend a lot of time watching the characters do other things - with other parts of their lives - but not enough together. There were also a fair few unresolved threads to the story - like Bo's modeling and relationship with his family and Joy's family too. But overall - I enjoyed this a lot and I hope Shelley Shepard Gray writes a few more books in this world!
If you are reading this book - and want a song to go with it - I'd recommend Wreckage by Nate Smith. It captures the vibe of this book so perfectly. This book does have some Christian themes - but as Christian romance goes it is not very heavy on that side. So as someone who doesn't usually read that genre - it still works for me.
I received this book as an ARC via NetGallley, but these opinions are all my own.
Bo starts to fall for Joy when he overhears her soothing voice at the coffee shop. Jo is as sweet as her voice. Bo has made mistakes in the past and paid for them. Now he is a sweet and caring man. I received a free copy of this ebook from the publisher through Netgalley. This is my honest and voluntarily given review. This book contains a mystery, suspense, a sweet romance, family dynamics, wonderful characters, and a great story. Even though this book can be enjoyed as a standalone, I love this series and highly recommend it. Both of these characters get a terrific chance at a new life and a new love. I love this heartwarming book.
I love romances with flawed characters. No one is perfect so I don't want to read about perfect people falling in love. Gray has a gift she can write any genre and do it with so much class. I am never disappointed when I read a book by Gray. This is book two in the Rumors in Ross County series, but it can be read as a standalone. I will say this book one was just as good. I recommend this 4-star read. The Mary Reader received this book from the publisher for review. A favorable review was not required, and all views expressed are our own.
This is the second book in the series. It was good but very similar to book one. The flow was pretty smooth, with enough angst thrown in to keep the romance interesting.
I enjoy the tale of Bo and Joy. I value that it’s a faith based love story of second chances. No smut included for it wasn’t needed. The friendships of the men in TDoT are fantastic. I love seeing loyalty in action.
Another great story by Shelley Shepard Gray! This is the second book in The Rumors in Ross County Series. You don’t need to read them in order, but you will want to! Bo is an ex con who helps reform other ex cons. He befriends Joy, a single mother with a daughter. Joy starts getting mysterious texts and they work together trying to figure it out. There’s also a secondary story with Joy’s daughter Chloe and a young Amish man, Finn. If you like a slow burn, this is for you! I’m looking forward to the next book in the series. Many thanks to the author, Blackstone Publishing and NetGalley for a complimentary copy of the book. The opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.

Great book! I loved Bo and Joy’s story. The characters were well developed and the mystery kept me turning the page. I really liked the inclusion of the Amish characters and learning about some of their story also. I’m looking forward to the possibility of reading the stories of the other people and the T DOT.
Such an engaging book that follows Edgewater Road-suspenseful with messages of faith that kept my attention from page 1. I enjoyed trying to figure out what was going to happen next. You definitely need to read this book.
