The main challenges the European Single Market is facing in the 21st century result from the enlargement to Central and Eastern Europe, the EMU, and the globalization of trade and investment that has aided the rise of competitive emerging markets. About the author

De famílias madeirenses, Helena Marques nasceu em Carcavelos, em 1935. Jornalista durante trinta e seis anos, iniciou a sua carreira no Diário de Notícias do Funchal e terminou-a no Diário de Notícias de Lisboa, onde foi directora-adjunta (1968- 1992). Entretanto, foi redactora de vários outros diários, nomeadamente A Capital, República e A Luta.
Publicou o seu primeiro livro, O Último Cais, em 1992. Muito aclamado, recebeu o Grande Prémio de Romance e Novela da Associação Portuguesa de Escritores, o Prémio Revista Ler/Círculo de Leitores, o Prémio Máxima de Revelação, o Prémio Procópio de Literatura e o Prémio Bordallo de Literatura da Casa da Imprensa. Seguiram-se os romances A Deusa Sentada (1994), Terceiras Pessoas (1998) e Os Íbis Vermelhos da Guiana (2002), e o livro de contos Ilhas Contadas (2007). A sua obra encontra-se traduzida em alemão, italiano, castelhano, grego, romeno e búlgaro.
O Bazar Alemão (2010) foi o seu último livro.
